According to Polistico, the number o registeredvoters or acloban couldbe higher i all those whowent to their oce to regis-ter were able to do so.

Tat number couldbe higher. I was expectingthe nal list at more than120,000, Polistico said.

Te city elections ocersaid that there were stillthousands o potential andqualied voters who ailedto register last October 31,the last day o registrationor the May,2013 elections.

On the last day o regis-tration, Polistico said, about

a 1,000 persons were notable to do so.

It was learned rom thecity elections ocer thatthe 109,027 nal list o reg-istered voters or aclobanwas higher compared to the2010 registered o voters.

For that period, acloban has only 93,472registered voters.

    Meantime, Polistico saidthat o the 109,027 regis-tered voters o acloban,about 39,000 o them haveyet to revalidate their regis-tration.

Tis means, she said, they have yet to have their

    biometrics beore their o-

    ce.But they can still vote

in the May, 2013 elections.Te reason or taking theirbiometrics is to expeditethe process during the elec-tions, Polistico said.

She added that with thepictures o the voters, itwould now be easy or theteachers who are acting asboard o elections inspec-tors to easily identiy thevoters.

And this will do awayso-called fying voters orsubsitution o voters, Polis-tico said.

    Things To

    Minddoms pagliawan

oxing legends come and go. They rise to

prominence, but they dont stay on top for

life. There always comes a time when, de-spite their greatness, they have to make an exit, ei-

ther on account of defeat, or for reasons of ageing.

Manny Pacquiao is one such legend. He started

boxing as a kid, moved up from one division to the

next, made it to fame and affluence, and raked infor himself millions of dollars in his mega-fights,

ending up on top of the sport as the no. 1 pound-

for-pound boxer and the first and only eight-divi-

    sion champion of the world.

Ferocious in the ring, Pacquiao was revered and

feared even by the bigger guys in heavier divisions.

Most of them fell at his hands till he seemed to have

run out of worthy opponents. Numerous awards

then came his way as a result, in recognition of

his greatness. He was eventually regarded as

a national treasure, a living hero who inspired

the Filipino spirit and hoisted our national

    pride in the global arena.

But his ascent to greatness has an end. His

stay on top of the sport is obviously over. Like

the rest, he could not stay there forever; andalthough he made it there once, his time is

done, which means that, try as he does, some-

body or some circumstances will always stand

in the way to deny him a perpetual place on

top. Against that fate, he just could not make

    any headway.

Simply put, Pacquiao as of now is already

    past his prime.

People have the tendency topresume that when devastatingcalamities strike resulting in mas-sive deaths, like the recent disas-ter in Mindanao brought aboutby yphoon Pablo, God is alwaysto blame, as i it were His ault, orHis obligation, to prevent suchcatastrophes rom happening.

Tey are then quick to ask:Where is God? What is he do-ing? Well, these are but some otheir questions asked mockinglyin the ace o overwhelming de-struction, suering, and loss o

lives. Tey grimace in disbelie, indeance, in anger. O all people, things, and beings, God gets thegreatest blame, even singled outat times.

Tis is nothing new; suchan attitude has been there sincetime immemorial. I some peoplecould aord to blame God even

just or the death o a lovedone, how much more i thepathetic victims amountto hundreds and hundredso thousands. Tis, to the

critical minds, makes Godso cruel, irresponsible, in-utile, and heartless or al-lowing those tragic deathsto occur.

Considering the painthat the victims and theirloved ones experience, we

might indeed think thisattitude toward God is un-derstandable, even justi-able. Tese people are justbeing concerned with oth-

ers so to say. Whoever isresponsible or their saetyand ails to attend to thatduty would draw uponhimsel their judgmentalindignation, even i itsGod who will have to reaptheir animosity.

Viewed rom the bibli-cal standpoint, however,we will nd this attituderather selsh, inappro-priate, and blasphemous. Why blame God or peo-ples eventual deaths whenthat phenomenon is butpart o our existence, ando Gods design? WhenGod created the angels,He designed them as spiritbeings destined to live oreternity. Similarly, we hu-mans are also eternal be-

ings; we will likewise liveorever. Unlike angels, though, we were given atwo-old existenceoneis physical, and the other, spiritual. Physical exist-ence is short-lived, but thesecond one is without end.

Tuesday of the 2nd Week of AdventIs 40:1-11; Ps 96; Mt 18:12-14

THE PARABLE OF THE LOST SHEEP

Jesus said to his disciples, What is your opinion? If a man has ahundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills and go search of the astray? And if he nds it, amen, Isay to you, he rejoices more over it than over the ninety-nine that didnot stray. In just the same way, it is not the will of your heavenly Fatherthat one of these little ones be lost.

    THE QUESTION

Jesus asked his disciples for their opinion but he began to tell themhis own idea about it rst: what would a man do if one of his sheepstrays away? If he values each of his sheep, he would go and look forit. That sheep represents money, equal to several days wages. The mancould not afford to lose the sheep. He will not say to himself Let it go,I still have many more. Even that one is too precious to him to let go

so easily. Do I reect that when Jesus spoke of that one lost sheep, hecould have been speaking of me? I am precious to Jesus. He knows thevalue of my soul. How do I value this soul of mine that was breathedinto me by the breath of God? (Daily Gospel Now, R. caused by typhoon Pablo

    were so gripping that the

    residents in areas that could

    have been affected by it

    were so grateful to have

    escaped such destruction.

