Inpharma 1462 - 6 Nov 2004 Low-dose unfractionated heparin prevents catheter-related thrombosis in patients with haemato- oncological disease, report researchers from Tunisia. Before central venous line (CVL) insertion, 111 such patients were randomised to receive a continuous IV infusion of unfractionated heparin 100 IU/kg/day or normal saline (control group). There were 128 evaluable CVLs (65 in the heparin group). The incidence of catheter-related thrombosis was significantly lower in the heparin group than the control group (1.5% vs 12.6% of CVLs). Furthermore, there was a significantly lower rate of catheter dysfunction in the heparin group than the control group (16.9% vs 52%). Abdelkefi A, et al.
