■ Low-dose unfractionated heparin preventscatheter-related thrombosis in patients with haemato-oncological disease, report researchers from Tunisia. Before central venous line (CVL) insertion, 111 suchpatients were randomised to receive a continuous IVinfusion of unfractionated heparin 100 IU/kg/day ornormal saline (control group). There were128 evaluable CVLs (65 in the heparin group). Theincidence of catheter-related thrombosis wassignificantly lower in the heparin group than thecontrol group (1.5% vs 12.6% of CVLs). Furthermore, there was a significantly lower rate of catheterdysfunction in the heparin group than the controlgroup (16.9% vs 52%).Abdelkefi A, et al.
