Restorative Justice: A Path to Healing Tues., May 7, 7:00 – 9:00 pm, LC Community Rm

In the wake of the ongoing clergy abuse scandal, the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis has led the way with programs addressed at healing the harm. Jus-tice Janine Geske has led conversations on restorative justice at the Vatican and throughout the world. Justice Geske will be joined by Father Dan Griffith from Our Lady of Lourdes in Minneapolis. Father Griffith will introduce restorative justice in a biblical and theological context. Justice Geske will then share more about this work from her experience and introduce and conduct a healing circle.

In November, Lumen Christi Catholic Community sponsored a listening session on the abuse crisis. We are pleased to offer this opportunity as part of a continuing conversation in the parish.

Speakers:

Janine Geske, former Justice on the Wisconsin Supreme Court and Marquette Law School professor

Father Dan Griffith, Pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Wenger Family Fellow of Law

Please join us after the 10:30 Mass.

Monthly Food Shelf Collection This Weekend Your support ensures fresh, nutritious food is available to those most vulnerable in our community. Thank you for your generosity.

Today’s Readings

Living Rosary Friday, May 10, 8:30, in the Church

Did you know the rosary is recited at 7:15 am before the 7:45 am Mass and a half hour before funerals? This dedi-cated group will join 7th and 8th graders from Highland Catholic in saying a Living Rosary. A Living Rosary is a unique way to pray the rosary aloud in a group setting, with each individual participant representing a bead and leading a prayer. Please join us for a shared prayer experience between Lumen Christi parishioners and Highland Catholic students. This will be hosted in the main church, and all grades will attend. We will honor Mary, meditate on Christ’s life and send our school children off to summer prayer- fully. All are welcome to attend! If you are interested in participating or assisting, please contact Olivia Gojkovic, [email protected]; 917-957-7718.

Faith Formation

The Gospel today sees Peter and his colleagues after the Resurrection, returning to Galilee and resuming the fami-ly business. They are fishing by night. Although it is true that fish feed by night, the mention of darkness here is more about the human spirit than it is about fishing ad-vice. Modern life keeps darkness effectively under con-trol; much of the world has been glowing radiantly through the night for a century. Yet just as surely as the Risen Christ breaks into Peter’s fishing, so does he break into the usual patterns of our own darkness, electric lights notwithstanding. It is Easter, and we are the people of the light. In our tradition, Evening Prayer, celebrated in monaster-ies, parishes, cathedrals, and homes everywhere, is a kind of solemn protest against the darkness and its claims, an act of praise for our light-bearing God, and a commitment to carrying that light forward. Sunset is a turning point of our day, felt less acutely in an electrified world, but still an effective reminder that one day dark-ness overtakes us all. Yet our Eastering has taught us in a hundred ways that the victory belongs to the Bearer of Light. Easter summons us to transform our everyday “blackouts,” perhaps in a way as simple as a whispered prayer of thanks at evening for the blessings of the day. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Immigration Myth: Undocumented immigrants don’t pay taxes and bur-den the national economy. Immigrants who are undocumented pay taxes every time they buy taxable goods such as gas, clothes or new appli-ances (depending on where they reside). They also con-tribute to property taxes—a main source of school fund-ing—when they buy or rent a house or apartment. A 2017 report from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy highlights that undocumented immigrants pay an estimated $11.74 billion in state and local taxes a year. The U.S. Social Security Administration estimated that in 2010 undocumented immigrants—and their employers—paid $13 billion in payroll taxes alone for benefits they will never get. They can receive schooling and emergen-cy medical care but not welfare or food stamps. Under the 1996 welfare law, most government programs re-quire proof of documentation, and even immigrants with documents cannot receive these benefits until they have been in the United States for more than five years.
