Course Description Algebra 1 incorporates concepts and skills necessary for students to pursue the study of mathematics. The arithmetic properties of numbers are extended to include the development of the real number system. The fundamental concepts of equality, functions, multiple representations, and data analysis guide the activities that allow students to enhance problem solving skills. The foundation of this course will be to assist the students in the development of their mathematical reasoning skills. This will be developed through problem solving, communication (oral and written), the creation of connections between concepts within the course and content from other courses, and creating mathematical representations.

GRADING

Quarter Grade - Each quarter grade will be determined by dividing total points earned by total points possible. In a quarter student can expect to complete the following assignments and assessments.

Prior to completing each Weekly Review and Assessment, the students will be expected to complete a formal formative assessment. The formal formative assessments will be entered into the grade book on StudentVUE/ParentVUE, but will be marked as “not for grading” and will not calculate into the students’ grades. The purpose of the formal formative assessments are to provide students feedback and opportunity to show mastery of the material.

In addition, students will be eligible to retake any Assessment (excluding Weekly Reviews) if they score below 80%. The better of the two scores will be entered into the grade book with a cap of 80%. Students have one week to complete a retake after completing and receiving feedback on the original Assessment.

All assessments will be completed asynchronously.

Semester Grade – Average of two quarters.

Final Grade – Average of the two semesters.

Extra Credit – Extra Credit will not be offered.

Academic Integrity

Each assessment should reflect the knowledge and skills of the student and only the student. Students should always follow the Briar Woods High School Honor Code:

“On My Honor, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this assessment.”

Calculators are permitted for use on all assignments and assessments unless indicated otherwise.
