May was a very eventful month. The Match Play Championship is underway, the Ladies Mini Invitational had a great field, and the 2019 Cabrillo Classic in officially in the books. Despite a few days of crazy weather in May, it has been an amazing golf month with spectacular course conditions and outstanding weather (despite a few midwesterny type down-pours.

We’re getting new merchandise in the shop all the time (including a couple new Scotty Cameron putters just this past week). We’ve also got a new line of sunglasses by Bendetti that are fully polarized and sell for just $40. These things have a shockingly good lens and a lifetime warranty. Something I’ve never seen at this ‘disposable’ price-point. And don’t forget, we have demos from Callaway, Mizuno, Ping and XXIO for you to try on the range or the course. Be sure to ask next time you’re in the golf shop and we’ll get you set up to try something out.

The NCGA will be out in early June to do a new course rating. This will most likely affect our slope and rating ever so slightly. They re-rate each course every several years to make sure minor changes haven’t significantly altered the rating. It’s getting this rating system exactly right on each different golf course that enables our Handicap Indices to travel fairly between golf courses.

See you at the Club,

~ Paul

We had 2 aces this past month; both on the same hole and on the same day!

Congratulations to Caron Poole for making her ace on Hole #17 on May 31st! Caron aced it from 133 yards.

Then about 2 hours later Bryan Bullard decided to duplicate the feat, scoring his own hole in one from 190 yards on hole #17 as well. Congratulations to both of our most recent ace-makers!

Congratulations to Caron & Bryan!

Susan Bishop – Handicap ChairCongratulations to Lisa Pae - Most Improved for May going from a 17.01 to a 14.6. Wow!

Did you know that the Golf Shop conducts several random handicap audits of all CV members on a monthly basis? The purpose of these random audits are to ensure that all players are posting their scores on a timely basis to create a fair and equitable playing field for all players. If during an audit, it’s determined that a CVWG player has not been posting scores on a regular basis, that person will not be eligible for the Most Improved Player award for any given month.

Also, if you signed up to play with the Golf Shop but then opted to not play, please let the Golf Shop know so that you are not on the tee sheet. This will help with the auditing process as well. Questions? Contact Susan Bishop.

A Message from StaceyI’m looking forward to our sunny June! Let’s all get out and enjoy our great group of ladies. I have one challenge for each of you this month. Pick up the phone and text or call someone you’ve never played with and invite them out to play. Let’s try and get every CVWG member out in June.

Email me when you’ve have met this challenge. Your name will go into a drawing for a prize.

Are you messages from CVWG going into your gmail “Promotions” folder? To have a mailchimp message go straight to your inbox, drag and drop the message into your “Primary” folder. You will be asked if you want to make this message permanent - say yes and the CVWG messages will go straight to your primary folder in gmail.

Don’t forget, upload your pictures to our CV Women’s Group Facebook page or email/text me any pictures you take playing with the ladies.

See you all out on the course!

Cabrillo Parrish Barker Memorial HorseraceThis past year we lost a dear friend and perennial Cabrillo competitor, Parrish Barker. To honor Parrish’s memory we renamed the Cabrillo Horserace after him. We also used the horserace to generate a Memorial fund which will be used to help area junior sports. This year we raised $1540 to go toward junior sports. It was a good feeling knowing the horserace this year had a ‘higher purpose’.

Thank you to everyone who played in this year’s Cabrillo Classic. We had to stay loose and adapt to and roll with the weather, but when all was said and done we had another outstanding event.

Superintendent UpdateIs it true that the more strict the regulations are on the course the better the turf conditions will be?

We want to continue encouraging all our players to help us prevent some unnecessary turf compaction and share some of the ways to prevent irreversible turf damage during the Summer months.

The soil structure gets too compacted to the point that water does not penetrate. Also, it starts to lose macroporosity; therefore, it depletes the oxygen availability. Irreversible consequences such as Poa annua and weeds will be the only plant capable of growing there. Long term consequences can be detrimental to turf quality, but we can prevent some.

Here’s how you can help! Pair up with another player to avoid taking an extra golf cart. We ask to avoid the Rough areas (turf adjacent to the fairways) pick a designated area to go into the fairway, but

leave the cart inside the fairways while you go hit the ball. The turf inside the fairways is more tolerant than rough areas. The turf in the fairways is warm season turf. It tolerates the heat and more stress. The rough on the other hand, is more susceptible to heat and poor compaction levels. That is the main reason we ask to avoid turning on the roughs and by maintaining carts in the fairways will prevent soil compaction.

Thank you for helping us maintain your course in better conditions!

Thank you for your support ~ Your Turf Care Team
