Annual Regatta Puts Best to the TestThe wind was slow to oblige, but by noon things started to pick up for the 2007 LYC Club

Championship Regatta held Saturday, October 6th. Each year the best skippers from each fleet compete forthe honored title. This year all skippers and crew sailed Daysailers, a 17 foot, shallow draft boat designed forcasual family sailing. Some of the boats where rigged for racing, but most were not. The Daysailer proved achallenge nonetheless. Thanks to everyone who helped organize, prep and rig the boats for the event. Aspecial thanks is in order to race committee members Gretchen Heinke, Tom Clarke, John Rupert, Shari

Smith and Kevin Flanagan. Thanks also to the Daysailer owners for loaning their boats for the round robinevent. Tami Chapman, a former member who recently rejoined with her two sons, even let us borrow hernew boat...Now theres confidence!

Thanks to LYC Daysailer Fleet 98 for lending their boats for use during the 2007 Club Championship Regatta.

Boat owners include: Rosalie Kinney, Scott Graham, Ken Meeks, Dan Mejak, JP Clowes,

Thistles Take First at Chili-CookoffThis years Chili Cook-off

was one of the best to date!

    Organizers Jan Savage and Kathy

Muenz did a superb job. The

event was very festive with all

    the OSU decorations, TV

    projection screen and OSU door

    prizes There were 7 different

    chili's competing -- one from

    each fleet. Chili's ranged from

mild to hot, from soupy to thick

and from sweet to tangy. One had

beer in it; another cinnamon. Allwere excellent and a credit to

their fleets. At first, folks sat

down at tables to eat their chili,

but soon we all just stood by the

    counter, eating standing up, so

we could just step forward to

sample the next chili. Then at

last, we all sat down for the

    various sides of breads, salads,

    and desserts, while we watched

the OSU game on the projection

    screen. OSU door prizes where

    given out during the game.

It was hard to choose our

favorite chili, but with only one

    buckeye to vote with, decisions

had to be made. And so, at half-

time, the winners wereannounced. First Place: Thistles

Come spring expect to see some new young faces

at the club. LYC is the official host site of a new Sea

    Scouts group, Ship 280.

Sea Scouts is a division of the Boy Scouts ofAmericas co-educational Venturing program. As a

scouting organization, Sea Scouts is designed to

promote citizenship and to improve members' boating

skills and knowledge through instruction and practice

in water safety, boating skills, outdoor, social, and

service experiences, and knowledge of our maritime

    heritage.

A number of LYC members have stepped up to

    provide leadership for the Ship.

    These include Kevin Tschantz,

who will serve as Skipper;Christie Whitt, is the Chartered

    Organization Rep. JP Clowes is

    Committee Chair and Dan

    Mejak will assist as Mate.

    To date, seven youths have

    signed on, but more are

    expected. St. Charles, CSG and

    Wellington, all schools where

interest in the Sea Scouts has

    been expressed, will post fliers.

In addition, the Boy Scouts are

promoting the opportunity to all of their troops.

As a host, LYC provides a place for the Ship to

meet as well as boats to use. LYC will also provide

free sailing instruction, until the Scouts have their

own program in place. The club will also provide use

of the FJ's until the ship has its own fleet.

Incidentally, the clubs Venture is a Sea Scout

approved boat. Sea Scouts are not allowed to own any

property, so LYC will own any boats the Sea Scouts

acquire. In return, the Sea Scouts will complete an

annual service project for Leatherlips. (Sounds

GREAT!)Sea Scouts can earn ranks: the highest being the

Quartermaster, which is equivalent to the BSA Eagle

Scout. One interested youth would like to attend the

Naval Academy, so he is very eager to earn his

Quartermaster. First, we are requiring that they all get

    their Ohio Boater's permit.

Also, our Ship is eligible to send a 2-person team

to compete in the William I. Koch Cup, an event that

spans two years. The first year, the Sea Scouts

compete nationally. If they place, then the next yearthey go on to the international competition. Mr. Koch

provides new boats each year for the Cup. At the

international event, Mr. Koch provides a banquet at

his home for all the participants. Its quite an honor.

LYCs own Zach Whitt and Kevin Schantz took 2nd

nationally three times, and then 7th twice and 9th

once in the international event. They sailed in the Cup

a total of 6 yrs. They were in a ship in another district

and were the only two who could sail, so they were

sent. No one expected them to

    actually place! Now BSA

would like to have a ship inthis district -- a ship that

    focuses more on sailing. (The

    other ships focus on U.S.

