TO LUTHER

To Luther let us sing A joyous song of love and cheer,

May our voices loudly ring In praise of Alma Mater dear.

Thy mem’ry dear we’ll cherish

And ever recollect thy care. That thy fame may never perish

Is the burden of our prayer.

Our hearts are light and free Whene’er we to Old Luther sing;

May she now and ever be Faithful to our Heavenly King!

Chorus

May our thoughts to thee oft turn

When we’re absent far away May we then sincerely yearn To return to thee some day.

Tune: “There’s Music in the Air”

“PRI SEC”

Pri-sec-ter-qua Hoopla! Boomla! We yell Luther

Zip! Bang! Rah! Rah!

FIELD SONG

Our team goes in to fight and win, The spirit of old drives them on.

With a “Pri Sec” shout We all come out

To yell for Luther who wins today. And Luther’s team is strong;

They fight as long As victory hangs in doubt,

Opponents fall ‘Fore Luther’s wall,

All hail to our College dear!

Playing two sports meant a lot of time was spent with some very special and life-long friends. Naming only a few would be Larry Staffon, Tom Lawrence, Roger Wiebe, Tim Kiemel, David Kundert, Chuck Himsel, and Darrel Highum. Memorable Professor(s) or Staff Person(s): Pip Qualley, Kent Finanger, and Hamlet Peterson. It was Coach Finanger and Coach Pete who gave me a chance to play when I didn’t think that was possible. Both coaches taught me a lot and were just the greatest. Pip Qualley was a great teacher and person. I remember that because I missed a lot of classes (T,W, S) playing baseball. He called me into his office numerous times to try to teach me Greek. He cared about students and would take time for them. He was one-of-a-kind, a top-notch, quality person.

Most valuable skill or ability acquired at Luther: I was able to meet a number of life-long friends and had the time of my life. The quality and mind set of the student body was perfect for me. I was able to develop a personality and learned a lot about life. I was also able to continue and develop my Christian faith. I loved Luther College. Comments: I went to Luther Seminary in St. Paul for 1 ½ years. That half year was spent at a church in Beloit, WI, where I met a great man, Rev. Paul Vogen. After a lot of interesting discussions, he helped me decide that my love was working with young people, which led me to UW Eau Claire to become a teacher. I loved teaching and coaching for 32 years, and I honestly feel my best and most enjoyable years were the last five that I taught.

Name: Susan (Maclay) Blackman Spouse Name: Paul H. Blackman Address: 1514 North Herndon Street, Arlington, VA 22201 Phone: (703) 525-6862 Email: [email protected] College Major: Modern Foreign Languages Advanced Degree: M.A.; Ph.D./Foreign Affairs Occupation/Profession/Career Path: After Luther, I went to graduate school in Foreign Affairs at the University of Virginia, which included a five-month stint in India working on my dissertation. For the next thirty years, I worked in the International Trade Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the mission of which was to find ways to help U.S. companies do more business abroad. During that time, I had the good fortune to work on many geographic areas, including South Asia; East Asia; Africa; the Middle East; and Eastern Europe. Retirement Date: July 1998 Places lived since graduation: Charlottesville, VA; Washington, D.C.; Arlington, VA Favorite College Memory: My favorite memory of Luther is of the incomparable music – the excitement of those who were chosen to be Messiah soloists, the wonderful concerts by choirs, band, brass choir, and many others. Since I played in the orchestra for Messiah, I would sneak into Weston Noble’s chorus rehearsals in Valders auditorium and enjoy singing with the group. Never again has such great music been so continuously accessible. Memorable Professor(s) or Staff Person(s): Sharon (Mueller) Loewald. Sharon was a wonderful French teacher, and we’ve kept in touch for many years. After she left Luther, she married an international development expert, Richard Loewald. When he got a job with UNESCO, she moved with him to Paris, where I visited them on one of my Commerce Department trips. Sharon’s husband died relatively young, but she has continued to live in Paris. I last saw her when she came to a concert our church choir gave there. Most valuable skill or ability acquired at Luther: The most valuable skill I acquired at Luther was that I learned to work with, and value contributions of, people from every part of the globe. From friends, Malda Mecks (Argentina) and Tom Tlou (Botswana), to senior-year roommate, Vicky Lyimo (Tanzania), each of the twelve foreign students then on campus (a number far exceeded today) brought their special and unique perspectives to life at Luther. In the years to follow, I would encounter many people of diverse nationalities, but none were friends so dear as those from my college days.

