Lotto NRFL 2015 Welcome

The FIFA U-20 World Cup may be dominating the headlines but there is still a wealth of local action taking place to supplement your appreciation of the globe’s best young talent. The Lotto NRFL took a break last week as the World Cup kicked off in Auckland but returns this weekend with a full schedule of excitement and drama in store. With the season now having reached the halfway point, the intensity of the play will ramp up even further over the coming weeks and the title is still very much up for grabs in each division. The respective leaders hold only a slim advantage and it’s just as tight at the other end of most divisions where a host of teams are battling it out to retain their status. In the programme this week, we preview Round 12 of the Premier League, Round 11 of Di-visions One and Two, and Round 10 of the Women’s Premier, as well as featuring photos from Phototek of several recent matches. As always, we also have all the up-to-date league tables, graphs, golden boot charts and squads so there is a wealth of info at your fingertips!

Our Lotto NRFL social media platforms continue to be the place to go for all score updates, results, goal details and other news – be sure to tag us @LottoNRFL with your updates from the sideline!

Programme 2015

Waitakere City vs Eastern Suburbs

Fred Taylor Park | Saturday 6 June | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mazhar Batoor Assistant Referees: Hayden Tutbury, Torres Chang

Waitakere’s poor form carried over into the Chatham Cup with a humbling loss at Division One Waiuku and they will be desperate to start salvaging something from a season that is rapidly going from bad to worse. In contrast, Suburbs are riding high in the league and are fresh from a 4-1 win over Western Springs in the cup so the odds are stacked in their favour here.

Central United vs Bay Olympic Kiwitea Street | Saturday 6 June | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Robert Nieuwenhuis Assistant Referees: Glen Lochrie, Pat Barrett

These sides experienced contrasting fortunes in the cup last weekend, Central pulling off an excellent result with a 3-0 win over Premier League leaders Glenfield while Bay Olympic suffered a 5-1 thumping at Onehunga Sports. The Bay are breathing down the neck of fourth-placed Central and an away win would draw the pair level on points.

Glenfield Rovers vs Western Springs McFetridge Park | Saturday 6 June | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Martin Neale Assistant Referees: Allan Wilson, Nick Kang

It will be interesting to see how the Glenfield players begin this match as they had to contend with their first defeat of the season last weekend. Coach Danny Donegan will be after a positive reaction and his side should have too much class for Springs, who were turfed out of the cup by Suburbs. But the visitors have won three league matches on the trot so, despite their cup disappointment, are on a good streak.

Birkenhead United vs Three Kings United

Shepherds Park | Saturday 6 June | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Cory Mills Assistant Referees: James Ashford, John Bennett

After bright starts to the season, these sides are both now in mid-table and are facing an uphill battle to get back into the top placings. This is therefore an important fixture as failure to win would leave the vanquished side some way off the pace. The teams put on a thrilling show last season as Birkenhead claimed a 3-2 win while the memories of a 4-0 home defeat will also be fresh for Three Kings.

Onehunga Sports vs East Coast Bays

Waikaraka Park | Saturday 6 June | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mark Owens Assistant Referees: Ravinesh Kumar, Nadia Browning

Both sides are in good goal scoring form after big wins in the cup and the nature of those triumphs will have provided a timely confidence boost as the league campaigns have not quite been going to plan for either. Wins have proved hard to come by with Sports notching just four and Bays earning three. Onehunga have an excellent defensive record – bettered only by leaders Glenfield – so Bays will not find it easy to break through.

Melville United vs Hamilton Wanderers Postponed due to FIFA U-20 World Cup

Lotto NRFL Premier Preview Round 12

Fencibles United vs Western Springs

William Green Domain | Friday 5 June | Kick-off: 7pm | Referee: John McCoskrie Assistant Referees: Len Gattsche, Jesse Dale

It can’t really get much worse for Fencibles at the moment as they are propping up the table and had several scoops of salt rubbed into that wound with a 15-0 loss to Glenfield in the cup last weekend. They might have hoped for an easier way to recover from that humiliation than a visit by one of the title contenders, especially as Springs have just proven their class with a win over Claudelands in the cup, the second time they have defeated the league leaders this season.

Glenfield Rovers vs Lynn-Avon United McFetridge Park | Sunday 7 June | Kick-off: 11am | Referee: Neil Tobin Assistant Referees: Hilary Osborne, Ravi Prasad

After hearing of Glenfield’s demolition job on Fencibles, the Lynn-Avon players will have had a few sleepless nights this week and will be desperate to avoid a similar fate. They will know a win is unlikely but will be keen to emerge with their honour intact and a resilient defensive showing is therefore required. Katie Rood is virtually a constant presence on the Glenfield score sheet but she was even more prolific than usual against Fencibles, finding the net a remarkable eight times.

Forrest Hill-Milford United vs Three Kings United Becroft Park | Sunday 7 June | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Mazhar Batoor Assistant Referees: Faiyaz Ali, Salman Ali

It’s a case of second time lucky here as these sides were due to meet in the cup last weekend before being denied that opportunity by a waterlogged pitch. Having prepared to face the same opposition for two weeks, both teams should go into this match with a very clear game plan and will need to carry out those directions with precision as this should be a tight one. Forrest Hill will be slight favourites but a winner is difficult to pick as the hosts have only a marginally better record than Three Kings.

