Infamous Fox is well-loved at CK Racing SUMMERVELD’S GROOMS WANT HIM BACK IN JULY NEXT YEAR

INFAMOUS Fox must be one of the better known horses in Durban July Day history – not for winning the big one – but for winning a Listed race on the day, three years running. Warren Kennedy was the third jock to ride him in this contest, following Nooresh Juglall (2018) and MJ Byleveld last year.

The grey gelding by Foxwedge has made the Thukela Handicap his own since 2018, and trainer Candice Dawson told Turf Talk it’s not impossible that he’ll return for another defence of his title in 2021. She said: ‘Infamous Fox loves Greyville, and he comes to his best at this time of year. Durban July inclusion has evaded us, but the Thukela comes around every year and it’s a race that suits him so well. We weren’t aiming him specifically at last Sat-

urday’s renewal, but that’s the way things worked out. “He stumbled in the Summer Cup last year, ran be-low best and we put him away for three months. INFAMOUS FOX (fm p1) the day. “He’d been working exceptionally well after that so we decided to have another go at his favourite race and we were absolutely delighted. Everyone in the stable loves Infamous Fox, he is very dear to all our hearts and while his fan club had to stay at home this year, they were there in spirit. Kathryn (Ralphs) has a video clip of the gang shouting him home last Saturday, it is worth seeing!” Dawson said that the grooms at Summerveld love Infamous Fox almost as much as his home team. She said: “My Durban runners are stabled next to Paul Lafferty’s yard, there are always grooms around and about. They know who is visiting, they talk among themselves and they often have a bet, so they’ve already asked me if we could come back next year, because Infamous Fox brings them cash at good odds every year.” One has to wonder whether Kathryn, our now-and-then columnist and boyfriend Chris Santos got the cash too, being avid form students and avid travellers and so on. Ahead of the July, we at Turf Talk had been pleading for weeks for another column and she kept giving lame excuses. The suspicion is that Infamous Fox had been lined up for a strike, and they were travelling around bookmakers’ shops to take small individual bets to keep the price in check. That’s just a theory, though. Kathryn said that her grandfather, Derek Ralphs, and dad Lindsay were especially fond of the grey. “My grandpa was with my dad when he bought In-famous Fox at the Klawervlei Farm Sale. He liked him, said he was a superstar from the moment he saw him.” CK Racing had enjoyed success half an hour be-fore Infamous Fox’s win, when speedy filly Gallic Princess (Gavin Lerena) galloped her rivals dizzy in the eThekwini Sprint over 1200m, winning by 2.50-lengths. Gallic Princess, formerly owned by Philip Kahan and Anthony Joseph, was offered to Larry Nestadt after she’d won three races for Corne Spies and Nestadt liked the pedigree, saw potential and struck the deal, bringing in Gary Player as a partner. Gallic Princess looks like she has feature potential and Dawson said: “She’s fast, she won a very good race and the Mercury Sprint is a possibility for her, but we’ll have to consider where she draws before we make a decision.” - tt.

WALLS Of Dubrovnik (Eric Ngwane), with Mike and Rae Miller. (Candiese Lenferna).

Walls Of Durbrovnik hunts whopping PE bonus THE Mike Miller-trained Walls Of Dubrovnik will make an audacious last gasp attempt to land a R500,000 bonus by travelling down to Port Elizabeth to run in the Listed Champion Juvenile Cup over 1400m on the Fairview turf on Friday, writes DAVID THISELTON.

When the new Hemel ‘n Aarde stallion, Fencing Master, arrived in South Africa in 2016 stallion man-ager David Allan of David Allan Bloodlines announced a R1-million bonus to be potentially distributed among the three best two-year-olds conceived by this stallion in his first covering sea-son.

UK-based Colin Bird owns Fencing Master and Allan announced that in support of the British-bred stallion the owner, trainer and breeder of his three best black type two-year-olds conceived in 2016 would receive respective bonuses of R500,000, R300,000 and R200,000. On first interpretation it seems the money will be split between owner, trainer and breeder. Friday is officially the last day of the season, so the Champion Juvenile Cup has allowed the two-year-old colt an eleventh hour opportunity to land the bonus.

Walls Of Dubrovnik finished a strong-finishing third in the KZN Yearling Sale Million over 1300m at the Vodacom Durban July meeting on Saturday. Unfor-tunately, that race is Non-Black Type so did not qualify him for the bonus. That was his second run in the famous Gujadhur family colours. The Gujadhurs of Mauritius own one of the oldest racing stables in the world and are viewed virtually as royalty by the island’s passionate racing public. Walls Of Dubrovnik went within 1,4 lengths of claiming the R500,000 cheque on June 13 when finishing fourth in the Grade 3 Godolphin Barb Stakes over 1100m. He would have gained black type with a third-place finish. He was subsequently sold to the Gujadhurs. Mike Miller’s son and assistant, Sterling, said the colt had come out of his race on Saturday well. He added, “The 1400m is a bit of a stretch but he should get it if ridden correctly. On Saturday he came from near last to run third.” - Gold Circle.

THE National Yearling Sale’s Lot 3 is Gifted Gal, named as such probably because her sire Oratorio has proven to be gifted. She’s a late foal, November, but comes up early in the sale—a filly of contrasts therefore, an edge about this gal and Pippa Mickleburgh of Avontuur commented: “She’s a big strong girl, a good size for a November foal. It’s not always easy to sell a yearling that comes to the ring early, so make a note of this one so you don’t forget. She’s nice and correct, has the right attributes.” Gifted Gal is the fifth foal of Academia (Western Winter), who has already produced three winners from three runners and comes from the immediate family of stakes winners My Kazzie, Royal IQ and Mentor.

“ A misty start to the morning at Normandy Stud. The shapes of horses just visible. Is the next Sergeant Hardy, Bravura, Mother Russia or Winter Solstice out there?” tweeted Oscar Foulkes from the farm this morning.” Normandy will have two offerings on BSA’s online sale in August.