Retirement Date: January 31, 2002 Number of Children: 2 & 2 stepchildren Number of Grandchildren: 2 & 2 stepgrandchildren Places lived since graduation: Beecher, IL; Louisville, KY; Lawton, OK; Tacoma, WA; Phan Rang, Vietnam; Tuy Hoa, Vietnam; Park Forest, IL; Crete, IL; Beecher, IL; Boynton Beach, FL Favorite College Memory: Transferring to Southern Illinois University. Memorable Professor(s) or Staff Person(s): Warren Berg. He taught me to not EVER trust liberals. They talk a big game, but never do any of the work or give any of the money. They only want the conservative to fight the wars, pay the taxes and then – they take the tax money and give it to the poor. ALL, while taking the credit for everything! Most valuable skill or ability acquired at Luther: Work hard and avoid all liberals. Comments: I survived three robberies at gun point, a tropical storm on a troop ship in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, an earthquake in Seattle, a Category 3 hurricane (Wilma), and at least five mortar attacks and random gunfire in Vietnam. I am a former member of MENSA. Finally, on January 23, 2006 I made the only hole-in-one of my golf career and that night Joan agreed to marry me. Easily the best day of my life.

Memorable Professor(s) or Staff Person(s): Philip Reitan – a favorite top-notch Biology Department Advisor/Instructor; David Johnson – all of David Johnson’s classes were interesting and thought-provoking; Weston Noble – taught vocal technique and how to find emotion and depth of meaning in the music we studied; Helen Bodensteiner – provided valuable stage experience in quality play productions; Orville Running – used dry Norwegian wit to make all things about art forms and art history interesting. Most valuable skill or ability acquired at Luther: At Luther we were able to participate in a variety of activities outside of our major field of study, allowing a biology major to sing in the choirs and act in the plays (among other extra-curricular activities). Ours was a true liberal arts education, providing us with exposure and experience in several different disciplines – from science to music, art, drama, sports, foreign language, religion, education, etc. – resulting in both specialized and general skills for life-long pursuits. Comments: The friendships we made during our time at Luther are some of the most long-lasting and meaningful friendships we have. Our shared experiences on the Luther campus, and the times we have been together since graduation, have helped us to maintain these treasured friendships for over 50 years. Many members of our family have also attended Luther; and therefore, several generations of Luther alumni have become extended “family” to us.

Retirement Date: November 1980 Number of Children: 2 Places lived since graduation: Neenah; Wauwatosa; West Allis; Greendale; and Brookfield, WI Favorite College Memory: So many! Two are related to singing in Messiah. After our first performance freshman year, I had such chills from the thrill of the Amen chorus that I didn’t want to leave, but just sit there and soak up the moment some more. One of the performances we did at Decorah High School had a very special moment. Right after Weston Noble cut off the ending of the Amen, and before the applause began, the bells at Decorah Lutheran chimed ten o’clock. It was such a beautiful sound, and the moment only occurred once in the nine performances we did at the high school. Memorable Professor(s) or Staff Person(s): Dr. Robert Jenson and Abner Jonas for being wonderful teachers and advancing the stereotype of a unique professor. Earl Leland and Henry Weisser who made history come alive. Dr. John Bale, my favorite English prof, and I had a special moment when we could talk about a mutual former student that I taught in fifth grade and he taught at Luther. And Dr. Helen Strand, of course. Most valuable skill or ability acquired at Luther: I was an only child, so learning how to share a room with another person was essential. Also, I had never met and talked with African Americans or people from other countries before college, and I was very grateful for the opportunity and developed good friendships with many. Comments: Not a favorite, but certainly vivid memory was the night C.K. Preus Gymnasium burned – the shock and the cold because we had to evacutate Brandt. Some of us gathered in Koren, which was the library then, and were standing in the dark. Someone started singing, Built on a Rock the Church Shall Stand, and many joined in – special moment in a night of sadness and confusion.

(1964-93); Accounts Payable Auditor for Howard Schultz, Inc. (1994-97); Seasonal Tax Return Specialist for H & R Block (1999-2003) Retirement Date: December 1993 Current Work (if any): Many volunteering efforts at church and visitation ministry; our current local residential community/association; and some Hospice visits. Number of Children: 3 – Kimberly, Leanne, and Marsha Number of Grandchildren: 2 – Zachary (17) and Nathan (13) Places lived since graduation: Elgin, IL; Downers Grove, IL; Bella Vista, AR; Shorewood, IL Favorite College Memory: An embarrassing memory was, as a green freshman, when expressing a greeting to an upper-class athlete in the gymnasium basement café (fall of 1960) and then accidentally dumping my full tray of cokes and stuff on him. He and I did remain friends forever and laugh about it many times later, but I was assigned some “chores.” The special memories of “chapel stunts” done during required chapel time in the old gymnasium. And the “burning of the gymnasium” was quite a sight and experience to witness…sad, but it started quite a bit of new building efforts that continue to be enhancements for Luther. Our white “Mudda” vehicle was special in the events that it was driven to and very visible and useful to the members of our group during those years. I can’t say that any one of the four years of memories is a favorite, but all are a source of laughter and conversation when recalled in a group gathering. Memorable Professor(s) or Staff Person(s): Herbert Rebasso, Mathematics Professor. The “very tense and probable embarrassment” of his classroom chalkboard problem solving times in his Calculus class was so very unnerving for me that I continue to be three hours short of getting a math minor by not taking the second semester of Calculus, and I had to switch to a different minor. He was an excellent professor, and I have no doubt that I was learning well, but it was harder for me than any “one-on-one” sports event that I participated in. The lesson learned has been always to never “give up” on anything, but to find another alternative way and gain new perspectives. Most valuable skill or ability acquired at Luther: As immeasurable as some experiences are, the time at Luther has served as an important and crucial building block of being a part of an active and trusting (wholesome and Midwestern) community of Christian and family values. The ability to be involved in a wonderful variety of class subjects and activities has helped formulate many interests, while allowing the pursuit

