SUBJECT: Burn-In Testing of Radiac Sets, AN/VDR-1 on Automatic TestEquipment

Commanding GeneralU.S. Army Electronics CommandATTN: AMSEL-CT-HDK (Mr. Martin Jachter)Fort Movnouth, New Jersey 07703

1. As per discussions during meetings at Tobyhanna Army Depot betweenMr. Martin Jachter, Fort Monmouth, and Automatic Test Equipment Divisionpersonnel, it was established that the Radiac Set AN/YVDR-1 is feasiblefor automatic testing and cost effective, since it will be a high densityitem. It was also established that Automatic Test Equipment Divisionwould write programs for the sets and perform burn-in testing of approxi-mately 15 preproduction sets.-

2. The burn-in testing will be accomplished utilizing an EnvironmentalChamber, Radiation Calibrator AN/UDM-2 and automatic test equipment(GATE System).

3. Each Radiac Set will be tested against the parameters set forth inthe Qualitative Material Requirements (QR),. with the exception of thevibration tests. The vibration tests will be performed at Fort Monmouthlaboratories where a shake table is available that will meet the frequencyrequirements of 500 cycles as per telephone conversation with Mr. Jachterof 26 October 1972.

4. In general, the Radiac Sets, AN/VDR-1 will be tested for:

a. Compliance with voltage and resistance parameters in the quiescentstate through all operating modes and ranges.

b. Voltage levels, waveforms and frequencies through all operatingmodes and ranges while under signal stimulation from the Radiation Source,AN/UDM- 2.

c. Stability of operating functions during temperature and life testing. This will include periodic testing on ATE of all waveforms and voltages whileunder signal stimulation from the AN/UDM-2.

5. All testing of the Radiac Set, AN/VDR-l will be performed with strictadherence to the following:

a. Compliance with ECOM instructions on use of the Radiac Calibrator,AN/UDM-2, and radiation safety precautions.

b. Imnediate report of any incidents such as loss, contamination orhigh exposure of personnel to Radiological Protection Officer, FortMonmouth, New Jersey.

c. Contain information of any incidents until additional advice orassistance can be obtained from Radiological Protection Officer, FortMonmouth, New Jersey.

6. Automatic Test Equipment Division, Tobyhanna Army Depot, will provideall data collected on automatic test equipment, analysis of data and areport of the tests and results.

7. Programming effort will include the following:

a. A functional end-to-end test program for the overall unit whichwill be used to perform the Burn-In testing of the Radiac Set. Thisprogram will require approximately six (6) weeks to writeland validate.Fault isolation will be down to the module wherever possible.

b. A functional end-to-end test program will be written for each ofthe six (6) printed circuit boards (PCB's) with fault isolation to thesmallest group of components or single component when possible. Estimatedtime to write and validate the six (6) programs is 36 weeks/approximatelysix (6) weeks per board.

c. Engineering and support effort will be required to design andfabricate interface adapters for the overall unit and associated PCB's.

8. Functional testing of the overall Radiac Set will begin approximately48 working days after receipt of production units and establishment ofall parameters. Testing should be completed with a 650-hour time frame.

9. A cost estimate for the testing effort is $10,000.00. Any additionaltesting which carries the test program beyond the time frame noted inItem (8 will require additional funding.
