THE SATURDAY EVENING POST 71

"LOVE" by Robert Indiana. The six foot square canvas is in the permanent collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

RY3W p MING 117 Robert Indiana, the painter of this joy-

ously dynamic proclamation, defines him-self as an "American painter of signs, charting the course. . .not an internation-alist speaking some glib Esperanto; pos-sibly I intend to be a Yankee."

Indiana's bright, assertive American her-aldry is completely opposed to still pres-tigious Abstract Expressionism, for he produces a strict and centric geometry of circles, polygons and letters in bright and bold colors.

Robert Indiana was born in New Castle, Indiana, in 1928. His formal art training began in Indianapolis and continued through travels to Alaska, Maine, Scot-land and Europe, finally ending in New York.

In 1961 his work, The American Dream, was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art. He was then quite near to his discovery of the art form of our times, LOVE, symbolizing unity, purity and communion.