of some very special gifted skills by those students. This “liberal arts” concept has been firmly endorsed in my family and continues to give a basis for “can do” tasks and open involvement in any environment setting (work; church; community). Also, just to be a part of a legacy school and its traditions is such a blessing that gratitude is an immerse emotion to me for the privilege that has been made possible by so many people before us, and now on to us and to our families.

Earl Leland…made you think and made history so interesting. Maurice Monhardt…he made you learn the rules of composition, then taught you how to break them. I found that fascinating. Most valuable skill or ability acquired at Luther: Self-assurance…at least more than I had. I loved band tours: the labor of loading buses and set-up/tear-down, standing in the front well of the bus talking with the driver, and a strange bed every night. I treasure the people I got to live with and the beauty of biking the bluffs and canoeing the river. I loved the view from the campus bluff, the riot of autumn color, and the first hint of vernal green of the river trees across the then empty bottom land below the campus. I remember fondly the Creamee Freeze, and discovering with friends the nickname, “Whippydip.” I remember the shock, disbelief, and acute loss of the gym fire, and the determination and adaptation as the community struggled toward wholeness. The fire in many ways was an echo of my at-that-time journey through feeling alone, broken, and uncertain about where I belonged in the world. So…my favorite memory is from 18 years after graduation. In 1982, I came back to Luther for a conference and decided to bring my then 10-year-old son, Joel, to bike the beauty of the Upper Iowa valley with me. Joel found ways to occupy himself during adult stuff (He told me, “Dad, I just went bowling with a guy named H. George. It was fun.”) At the end of the event, as we walked

away, we met Weston Noble walking across campus towards us. To my amazement, Dr. Noble remembered, and warmly blessed us with his smile and embrace. That deeply healing affirmation is my favorite memory. Memorable Professor(s) or Staff Person(s): Gerhard Forde in his course on Romans helped open my heart to St. Paul’s vision of unconditional love. “There is now no condemnation…” was a wonderful ton of bricks gift, the first step toward the ministry career that has itself been a gift. Weston Noble opened up the wonder of the Spirit waiting to be revealed in music, in the incredible fins on his vast ’57 DeSoto, and in the subtle energy of the Baroque Phrase, Arsis and Thesis. That gift keeps on giving. Most valuable skill or ability acquired at Luther: Luther taught me a skill that has helped shape my life…FALLING DOWN. I fall down quite often. Ladders, bikes, boats, words, all commonly do me in. I am very risk-averse, so I fail more than saner, more cautious people do. Yet people tell me that I’m good at staying sort of relaxed while falling, and thus being better able to get back up again. I have found this inadvertent skill to be a life treasure. So far, at least. When I came to Luther in 1960, I thought my main and maybe only great skill was playing the baritone horn. Right away I failed to make it into the Concert Band that was to go on the grand centennial sea voyage to Norway. Ooftah! Big fall. Then over time Luther showed me that grace happens, that life and music go on, and that things have a way of working for good in surprising ways. Comments: The memory work, looking at old pictures, and preparing for what is in some ways a celebration of dreaded oldness has been a sweet gift. It is a little like being invited to revisit Pulpit Rock or the trails in Phelps Park. There’s a sense of fullness and time tested beauty in this remembering. Thanks for the invitation!

Favorite College Memory: My favorite memory is living at Vanaheim my senior year. One memory particularly stands out. At the end of the school year everyone at Vanaheim had gotten a job for the fall. As we had decided ahead of time, we went on campus at night to ring the college bell seventeen times – one time for each of us. That started a riot with the freshmen at Olson Hall who were in a high energy mode because they were bidding on rooms for the following year. (Our Vanaheim group continues to send a round robin and get together for four days in June at Karen and Mike Austad’s farm).