    Marine Corp.) It would be

great if LYC Sea Scouts could

    place!

    Article submitted by AJ Savage

For the second time, I served on the

Race Committee for the LYCWomens Championship, and I

must say how impressed I am by

the ladies of our club. In addition

to the racing, there is a great sense

    of camaraderie among the

competitors. Off the water there is

a lot of fun and laughter. On the

    water, I witnessed some good

    sportsmanship and some serious

    competitive streaks.

This year we saw four boats

compete: three Lidos and a Laser. This made for

enjoyable racing as the Laser competed against

    the Lidos via

    Portsmouth

    Handicap, but

    within the

    Lidos it was

    true head to

    head

    competition.

    Janet Rupert

    showed her

    starting prowess

by crossing the line first each race, allowing her

laser to clear the fleet and never look back. With

clear air and boat speed, Janet sped across the

finish with three bullets. But dont think that the

Lidos just gave it to her. Watching from the

committee boat, we were able to

time the boats at the mark

roundings and estimate the lead by

    corrected time. Last years champ

    Jackie Herkowicz often closed the

gap on Janet going down wind, but

she had a battle of her own with the

    other Lidos as well. Rosalie

    Kinney and Kathy Muenz

    frequently took the lead Lido

position, and it was often difficult

to guess who would cross the finish

in second until the last moments of

the race. As the Lidos battled eachother back to weather, Janet would

    turn up and extend

    her lead.

    In the end, the

    handicap rating

    couldnt make up

    the time

    difference for the

    Lidos to catch the

    Laser, and Janet

    was able to

cleanly sweep the top spot while the Lidos fought

it out for the second place spot. Great weather

and competition made for another enjoyable

    Womens Championship at LYC.

Learning to Sail a J24 in 25 Knots of Windby Janet Rupert

As many of you know, John and I spent the

summer in California. One thing we did was take

sailing lessons to pass US Sailings Basic

Cruising at OCSC Sailing, located at Berkeley

    Marina. Heres my journal.

    DAY ONE

We were handed the keys to a J24 and went

out to rig it. When we were about done, we met

Chuck, our sailing instructor. Chuck is a great

guy, ex-Navy, cool headed, fun. Chuck warned us

that only about 50% of the people who take the

course pass the test on the first try. We terrified

himnot because of our sailing. He was leery

because we were new to the school and we were

married. Every step of the way the office had

asked us if we wanted to sail together. We did.

Turns out they didnt want us to sail together

because so often married couples bicker, yell, or

the men do things for their wives and the women

cant learn. After 34 years of marriage, John and I

have reached dtente. We had a calm day.

We also had another crew member, Brendan,

who is an administrator in an emergency room

and a certified adrenalin junky. We worked with

skipper and one crew, with the extra crew

standing in the cabin and observing and

occasionally lending a hand. The instructorstayed in the back pulpit to the side.

I was terrified. We were sailing in the Slot,

which is the wind tunnel created by the Golden

Gatethe only opening in 300 miles of coastline.

When its hot in the Central Valley, which it has

been this week, then it really sucks air through

the Slot. This morning there were white caps and

the wind grew to 15 to 20 knotstypical daily

    for this time of year.

Besides review, today we began advanced

sail trim, and we did lots of man overboard drills.

The sail trim included the fishermans reef,

which is tight outhaul, Cunningham, then tight

backstay to bend the mast back to flatten the sail,

loose vang and traveler moved leeward to create

twist in the upper sail to spill wind. I noticed that

    LEATHERLIPS.COM NOVEMBER 2007

    PAGE 7

  • 8/14/2019 LYC Mainsheet110807

    8/10

the backstay acts like a Laser vang, which

depowers by bending the mast and flattening the

    sail.

In the man overboard drills, the instructor

throws an orange milk carton overboard, the

skipper goes to a beam reach, tacks back to a

broad reach, heads up at just the right moment

and at the right angle to spill speed and picks up

the man. Sounds easy, right? Well, the wind is

honking and it took each of us two or three tries.

At the end of the day, Chuck praised us for

not arguing. John said we could bicker for him,

but we charged a per hour fee. All in all, it went

well. Scared each time I tried something new,

    then got over it.

We came home and had to take care of the

dog. She had been cooped up for 8 hours, so we

took her to a dog park. SF dog parks are pretty

fancy deals. The dog closed her day with a walk

off leash right on San Francisco Bay. We also had

laundry to do, as we only brought a few clothes.

Day Two will be published in the next issue.
