Lebanon A glimpse of history Lebanon is one of the world's most colorful destinations when it comes to tourist attractions. The country enjoys magnificent historical sites left behind by ancient civilizations like Phoenicians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Macedonians, Romans and other great empires... Nice places to visit Since Lebanon is a small country, incoming students would be able to visit most of it during their stay. Some of the nice places they can visit include of course the capital Beirut, with its many neighborhoods, such as Hamra and Gemayze, known for their restaurants and unbeatable nightlife. Tripoli, Lebanon’s second largest city located in the north of the country, is a must to walk around old souks, and taste exquisite street food and lebanese sweets. The Beqaa valley is highly recommended for any wine lover, since it’s home to Lebanon's famous vineyards and wineries, as well as the best lebanese cuisine along the Berdawni river. To the south of Lebanon, the best public beaches in the country can be found in Tyre. Finally, the famous cedars of Lebanon that can be found in the magnificent Cedars of God, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most famous monuments Must-see masterpieces include the Temple of Bacchus and the Roman ruins in Baalbeck; the ancient city of Byblos, which is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world; the Beiteddine palace in the Chouf district; the Sidon Sea Castle, built by the Crusaders almost 800 years ago; the ancient Phoenician city of Tyre, with its famous fishing harbor; and the breathtaking Jeita Grotto. Most famous dishes Of course, the lebanese meze is world-famous, with dishes such as hummus, baba ghannouj, labneh, kebbe, and shanklish, and salads such as the tabbouleh or fattoush. Famous lebanese street food includes manakeesh, or the lebanese pizza, traditionally sprinkled with either cheese, ground meat, or dried thyme and olive oil, ideal for breakfast or lunch. Shawarma, the delicious shaved meat or chicken sandwich, was voted best sandwich in the world for the year 2015. And finally, who can forget about the mouthwatering lebanese sweets and pastries, such as baklava and knefe.
