Reaching out remains the

abiding theme of the CSR arm

of L&T Construction and one

more expression of this in the

area of ‘Skill Development’

was when they joined hands

with Rehoboth (a shelter

involved in the vocational

rehabilitation of the mentally

and physically challenged) to

develop a sustainable model

of income generation for

destitute mentally / physically

challenged women.

Apart from constructing a

t ra in ing-cum-product ion

centre, the scope of the

project includes skill building

for the women, therapeutic

intervention and vocational

rehabilitation all under the

ambit of this single initiative.

ENABLING THE dIFFERENTLy ABLEd The project was conceived

to be sustainable and fetch

returns from social enterprise,

the profits from which could

be utilized to rehabilitate

the destitute women being

nursed at Rehoboth.

Although labelled ‘Mentally

and Physically Challenged’,

these women possess

extraordinary abilities and

strength. The project aims

to provide a platform for

these women to reveal their

potential, individually or

collectively as a team, and

thereby empower them to

be financially and socially

independent.

professional trainers. Once trained, these women folk start

making products on their own that are sold for a small profit.

The cycle continues with scheduled time line of activities

and marketing linkages. This training is also a therapeutic

intervention for the stressed women.

L&T is keenly associated with the project providing strategic

guidance, professional technical and marketing support.

LEARNING

The Single Teacher Schools programme, L&T Construction’s flagship CSR initiative, was started in 2014 as an integrated approach to rural development aimed at improving the learning capability of children (primary and middle levels) through community learning centers. Today, as many as 3125 children in 125 hamlets in the districts of Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur in Tamil Nadu are enjoying the benefits of the programme.

The standard bearers of primary education in rural India are the

schools located across remote locales that strive hard to sow the seeds

of learning. Most of these learning centers are engaged in educating first generation learners and in spreading

the importance of education to the surrounding community. L&T, through

its vast network of project sites, has been playing a pivotal role in supporting

such institutions with a range of infrastructure and study essentials.

Here are footprints of the many small initiatives by project sites that have

resulted in big gains for the learners.
