Th ink Big, Act Small - Succeeding as an Entrepreneurial BankJe RendelHow do you take a multi-billion dollar idea and make it work at a non multi-billion dollar bank? What makes a select group of right-sized, entrepreneurial companies turn value into profi t, focus on growth, and lead in their respective markets? How do they distinguish their factors for success, let others compete on price, and thrive - regardless of squeezed margins, daunting competition, regulatory cost pressure, and chaotic uncertainty. More important, how do they uphold and enrich an agile, entrepreneurial mindset that allows them to act on opportunities, execute right away, and steer clear of the competitive liability of mediocrity? In understanding and applying the well-defi ned attributes these companies and banks have refi ned, your bank can do much more than hope to keep up with your competition and survive the “Bigger is Always Better” argu-ment. Your right-sized, entrepreneurial bank can strategically and coop-eratively fi nd solutions and pursue opportunities to better your customers’ fi nancial well-being - and your bank’s growth, innovation and prosperity. When your customers win fi rst, your bank wins every time.

Session One (Lafayette Ballroom) Best Practices for Bank Boards

Peter Weinstock, Hunton & WilliamsBank directors are confronted with confl icting agendas from their various constituencies. Bank regulators expect boards to set a risk appetite and oversee risk management. In addition, regulators expect directors to ques-tion, challenge and, if need be, oppose managerial decisions that involve too much risk. Now that the economic downturn is considered to be at an end, shareholders are pushing banks for higher returns. Shareholder activ-ism has trickled down to community banks. Both regulatory authorities and shareholders are demanding more transparency and communication - not just from bank management, but from independent directors. So, how can boards meet these sometimes confl icting challenges? This presentation will discuss how the role of the board should evolve to address these risks and industry developments

Th e Innovation Question: What, How & Why Now?Lee Wetherington, Jack Henry & Associations, Inc. The public perceives fi nancial institutions as “laggards in innovation.” No wonder. As regulated, risk-averse entities, fi nancial institutions aren’t inclined to ‘fail fast and often’ as innovation requires. Moreover, many fi nancial institutions dedicate their most skilled talent to complying with regulations rather than pioneering better user experiences and service. Even innovation ain’t what it used to be. Innovation today requires more than successful execution of product strategy and delivery; it requires successful management of ecosystems of vendors, partners, and regulators. Join Lee Wetherington for a sobering look at what it takes to innovate success-fully in fi nancial services, and learn what you need to know to assess risk accurately, focus resources smartly, and increase your fi nancial institution’s probability of success in the new era.
