New Map Resources Are in the Works For several years theLibrary has hostedspecific mapcollections online, suchas the Alan M.Voorhees MapCollection and the CivilWar Maps Project. Thisyear we are working ona general MapCollection page for

2017 Geographic Names ConferenceComes to the Library The Council of Geographic Names Authorities' 2017Geographic Names Conference, entitled "The OldDominion and Beyond: Four Hundred Years of Settlementand Naming," will take place May 8-12, 2017, at the Libraryof Virginia in Richmond. This is the only conference that brings together the StateGeographic Names Authorities (SNAs) and the U.S. Boardon Geographic Names (BGN), providing participants aunique opportunity to share information and knowledgeabout the geographic naming process and research. Thereis no better way to network and benefit from the expertiseof the members and staffs of the BGN, SNAs, tribalauthorities, other state and federal mapping agencies, andmembers of the geospatial and academic communities.

(Luke Vavra, shown in middle) Vavra, formerly of Cartographic Arts, Inc., served as thesociety's first chairman and helped oversee itsdevelopment and the quality map programming held at theLibrary such as the Alan M. and Nathalie P. VoorheesLecture Series on the History of Cartography. He alsorecommended map purchases to include in the Library'smap collection. 

(William Wooldridge, shown far left)  Wooldridge, a longtime supporter of the Library, has usedour resources and helped to acquire and donate uniquematerials that fit perfectly into the Library's collections. In2013, on his recommendation, the Fry-Jefferson MapSociety was able to raise the funds to acquire a rareConfederate pattern map drafted by C. W. Oltmann, whoworked under Jedidiah Hotchkiss. "Luke and Bill have long been very active members of theFry-Jefferson Map Society supporting the map collection atthe Library of Virginia," said map expert Marianne M.McKee. "I had the pleasure of working with both of them onspecial projects. Their work has encouraged the interestsand participation of others, and they deserve our heartfelt

and participation of others, and they deserve our heartfeltthanks." In honor of their unquie contributions to the Library ofVirginia's map collection, the Fry-Jefferson map Societywill acquire maps of Virginia that represent their interests inthe history of cartography.  

 

Recent Map Events at the Library  

 On Saturday, November 5, 2016, Eliane Dotson, vicepresident of the Washington Map Society and the owner ofOld World Auctions, led a workshop entitled, "What's MyMap Worth? How to Value Antique Maps." Approximately20 people attended this fascinating session that includedinformation on the best websites to visit for current andhistorical map prices. Attendees also learned thedifference between insurance appraisals, dealer prices,and auction estimates. Participants traveled from as faraway as Staunton and Alexandria for this workshop at theLibrary.
