Lucy Rose - Middle Of The Bed

Page 2: Lucy rose

Lucy Rose is an English Folk/Indie singer who has stated that her inspirations for music have been Neil Young and Joni Mitchell.

Accordingly with her musical genre her music videos tend to be artistic and thought-provoking rather than big-budget high-concept, which is what our video intends to be.

Her folky/indie image is expressed through her physical look as well as musical style and lyrical content.

The majority of the video is simply different mid-close up shots of her singing directly to the camera in different locations.

We definitely want to incorporate the use of different backgrounds in our video when the star is singing straight to the camera.

Although very simple, we think it looks very interesting and aesthetically pleasing to watch, due to the different lighting, backgrounds, outfits etc.. that change with each shot.

EditingThe editing through the video is steady and matches the beat of the drum and guitar. Each shot only lasts about 2-4 seconds.

There is no fancy editing style or transitions. The editing feels very natural, almost unnoticeable. We intend for our editing to be simple rather than use lots of elaborate effects.

I think that the genre of the music determines how the editing should be. Because this song is folky it makes sense that the editing style and pace should be natural and consistent rather than all over place, in order for it to match the mood of the song. As our video is folky/indie, we will be following this rule.

Although there is no concrete narrative to this video, there is a slight sense of beginning and end to the video as the beginning shots and ending shots are in the same location/she is wearing the same outfit.

1st shot - shows her walking into place.

Final shot - shows her walking away again

This creates a sense of structure to the story she is telling us and adds slight narrative to a non-narrative video.

Why this video is influentialThis video is an example of the sort of look we want to achieve in our own work.

We admire Lucy Rose's folky style and as our song is of a similar genre we hope to include some things from her video into ours, such as different wintery jumpers and other outfits.

We also like the lack of narrative as it is not needed to make this video interesting. Although our video has a slight narrative we have kept it pretty basic and open to interpretation of the viewers which is similar to how Lucy Rose presents her videos, she allows viewers to consider their own opinions and meanings from her music videos.

We appreciate her non-commercial style and understated look. Many music videos today, especially in mainstream music, focus on making the artist stand out as much as possible by using over the top outfits and makeup or props, however with this genre and style of music simplicity is often the best option rather than trying too hard.
