Welcome to LMUDear Parents,

Welcome to LMU! Steeped in great history and tradition, both our Jesuit and Marymount traditions set the foundation upon which we continue to build and grow.

We hope that you see firsthand the care that we take to create an environment of academic, personal, spiritual and professional growth. At LMU your student will be challenged to grow by their interactions in the classroom, by co-curricular experiences and by their fellow classmates. We are all privileged to be a part of their journey as they strive to become the best version of themselves, each with the opportunity to learn where their gifts and talents lie, and how to use them in the world.

We encourage you to empower your student to embrace the challenges they will face during their college years. The best way for you to help your student is to encourage them to use all the resources available to them at LMU, be involved on campus, and use every opportunity

to interact with faculty and staff to make their college experience all they imagine it to be.

We realize this year will be filled with many changes for both you and your student, but you are not alone. We will be here to answer questions and provide the resources that you will need to support your son or daughter and “let go.” Parent Pride is LMU’s online resource for parents which feature articles, helpful tips, and other online tools that aid parents during their student’s first year at LMU. If your student provided your email on the common application, you will automatically be uploaded into our system.

The LMU Family Guide has important contact information that you will find helpful throughout your student’s time at LMU and the Parent Programs office is always here to help.

We are looking forward to a great first year!

The college years represent a unique stage of parenting. It is a time that offers new rewards, challenges, questions and concerns. At LMU we hope to provide you with a link to a community of support, ideas and resources as families grow into their ‘revised’ role during college.

Parent Pride, LMU’s online resource for parents, features articles, resourceful tips and other online tools that aid parents during their student’s experience at LMU. There are articles on how to

adjust to college life, how to successfully navigate the first year, ways to get involved and much more! As the parent of a first year

student, if your student provided your email on the common application, then you will automatically be uploaded into our system. The first email will come in mid-July. If you do not receive the email, just contact the Parent Programs office and we will be happy to add you to our distribution list.

We encourage you to get involved during your son or daughter’s four years here, and beyond.

Parents, you can be an LMU advocate in many ways – by helping to recruit new students, attending LMU family gatherings in your area, hosting an event, or volunteering at one of the several family events hosted on campus.

Here are some great ways to get involved:

Freshman Family Send-Offs (weekends throughout July and August 2015): These celebrations are hosted by LMU families and are held regionally for incoming freshmen students.

Welcome Weekend (August 28–30, 2015): Members of the Parent Council support this event by meeting families, talking about their LMU experiences and

answering any last-minute questions during the Family Festival.

Regional Parent Receptions (Fall): Parents have an opportunity to host a reception for parents who live in their hometown.

Preview Day (April 2016): By welcoming the prospective freshman parents and participating on a question and answer panel, our Parent Council members truly add a special perspective to the day’s activities.

Freshman Orientation (June 2016): The Parent Council hosts a wine and cheese reception as a way to meet and mingle with new parents.

Parent CouncilThe LMU Parent Council advances the University’s Mission by working with the Office of Parent Programs & Parent Giving to increase awareness of and support for

Parent Involvement

LMU. The Council promotes communication with current parents as well as parent participation in events, programs, and fundraising activities for LMU.

Bay Area Parent AmbassadorsThis group of LMU ambassadors consists of parents who live in the San Francisco Bay Area. They support and advance the University’s Mission by hosting regional events, encouraging parent participation, and participating in fundraising activities for Loyola Marymount University.

Parents FundAnother way you can be an advocate for your student is by financially supporting the Parents Fund. Gifts to the Parents Fund are a further investment in your student’s future because those funds directly benefit their academic and co-curricular experience. Every gift is meaningful and demonstrates your belief in the transforming power of education.

First To GoThe First To go community provides a source of academic support for students who identify as “first-generation college” (i.e. neither parent has earned a bachelor’s degree in the U.S.).

The community introduces participants of all years and majors to a network of mentors drawn from LMU faculty, staff, and alumni who are former first-generation college students themselves. Social and academic events are offered throughout the semester.

For more information on the many components of First To go — including the first-year Scholar’s program and Spring Writing Workshop — please email [email protected] or call 310.338.7677.

navigating any new place or experience can be a challenge, and the first year of college is one of the biggest challenges most students will encounter. The Student Success Office is here to help make the transition as smooth as possible.

Whether it is trying to figure out how to find information on PROWL, finding a way to get involved on campus, or finding a job within various capacities, First Year Experience in the Student Success Office is the place for first year students to start. First year students can stop by our office to apply for a job, find great opportunities to make connections on campus and to attend specific programs for students who come from out of state. These are just a few of the opportunities provided to students within our office.

