The phone rings and you recognize the phone number. It is someone calling from church. What is your initial reaction? Do you say to yourself, “Oh no, now what do they want?” or do you immediately answer the call, eagerly awaiting to hear the voice of your pastor or your friendly church secretary?
Perhaps it all depends on the day and whatever cir-cumstances you are dealing with in your life. As one of your pastors, please know that first of all, we do
care about you and your relationship with the church and especially with Christ. If you are hurting or in need, we want to hear from you and pray with and for you. In the words I shared from 1 Peter, the writer’s Jewish audience is being reminded of their own heritage as God’s people. They have a place in God’s story that has nothing to do with their own strength and everything to do with God’s mercy. When they are reminded that they are a “chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people” it is for the purpose of building them up and giving them a secure sense of identity with God. These words are not meant to create a sense of arrogance or self-righteousness. They are simply words of truth and prom-ise.

priests for the purpose of proclaiming “the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” You see, when God calls us into this thing we call “the priesthood of all believers” it means we must actually do something! This is not about doing good works in or-der to be righteousness. (we call this “works righteous-ness”) but it is about God’s mercy being proclaimed to all the earth.
So, when the telephone rings and it’s the church, consider it an opportunity to be a part of this great “priesthood of all believers.” We all have our own unique gifts and talents to share with one another. According to page 52 of The Lu-theran Handbook for Pastors Martin Luther interpreted the concept of the priesthood of all believers to mean that “each Christian had priestly duties in both the church and the world. These duties include praying for each other, sharing God’s Word by talking about the life of faith, and forgiving one another.” This means that regardless of who you are and what gifts you may possess, you are a part of this church and what you do really does matter.
The choices we make every day regarding how we use our time and our resources reflect how we are living as this “priesthood”. Even if you hear this call to be a priest as a burden on your already busy schedules, consider how the Holy Spirit might be equipping and empowering you to serve.
One way for you to begin serving is by signing up for the Southwestern MN ELCA Synod “Equipping Congregations Day” on Saturday, February 20 in Willmar. You may find more information on this in this newsletter.

CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH Annual Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, January 20, 2016—recessed Reconvened—Sunday, January 24, 2016
The Annual Meeting of Christ Lutheran Church was held on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 after a 6:00 PM supper furnished by Fellowship and Service Work Group II.
Executive council members present were: Pastor Ted
Kunze, Pastor Dawn Quame, Gary Plotz, Theresa Nyset-vold, Cal Wurpts, Laurel Nel-son, Jessica Doeden, Mary Mesner, Greg Wasberg, and Sandy Stokesbary. Dawn Mouw, Office Manager, was present.
President Gary Plotz called the meeting to order at 6:45 PM. Pastor Dawn led opening worship liturgy and prayer. Pastor Ted shared a video greeting and annual report from Bishop Jon Anderson, SW MN Synod.
A motion to approve the agenda was made; M/S/P Lu-ther Onken/Gerald Hubbling. A motion to approve the sec-retary’s minutes of the previ-ous annual meeting, as
printed, was made; M/S/P Laurel Nelson/Jean Asplin.
Pastor Ted highlighted items from the Pastor’s Report on page 8 of the Annual Report. He expressed thank you and appreciation in the ministry partnership of this congrega-tion with Pastor Dawn and the members of Christ Lutheran. He encouraged involvement by all members, of all ages, and strengthening our stew-ardship in working toward mis-sion support goals. He intro-duced the Lenten theme, “The Abundant and Generous Life” and invited everyone to pick up a copy of the book “Your New Money Mindset”. The books are a gift of the Endow-ment Fund, the bookmarks made by Amy Nepp, and will be supportive to the Lenten theme.
Pastor Dawn highlighted items from the Pastor’s Report on page 9 of the Annual Report. She expressed appreciation of her colleague, Pastor Ted, and the staff of Christ Lu-theran. She feels it is a privi-

