This year’s Hygienists’ Day at the Legislature is Tuesday, April 10th and will be held at the State Capital Building. The LDHA invites all RDHs who can come to attend. This is your opportunity to educate your legislators about your profession. Come and join members of your association as we host a display, talk with elected officials, and bring awareness to issues affecting Louisiana’s dental professionals. The Louisiana State Board of Dentistry has approved this event for non-clinical CE Hours. For more information, please check our website at www.LDHA.org .

An Addition to the Fluoride Arsenal By Joanna Peters RDH, BA, BS - LDHA President
Silver Diamine Fluoride 38% (SDF) has been shown to be effective for treatment of dentinal hypersensitivity, as well as arresting caries. 3 In clinical trials, SDF applied directly to a cavitated lesion outperformed fluoride varnish for the non-surgical arrest of caries in children and older adults. 2 SDF has a dual mechanism of action resulting from the combination of its ingredients. The silver component acts as an anti-microbial agent killing bacteria and preventing the formation of new biofilm, while the fluoride acts to prevent further demineralization of tooth structure. 1
In a study conducted in China, 375 children with dentin caries were assigned to five groups. The results demonstrated that patients receiving no fluoride treatment developed more carious lesions than those receiving either NaF or SDF. The children who received the 38% SDF once a year had more arrested caries and fewer new caries than children who received the NaF every 3 months. 1
When adding SDF to your Fluoride arsenal, there a few dos and don’ts to be aware of. The dos include educating your patients that SDF will stain carious tooth structure a dark brown or black color. Be sure to obtain an Informed Consent before applying. Another is that although the product is odorless/colorless until applied, it will stain skin, clothing, countertops, flooring, etc. thus precaution and isolation are necessary when applying. Research supports multiple treatments, and caries arrest shouldn’t be expected with a single treatment. The standard regimen is two applications applied at weekly intervals 3 After application, instruct your patient to not eat or drink for one hour. 1
The don’ts of SDF include not using this material if your patient is allergic to silver. Also avoid if there are oral ulcerations. SDF is not to be used in the same manner as fluoride varnish as it can stain many defects in tooth structure and restorative margins. 3 Teeth with evidence of pulpitis or pulpal necrosis are not appropriate for SDF treatment and require surgical treatment. 2 SDF should not be applied when restorative procedures are placed as it may impact adhesion. 3
The application of SDF is considered to be a low cost and effective measure that prevents caries initiation and arrests disease progression in primary and permanent teeth. The cost per patient is estimated at $0.40 + application supplies and requires less than 10 minutes of salary time. 1
Staining of the carious lesion is its biggest drawback especially if the lesion is in a cosmetic area. Educating the patient on the positives of SDF should outweigh cosmetic concerns. At each Annual Session, in March, we vote for members to join our Board of Trustees (BOT). If you
are interested in learning more about becoming an officer on the Board, please email the LDHA

their duties. and the only prerequisite i s to be an ADHA member and put your name on the ballot!

talk to someone at Annual Session and be added to the ballot at that time. We are always looking
for volunteers wanting to help make our state’s hygiene association great!

NEWS FROM THE ADHA
• DE L E G A T E RE P O R T 2017 • As senior delegate for Louisiana, I was fortunate to attend the 2017 ADHA Annual Session in Jacksonville, Florida in June. ADHA Annual Session consisted not only of CE courses, but also a Crest & Oral-B General Session meeting featuring Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernandez, an Advocacy Update, Constituent and Component Leadership Workshops, and the House of Delegates. Before diving into the business meetings, the weekend started off with a motivating speech by Olympic Gold Medalist Laurie Hernandez. Laurie was recently named a Crest & Oral-B ambassador by Procter & Gamble. She discussed how her mom taught her to have a “never give up” attitude which led to her winning gold and silver medals, winning Dancing with the Stars, and writing her first book, “I Got This: To Gold and Beyond.” Laurie is truly an inspiration and a wonderful ambassador to have representing Crest & Oral-B. The advocacy update was in response to ADHA’s recent visit to the US Dept. of Labor. The Wage & Hour Division is responsible for administering and enforcing worker protection laws. A Community Outreach & Resource Planning Specialist from this division, Roy Richardson, presented insight on workplace issues and the services of the Wage & Hour Division. This link provides some great knowledge for dental hygienists! https://www.facebook.com/dentaldirections/videos/1430673053666597/ The Constituent and Component Leadership Workshops were led by Cynthia D’Amour, a leadership strategist, who helped association leaders and constituents get more members engaged. We participated in several interactive sessions designed to support meaningful member experiences at the state and local levels. We also learned more about the new Guide to the Constituent Charter Agreement which helped clarify and simplify the charter related work of states. The ADHA House of Delegates is proposed with the task of discussing and voting on the language of the bylaws to keep them current in our ever-growing profession. Delegates from each state came together to discuss and vote on 8 proposed resolutions and 2 proposed bylaws. At the time of ADHA Annual Session, our Junior Delegate, Danielle Victoriano was chosen to be on a Reference Committee Chair Panel. She has since become our District VI Representative! Congrats to her on all of her accomplishments! I thoroughly enjoyed my time at ADHA Annual Session and getting to know my fellow constituent and district VI delegates as well as delegates from around the country!