The same attention to the first year transition is given to new transfer students as they begin college life at LMU. Within the Student Success Office, Transfer Programs is dedicated to ensuring that new transfer students are provided with the information and resources they need to navigate campus life during their first year. From programming, involvement in campus life, to a living learning community created specifically for new transfers, Transfer Programs understands that the transfer experience is unique and we provide the tools to make that experience a great one.

In the Student Success Office, we understand the importance of your role as parents. We have developed strong ties with the parent community to ensure that if you have any concerns or questions as

As a student-centered university, it is fundamental that LMU has a wide variety

of student organizations.

The issue of sexual misconduct on college campuses has emerged into the national spotlight in recent years. LMU CArES (Campus Awareness resource Education Services) provides education to engage the campus community on what support resources are available to students and how the university responds to this very important topic.

LMU CARES provides programming and trainings to create an ongoing dialogue among the student body about sexual and interpersonal misconduct prevention. Through the “Live the Lion’s Code” campaign, LMU CARES encourages students to live out the mission of the institution by caring for their peers and committing to their own personal growth. LMU CARES assists students in clearly defining consent, providing tangible strategies for bystander intervention, and outlining LMU’s support and reporting resources.

Welcome to LMU! We imagine that this is an exciting time for you and for your son or daughter. Through the many orientation events, we hope that you come to have a good sense of the myriad of opportunities that LMU offers — opportunities for intellectual growth, personal growth, and spiritual growth — the education of the whole person. All of us on the faculty and staff are dedicated to our mission. Campus Ministry is a special place where our mission of “the service of faith and the promotion of justice” is lived out — a place to Belong, Believe, and Become.

The transition of coming to college is enjoyable yet can also be stressful. Campus Ministry has a number of programs to assist in that transition process and to help your child to find a meaningful sense of purpose and belonging at LMU. Please take a look at our offerings and encourage your son or daughter to take full advantage of them. Our campus ministers are also readily available to be a listening ear for your student!

Dining Services– Meal PlansLMU & LMU Hospitality Services have designed meal plans to meet a variety of different dining needs.

Our LION plans offer four different pre-paid Tax Exempt Lion Dollar Options. The plans have a hybrid functionality that provides retail declining balance purchases as well as a fixed number of All You Care to Eat (AYCE) Lair Marketplace Access Points. The Lion Plan AYCE Access points are redeemed one point per AYCE Community Table meal in the Lair Marketplace. AYCE Community Table meals are available Thursday – Sunday. Meal Plan Access Points expire at the

end of each semester, and retail dollars carry forward prior to expiring on July 31 each year. Meal Plans are selected during the Housing assignment process and are non-refundable. Meal Plans are mandatory for all students living in traditional residence halls. Changes between the L, I, O, and N Plans may ONLY be made during the third week of the Fall Semester online at myLMU → Student Housing Online Services → ‘Forms’.

S-DollarsThe S-dollar supplemental meal plan is available to all full-time (12+units) undergraduate students and commuter students. There is no minimum deposit, and S-Dollars can be added to augment

Loyola Marymount University26

a student’s traditional meal plan and by commuters who would like to eat on campus. S-dollars carry forward from year to year as long as students are enrolled at LMU. Similar to Lion Plans, the money spent from your S-dollars is not subject to sales tax and is used for On-Campus Dining venues only. S-dollars may be added online at the ‘Manage My OneCard’ website www.lmu.edu/about/services/cbs/onecard/manage.htm.

Flexi-DollarsFlexi-dollars are fun dollars. There’s more to your OneCard than eating. With Flexi-dollars, students can make transactions in the bookstore, library, and mail distribution center; they can also make copies, do laundry, use Yellow Taxi, or even make

a purchase off campus at any one of the designated LMU OneCard Vendors. Flexi-dollars can also be used at on-campus food service locations, but unlike the LION or S-dollars, purchases will be assessed the applicable sales tax. Flexi-dollars carry over from year to year while the student is actively enrolled at LMU.

You can add Flexi to your student’s account by going online to www.lmu.edu/onecard; this is the easiest and most convenient option. Deposits can also be made immediately using a credit card at the Manage My One Card Website or using cash at any Value Transfer Station (VTS) on campus.

To achieve these important objectives CPD delivers a broad array of career services — commonly partnering with academic departments, administrative and student services colleagues, and employers both on and off campus.

The professional services and programs offered by CPD include: exclusive access to LionJobs, LMU’s online internship/job search database; networking opportunities; personality, skill, and career interest assessment tools; online professional branding, profile development and support; resume and cover letter reviews; career-focused “meet-ups” and workshops; class presentations; large-scale Career-Expos and smaller scale Career Cafés; graduate school fairs; and interview strategy sessions.

At LMU, we encourage students to take ownership of their career pathways, and recognize that career development begins the moment they enter the university, and continues through graduation and beyond.
