Liquid Plastics Takes Centre Stage at Olympic Ceremony
British company Liquid Plastics, manufacturers of specialist waterproof membranes,
recently played a major role in the 2004 Olympics Opening Ceremony in Athens.
The imaginative concept of turning a 5500m² wooden stage into a lake to form the
centrepiece of the Ceremony was realised by Stage One Creative Services for Jack
Morton Public Events - Producers of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
This large volume of water needed to be carefully contained to avoid damaging the
arena as any leaks could have caused significant disruption to the start of the
Games.
Decothane SP, one of Liquid Plastics top-selling liquid membranes, normally used for
waterproofing rather more permanent roof structures, was the final choice to play this
role because of the strength and resistance of the material when reinforced with
Liquid Plastics Reemat Glass Fibre Matting.
There were also several other reasons for the choice of product: Decothane SP is
simple to apply and the work can be done quickly, allowing for application to be
carried out by the client's own labour force. The system is also elastomeric thus
providing flexibility for structural movements, particularly at the board joints.
Decothane SP was also available in the specified colour and proved to be fully
compatible with the client's own non-slip coating.
The lake was the setting for the Olympic Opening Ceremony, which hosted an array
of artists. The grand finale was a set of flaming Olympic rings, which appeared to be
floating on the lake. This also posed no problem for Decothane SP as it has passed
some of the highest fire ratings available and is proven to not support any spread of
flame. Furthermore, Decothane SP has the ability to self-extinguish.
Decothane SP, one of a complete range of specialist coatings from Liquid Plastics,
has been used on the roofs of many high profile international projects including Abu
Dhabi Airport, the Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank New York Headquarters and the
Melrose Arch Residential & Retail project in South Africa.
