This is a Chinese name; the family name is Luo.Luo Ben (c. 1330–1400[1]), better known by his style name Luo Guanzhong (Mandarin pronunciation: [lwɔ kwantʂʊŋ]),was a Chinese writer of the early Ming Dynasty period of Chinese history. He was also known as Huhai Sanren(Chinese: 湖 海 散 人; pinyin: Húhǎi Sǎnrén; literally "Leisure Man of Lakes and Seas"). Luo was attributed withwriting Romance of the Three Kingdoms and editing Water Margin, two of the Four Great Classical Novels ofChinese literature.

IdentityLuo is confirmed to have lived during the late Yuan Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty by the record of hiscontemporary, play writer Jia Zhongming (賈 仲 明), who met him in 1364. It states that he was from Taiyuan, while literary historians suggest other possibilities about his home, including Hangzhou and Jiangnan. According toMeng Fanren (孟 繁 仁), Luo can be identified in the pedigree of the Luo family, and Taiyuan is most likely hishome town.Recent research has suggested that his date of birth was between 1315-1318.[2]

WorksThe stories forming the bulk of Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Water Margin are thought to have beendeveloped by many independent storytellers. Shi Naian is thought to be the first to assemble Water Margin into aunified work, and Luo subsequently brought it to the current form of 100 chapters. Luo is usually considered theauthor of Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Pingyao Zhuan (平 妖 傳) is a ghost story attributed to Luo with 20 chapters, developed from the original pieces ofstorytelling based on a rebellion at the end of the Northern Song Dynasty, and later expanded by Feng Menglong(馮 夢 龍) into 40 chapters. Can Tang Wudai Shi Yanzhuan (殘 唐 五 代 史 演 義 傳) is a chronicle of the endof the Tang Dynasty and the following Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period, a compilation of storytellingpieces based on the rebellion of Zhu Wen.