    One of these areas gra-

    ciously spared was Eastern

    Visayas, except Southern

Leyte as it was at the skirts

    of typhoon Pablos path.

    Two deaths were reported

    in the region according to

    OCD regional director Rey

    Gozon. There is yet, how-

ever, no ofcial tally of the

    extent of damage to agri-

    culture and infrastructure as

    reports from affected towns

are yet to be retrieved. The

    Public Works regional of-

    ce declared that damage

to infra is not signicant, in

    fact roads remained pass-

    able.

    Again, Eastern Visayas

was fortunate that it was not

among the turfs hit by tropi-

    cal storm Pablo. However,

    such event is not enough

reason to sit back and relax

    considering that, as PAG-

    ASA predicted, there will

    still be six more typhoons

    to visit the Philippine area

of responsibility before the2012 calendar closes. As

    to where these cyclones

will fall is a chilling guess-

work. For now, the region is

    lucky, too blessed especial-

ly that it was just slammed

by a typhoon Ofel. In fact,

    Tacloban City was declared

    under state of calamity for

the extent of damage that it

    wrought. Surely, calamity

When our earthly livesend, death eventually oc-

curs. But its just a gatewayor us to enter into the sec-ond phase o our existence, which is spiritual. No mat-ter how one dies, tragic ormild, the same thing hap-pensthe body becomeslieless and will soon turnto dust o which it is made. But, again, this doesntmean cessation o ones ex-istence as it is merely part othe creators design.

Should we blame Godor this design? Should weaccuse Him o cruelty, ir-

responsibility, negligence, etc. just because a lovedone proceeded to the sec-ond phase o his existenceto join the so-called spiritworld? Does it make Godso inutile just because hun-dreds o thousands perished(physically) in a devastatingdisaster? Does He becomeless o a God just becauseHis design remTis is some-thing to ponder on.

    Why blame...from page 4

    funds have been utilized to

    assist the victims and this

    fund is now depleted. Some

    people toyed in their mind

    the question: had Eastern

    Visayas been hit by Pablo,

    would there be enough ca-

lamity funds to use for the

    Pablo onslaught?

    There is no doubt that

    local government units in

    the region are prepared for

    eventualities made by na-

    ture with doable disaster

    risk reduction and manage-

    ment plans in place. From

    prevention and mitigation

    to preparedness to disaster

    response on to recovery

    and rehabilitation, disaster

    risk reduction and manage-

    ment councils have thei

bags full ready to face the

    challenge when calamitie

    strike. Notwithstanding thi

    state of readiness, getting

cue or simply a lesson fro

    the recent Compostela Val

    ley incident, the evacuatio

    centers should be safe fro

    unexpected assault of na

    ture. The affected resident

    should also be sensitive

    to the natures actuation

    and heed the danger warn

    ings to avoid mishap. Be

ing able to escape harm o

death is luck to some, but t

    those who have strong fait

in the One True God, it i

    grace and blessing that the

    should be ever grateful for.

Placing the blame onparents or their supposedinability to support theneeds and aspirations othe amily is simply un-just. Every man has thataspiration to support theneeds o the amily butthe lack o economic op-portunities disables hiscapacity to do so. Te co-lonial tag that Filipinosare lazy had been unjustly

perpetuated in the publicconsciousness by our or-eign invaders.

Such label was madeupon our orebears whoresisted hard labor beingimposed by our coloniz-ers. Te unwillingness torender orced labor causedcolonizers to brand ourorebears with unpleasanttags, mainly that o beinglazy. Such sweeping de-scription had been etcheddown generations that

someway became an ac-cepted belie to some sec-tors without veriying theroots o such unjust tag.

It is the exploits oour overseas workers thatgradually changed the tagthat had been sustained in

    Conceptions misconceptionsSecond of a series

the public consciousnessor generations. With Fili-

pinos earning the admira-tion o oreign employersor their industry, peoplechanged their belie thatthey are lazy. It is that traito being industrious andhardworking that makesFilipino workers in de-mand by oreign employ-ers. Our country had sup-plied so much manpowerto the global communityand we have maintainedthat reputation o beingindustrious in the eld o

    work.Tis trait o Filipino

workers is a clear manies-tation o our desire to earnin order to support ouramily. Tere is no doubtwe possess that will andability to provide or the

sustenance o our amily. It is the lack o opportu-

nities or gainul employ-ment and or productiveeconomic activities thatcause us to alter in ourcommitment to supportthe amily. Our workersin the domestic arena areinto varied orms o ex-ploitation, chie o thembeing underemployed, overworked and under-paid.

We cannot pretend tobe blind rom the realitiesin society where our work-

ers are toiling beyond reg-ular working hours underinconvenient workingconditions or a pay thatcould hardly support theamily. People renderinglabor with utmost dedica-tion and industry but are

paid unjust compensationthat are way below mini-mum standards. Tereare laws that purports toprotect labor, requiringemployers to compensatetheir workers or their la-bor. Workers only earn somuch less than what theneeds o their amilies, causing deprivation thatis depicted as ault by theworker than o the unjust

    social order.People are being duped

to believe that the pov-erty that the amily suersis caused by the lack ocommitment and will andability o the head o theamily, or the parents, tosupport the amily. Suchbelie is not unlike the tago us Filipinos being a lazypeople that had been per-petuated by our colonizersdown several generations. It is one great conception

that is actually a miscon-ception or in truth it isnot the lack o will or abil-ity or commitment to sup-port the amily that causepoverty and hardship.