Memorable Professor(s) or Staff Person(s): Dr. David Johnson was a memorable professor for me. Although I wasn’t a sociology major or minor, I took his classes because of his reputation as a brilliant lecturer with a sense of humor. I learned so much from him. In 2004, I went to Romania/Transylvania when I learned David was leading the group (even though I’d had no contact with him since graduation). David performed wonderfully keeping the Democrats and Republicans on the trip civil to each other (it was an election year). Mrs. Finanger was the housemother at Larsen Hall my junior year when I was a counselor. She was gracious and charming, as she let the counselors use her kitchen to make birthday cakes, etc…In difficult situations, she would be tactful, yet be a disciplinarian.

Most valuable skill or ability acquired at Luther: Luther provided the skills I needed for teaching through its student teaching program and some of the education classes I took. The classes I took outside of my major provided the general liberal arts skills that have proved useful throughout my life whether it was in my career or life experiences.

Comments: I tried downhill skiing for the first time at the Nordic Ski Hill in February 1962. I took a spill and broke my leg. Three months later the cast came off. That was the last time I tried downhill skiing! I was honored to receive the Luther 1994 Distinguished Service Award.

Started out with a semester at Hillside, Illinois. Then I joined the US Peace Corps and went to Malaysia where I taught in Batu Kikir English Medium Primary School. After a short time I moved to Negri Sembilan Teacher Training College where I taught English and Child Psychology. During this time I met Christopher, an officer in the British Army. This meant a life of many moves and jobs. I have taught in a two-teacher primary school to running a course in conversational English for Japanese university students in Macau (which is now part of China). Despite all the moves, I managed to climb the career ladder and was Acting Head of a primary school in England and ran an English-medium primary school within a Mandarin-medium primary school in Hong Kong. Since retiring I have spent the past seven summers in various parts of China teaching spoken English to the teachers there. Retirement Date: August 2002 Current Work (if any): Lots of work – mostly with children and at church; however, no pay! Number of Children: 2 – one boy and one girl Number of Grandchildren: 6 Places lived since graduation: USA, Malaysia, England, Germany, Hong Kong, and Macau Favorite College Memory: Spending a weekend canoeing down the Upper Iowa River. Yes, we capsized, but only once. Memorable Professor(s) or Staff Person(s): Dr. Helen Strand – the mother figure to all aspiring Elementary Education majors. Most valuable skill or ability acquired at Luther: Of course to teach. Especially useful was being able to write in a straight line on the blackboard. Those minutes of practice at the beginning of lessons paid off. Amazes my non-teacher friends. AND the advice to visit the first day of school at my local school to see how to do it. I also took a semester of organ lessons. When we lived in Germany they were desperate for someone to play the organ at church. As I got paid for it, I guess I was a professional… Comments: I thank Luther that I don’t smoke. Having to go off campus to smoke just made it too difficult to even think about. I wonder what happens these days…The best thing is the friends I made 54 years ago as Freshman and still have today. We have seen life!

Most valuable skill or ability acquired at Luther: Learning to identify issues and then the skills to research and write about them. Places lived since graduation: Des Moines, Dubuque, Mason City, Charles City, Clinton, DeWitt, and Decorah, IA Favorite College Memory: I had served in the military for four years before starting my education at Luther (I entered the military at age 17 and was honorably discharged at age 21). Because of my military experience, I certainly felt it to be a privilege to attend Luther, and at no time did I take it for granted. Sondra and I married on 12/9/1961, and spent time in married student housing across the highway from the swimming pool. Occasionally on warm nights, I would climb over the Municipal Pool fence for a late refreshing swim. I was always impressed with enthusiasm, knowledge, and sincerity of our instructors. Memorable Professor(s) or Staff Person(s): I enjoyed all of our instructors and support staff. To be fair, I think that I would have to list everyone I came in contact with, including the good people in the Treasurer’s Office who found ways for me to stay current with my tuition bill (keep in mind that there was no GI Bill then, but after the Vietnam Nam War it was re-established, so had I gone for my MBA, I would have received assistance). For me, one of the things that made Luther so special was the accessibility of all of our instructors, and classes were taught by professors and associate professors, not teaching assistants. Most valuable skill or ability acquired at Luther: Oral and written communication. Comments: Approximately two years ago I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, which is an incurable cancer of the plasma cells. Although I feel ill every day, I am doing quite well and am staying as active as possible. I’m receiving treatment at Mayo Clinic in Hematology/Oncology, and my dear wife tells me that I haven’t once complained. One great advantage that we have had working and living in Decorah, and then coming back to Decorah to retire, is getting to know many of the Luther faculty and staff on a personal basis. We are fortunate to have established a wonderful friendship with Dr. and Mrs. Farwell, and have been priviledged to entertain them in our home. I have an incredible amount of respect for them, and they are two of my favorite people on this earth. I have had a very blessed life!