lege to be a Christ Lutheran Church pastor and to be able to share the love of Christ with each other.
The 2015 year-end financial report was presented by Cal Wurpts as printed in the An-nual report. Cal expressed appreciation for all the support from the congregation and a sincere thank you to Dawn Mouw, Office Manager, for all her excellent help. He noted the report shows some nega-tives with the failure to meet Mission Support goals for the year. We are encouraged to grow in stewardship and sup-port. Also, there are some positives to note; the mission investment loan was paid off in September 2015. The re-maining replacement windows have been ordered and will be installed as weather allows; the funds to pay for the win-dows is available. Cal noted we are off to a strong start in January 2016 and asked if there were questions. He ex-plained that various special fund raising and activities cause the reporting variances in the spreadsheet. There was a comment regarding the chart of giving in the Annual Report from the past five years; concern for the down-ward trend and how can we
increase the mission support. There was general good dis-cussion and encouragement to strive for “First Fruits Giv-ing”.
Jerry Moline raised a point of order that there is not a quo-rum present at the meeting. By Christ Lutheran Church constitution, a quorum is 40 members. A motion was made to recess the meeting until after worship on Sunday morning; M/S/P Theresa Nysetvold/Cal Wurpts.
The Annual Meeting of Christ Lutheran Church reconvened at 11:10 AM, Sunday, January 24, 2016. President Gary Plotz commented on the ac-tivities of the January 20th meeting, including agenda ap-proval, secretary’s report, and pastors’ reports. He asked if there were questions. A mo-tion to approve those previ-ously made reports; M/S/P Bette Meinerts/Greg Moberg.
Cal Wurpts reviewed the fi-nancial report and presented a printed review report for to-day’s meeting. He, again, noted the shortfall income for the Mission Support benevo-lence giving and encourages strong stewardship measures for the year. He suggested the use of special offering en-velopes each month to remind

members of the need. An un-designated gift from the Mavis Simonson estate has been received; the new council will need to discuss and designate the use. Again, the positive is the final payment has been made on the Mission Invest-ment loan and the remaining replacement windows have been ordered so that project will soon be completed. Cal asked if there any questions; there were none. A motion to approve the financial report was made; M/S/P Jerry Moline/Gerald Hubbling.
President Gary Plotz noted his President’s Report is on page 19 of the Annual Report and expressed appreciation to all for their time and talents.
Jon Hoyme, representing the Nominating Committee, pre-sented the slate of candidates and expressed appreciation to all who have agreed to serve on a committee or an office. Two positions need an addi-tional candidate: one member on the Stewardship Commit-tee (3 yr. term) and one mem-ber on the Worship & Evan-gelism Committee (3 yr. term).
President Gary appointed Marcia Kunze and Jean Asplin as tellers. President Gary called for any additional nomi-nations from the floor. Hear-
ing none, the ballot was voted; write-in nominations are wel-come. The vacant positions may be filled by council ap-pointment. 73 ballots were cast and the following nomi-nees were elected unani-mously.

Shetek Lutheran Ministries Representative: Jeff Erick-son
Cal Wurpts presented the pro-posed budget and noted that Shetek Lutheran Ministries has voted to discontinue the shared ministry with Christ Lutheran and Faith Lutheran Churches. This means that the two churches will have to pick up the approximately $7500 that SLM previously paid. Christ Lutheran’s share of that is approximately $5700 (75%). The pastors’ salaries reflect a 1.68% inflation in-crease, plus a step on the schedule, as suggested by Synod guidelines. Other
church staff received a 1.68% inflation adjustment to their wages. Cal commented that our membership is growing and an opportunity for growth in stewardship and worship attendance. He asked if there were any questions. A motion was made to approve the budget; M/S/P Jon Hoyme/Gerald Hubbling.
There was no Old Business and no New Business.
Pastor Ted and the members present expressed apprecia-tion to President Gary for his leadership, Sandy Stokes-bary, Cal Wurpts, Mary Ever-son, and outgoing board members. A brief meeting of the new executive board is to follow.
A motion to adjourn was made; M/S/P Betty Hughes/John Meyer.

our annual meeting, the congregation voted on the 2016 budget. The budgeted amount for general offerings breaks down to $21,634.78 each month to cover our an-ticipated ministry expenses. In addition we will need $1,982.02 each month for our Synod Mission Support.

