THE SCHOOL HYMN
OUR Father, by whose servants
Our house was built of old.
Whose hand hath crowned her children
With blessings manifold.
For thine unfailing merciesFar strewn along our way,
With all who passed before us,
We praise thy name today.
Five hundred years enduring,
From age to following age,
A hundred generations
Have built our heritage:
Their names are long forgotten.
Long spent their hopes and fears:
Safe rest they in thy keeping,
Who changes! not with years.
They reap not where they laboured.
We reap what they have sown;
Our harvest may be garnered
By ages yet unknown.
The days of old have dowered usWith gifts beyond all praise:
Our Father, make us faithful
To serve the coming days.
Before us and beside us.
Still holden in thine hand,
A cloud unseen of witness,
Our elder comrades stand:
One family unbroken.
We join, with one acclaim,
One heart, one voice uplifting.
To glorify thy Name.G. W. BRIGGS (O.L.)
OUR FOUNDER
Thomas Burton, the Town's greatest benefactor, died in 1496, and lies buried in theParish Church. The Report of Henry VIII 's Commissioners mentions a Chantry"ffounded by Thomas Burton for one Preste to celebrate Dyvyne Service w'then the pishChurch of Loughboroughe." and says that the office was then void.
In 1495 Burton conveyed his lands to trustees by deed, but without mention of thetrust. But in 1597, when new trustees were appointed, the upkeep of the School was oneof the objects mentioned. The inscription on the Burton Table in the Parish Church is asfollows:-