Lenten Soup Suppers
During the season of Lent, Christ Lutheran Youth will be serving light soup suppers on Wednesday evenings prior to Lenten worship beginning February 17. All youth and their parents are asked to participate in these meals at least once during the season with serving, setting tables and cleaning up. If you have not yet been contacted about help-ing, please do so by contacting a member or the Youth Committee or the church office. Any money raised beyond the cost of expenses will help support future youth trips. Thank you.
Ash Wednesday Is February 10th
Join us for our first mid-week service as we begin the season of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is traditionally a day of repentance and you will have the opportunity to be marked with ashes as a sign of our hu-mility before God, and of our mortality. We will also celebrate Holy Communion--a reminder of God’s grace. Worship at Faith in Avoca will be at 5:30 PM that night (earlier than the other weeks), and 7:00 PM at Christ in Slayton.
Pastor-Parish Relations Committee
The Pastor-Parish Relations Committee for Faith and Christ will meet on Wednesday, February 3
rd at 8:00 PM in the
Chapel Lounge at Christ Lutheran. This committee meets approximately every 3 months to give our pastors support and feedback about the ministry of our congregations. If you have something that you would like brought up, please speak to either of our pastors or to one of the members of the Committee: From Faith--Daisy Pierson and Lexi Fran-sen; from Christ--Cal Wurpts, Keith Rossow, Brenda Loos-brock, and Kari Mathiowetz.

“The Abundant And Generous Life”
Jesus said, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” --John 10:10
Our mid-week services will look at what this “abundant life” from Jesus entails, and what gets in our way of enjoying it.
We’ll also consider thoughts from the book, Your New Money Mindset by Brad Hewitt and James Moline. These authors look at attitudes towards money in light of our Christian faith. As the authors put it, “God invites all of us to live in a new money mindset, to recognize that we have enough for ourselves and enough to share…But that new mindset doesn’t come automatically” (p. 31).
Copies of this book will be available free of charge at the church so that you may read it with us. Thank you to Arlyn Stokesbary who got us a good deal on these books through Thrivent Financial, and to Christ Lutheran’s Endowment Fund for picking up the cost. Try the “New Money Mindset Assessment” on page 50--very thought-provoking!

“Equipping Day” February 20
Our Southwestern Minnesota Synod invites lay people and pastors from throughout the Synod to the annual “Equipping Congregations Day” workshop on Saturday, February 20, 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM at Vinje and Bethel Lutheran Churches in Willmar. The theme will be “Spirit-Led Innovation in an Uncertain Age.” In addition to a keynote address there will be over 30 workshops available from which to choose. We would love to have a group from Christ Lutheran attend. If you are interested, please contact the church office. Leadership Retreat February 21 All congregational officers and all people serving on our various ministry boards are urged to attend our annual “retreat” on Sunday, February 21, starting at 1:30 PM in the Chapel Lounge. It’s an important time for getting ac-quainted with one another, getting oriented to how the boards undergird our ministry at Christ Lutheran, and set-ting some goals for the year. The Congregation Council--our officers and a representative from each Ministry Board--will have the February meeting starting about 2:45 PM. Please plan to attend as we get the new year off to a good start!

w.a.L.k. Youth are “on a roll” during Lent!
The after school program (w.a.L.k.) at Christ Lutheran will not be meeting during the season of Lent. We will resume on Wednesday, March 30 with a special visit from Dana Isaacson of Shetek Lutheran Ministries. She will lead us in some great camp games and a lesson related to this sum-mer’s theme, “The Jesus Way”.
While we are on break however, we will be collecting money in special banks made out of empty toilet paper rolls. All money raised will be used to purchase toilet paper for the Murray County Food Shelf. Addi-tional banks are available in the church lobby.
Weather Policy
When school is let out early because of stormy weather, we will automatically cancel after-school and evening events that night. We will rarely (almost never?) cancel Sunday morning worship, as people appreciate the radio broadcast even more in stormy weather. Sunday School may be cancelled, however, as may Saturday evening worship. Listen to KJOE Radio for news of storm-related cancellations, or check the “Slayton Christ Lutheran Church” Facebook page. Always, of course, use your own judgment about whether or not it is safe to go out on stormy days.

Southwestern MN Senior High Youth Gathering
Friday, March 4 – Saturday, March 5 in Mankato, MN. The theme is, “You are the light of the World”, based on Matthew 5:14 In the past year, sev-eral youth have expressed interest in this event, but, at this time, no youth from Christ or Faith Lutheran Churches have actually signed up. Late registration begins February 2 and will close on February 15 and re-quires an additional $10 non-refundable late fee per person. Cost (before February 1, 2016): $95 – in-cludes hotel room, programming, t-shirt and two meals.
The gathering this year will feature music and other lead-ership from AGAPE (Dave Scherer) as well as “Nightlife” with a variety of options, The Spirit Garage, intentional small groups and of course there will be plenty of wor-ship, mass gatherings, dancing and faith and relation-ship building.

The Magic Of 4 Seconds Have you ever had a friend walk past you and say noth-ing? You then may wonder “What did I do wrong?’ How about someone saying to you, ”Hi, good to see you!” Those comments probably lifted your spirits. Both of these actions took only 4 SECONDS, but the impact was very different. What we do or say in 4 SECONDS can make a huge dif-ference in a relationship. What do you do for the first 4 SECONDS when you come home? Do you say “ Hi, how was your day? How did your meeting go? You were great at that game tonight! My it smells good in here!” OR do you pick up the paper, look at the mail, turn on the TV and ignore whoever is in the house? Both actions take only 4 SECONDS!
If you live alone and feel lonely, pick up the phone. Invite someone for coffee, a movie or a walk. Chances are IN 4 SECONDS you will have helped someone else’s loneliness as well. What we do in 4 SECONDS matters to those around us. We can choose to ignore someone in church while we look for a friend or we can be welcoming. ‘Good morning! You look nice. Valentine’s Day is right around the corner!
Consider honoring someone special this year on Valen-tine’s Day by supporting ELCA World Hunger. Christ Lu-theran’s after school program (w.a.L.k.) is providing oppor-tunities to purchase ELCA Good Gifts grams in honor of your friend, child or significant other to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
Colored Valentine pictures can be found hanging outside the church office with attached envelopes. Please select a picture that you may keep and place your donation to ELCA World Hunger in the envelope. Fill out the front of the enve-lope with the name and address of the person you wish to honor and leave it in the church office or place it in the offering plate. Checks can be made out to Christ Lutheran Church with “World Hunger” in the memo.
A special ELCA Good Gifts gram will be sent to the person you are honor-ing that tells them about the gift given in their honor. Money raised will benefit ELCA World Hunger and help provide families in need with fruit-tree seedlings, honeybees, fish and other animals, and the resources they need to escape hunger and poverty for good.

Sunday School Offering The mission project supported with our Sunday School of-fering changed with the new year. In the fall we raised $426.13 to buy milk for The Banquet in Sioux Falls. This spring we will give to help defray the cost of diapers for homeless children in Minneapolis. People Serving People is the largest family-focused homeless shelter in Minnesota, averaging 348 guests per night (59% under the age of 18). Located near the new football stadium, People Serving People provides basic needs and comprehensive support services to help families return to stability. They go through approximately 4,000 diapers every week for families stay-ing with them. For more information, visit www.peopleservingpeople.org

Yarn & Yak—the first Saturday of each month
at 9:00 am in the Chapel Lounge. This is a time to visit, share ideas, and learn from each other as we work on prayer shawls, baby hats, or other items. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Bring your projects!
Birthday Bags—Murray County Food Shelf is in
need of Birthday Bags. The bags contain a cake mix, a can of frosting, candles, balloons, and birthday plates and napkins. All donations can be placed in the birth-day shopping cart just inside the church doors.