Claudelands Rovers vs Norwest United

Galloway Park | Sunday 7 June | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Sean Coon Assistant Referees: Hubert Bakx, Yannick Bakx

Claudelands now have only one piece of silverware to aim for after dropping out of the cup so will be even more determined to finish what they’ve started in the league. On paper, this is a mismatch of large proportions, especially as Norwest have not fared well against the division’s heavyweights so far. They have conceded more goals than any other side which does not bode well against an opponent averaging over four goals per game.

Eastern Suburbs vs Papatoetoe

Madills Farm | Sunday 7 June | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: James Ashford Assistant Referees: Allan Tobin, Len Gattsche

The Papatoetoe defence could be busy here as Suburbs are in great form going forward, having scored 13 goals in their previous two matches – 4-1 over Norwest in the league and 9-0 against Papakura in the cup. Most of the damage has been done by just a handful of players with Grace Jale notching six at Papakura and Deven Jackson, Jade Parris and Jacqui Hand all scoring doubles in one of those games.

Programme 2015

Mt Albert-Ponsonby vs Mangere United

Anderson Park | Friday 5 June | Kick-off: 7pm | Referee: Vaughan Couillault Assistant Referees: Pat Barrett, John Bennett

Mangere’s reputation as one of the NRFL’s great entertainers continued in the cup with a 7-3 success over Te Puke and Mt Albert therefore have reason to be fearful, especially as they are at a low ebb after succumbing 3-0 at second division Oratia. To have any hope of winning the game the hosts must look to stifle Mangere’s rampant attack, which is equal with leaders North Shore as the best in the division.

Metro vs Forrest Hill-Milford United Phyllis Street | Friday 5 June | Kick-off: 7.30pm | Referee: Robert Nieuwenhuis Assistant Referees: Ben Hill, Khalid El Gana

Metro were not involved in last weekend’s cup action so should be full of energy while Forrest Hill will also have plenty left in the tank after cruising to a 3-0 win over Albany. Metro may have home advantage but it appears as if that will count for little as they have won just one of their five matches at Phyllis Street. That record and Forrest Hill’s lofty position on the table makes the visitors the favourites.

North Shore United vs Waiuku Allen Hill Stadium | Saturday 6 June | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Steven Black Assistant Referees: Kevin Turnock, Jeremy Ferguson

Both these sides hinted they may have the quality to compete at a higher level by rolling Premier League opposition in the cup, Shore accounting for Hamilton Wanderers 1-0 and Waiuku edging Waitakere City 4-3. Shore are in line to play the likes of Wanderers every week next season as they are in the box seat for promotion and it would take another huge effort for Waiuku to take anything back over the bridge.

Manurewa vs Takapuna

Memorial Park | Saturday 6 June | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Ben Norman Assistant Referees: Michael Dickason, William White

Takapuna were another team to fall at the hands of more lowly-ranked opposition in the cup after allowing second division title-chasers Papakura to put six past them at home. Fresh from a weekend off, Manurewa will look to repeat the feat of their fellow south Aucklanders but don’t appear capable of such a goal rampage, having scored just seven in their nine matches. The points here will be vital as both sides look to be facing a relegation battle.

Hibiscus Coast vs Ellerslie

Stanmore Bay Park | Saturday 6 June | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Rajesh Kumar Assistant Referees: Tony Wall, Dmitriy Sabitov

The atmosphere at Stanmore Bay will not have been great this week after the Coasters suffered the embarrassment of being knocked out of the cup by non-league Waitemata. Their sole goal in that match was scored by Trent Mayes and, as the division’s golden boot leader, his strikes appear to be the vehicle that can lead them to promotion. But Ellerslie also have the same aim in mind and the outcome here could be significant in the fight to go up.

Tauranga City United vs Ngaruawahia United Postponed due to FIFA U-20 World Cup

Lotto NRFL Division 1 Preview Round 12

Papatoetoe vs Lynn-Avon United

Murdoch Park | Saturday 6 June | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Brett Willis Assistant Referees: Andrew Lamberth, Aiden Moffatt

With both sides struggling at the wrong end of the table, this is a match that will have big consequences in the battle to avoid the drop. Neither team was in action last weekend so have had plenty of time to plot their approach to this vital encounter. Both are leaking goals at an average of over two per game but neither is scoring enough so it could be an open game with plenty of chances going begging.

Oratia United vs Onehunga Mangere United Parrs Park | Saturday 6 June | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Paul Shakes Assistant Referees: Gordon Campbell, Wendy McNeely

Oratia remain on track for an unlikely double after upsetting first division Mt Albert in the cup but the shoe will be back on the other foot this week for a match they are very much expected to win. The Onehunga Mangere camp does not appear settled at the moment with results not going their way and coach Mark O’Donnell having departed last week.

Fencibles United vs North Force

Riverhills Park | Saturday 6 June | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Chris Casey Assistant Referees: Vaughan Couillault, Neil Tobin

These two are both part of a log-jam of sides tucked behind the leading trio and a win here would therefore be significant as it could put some daylight between themselves and mid-table mediocrity, as well as keeping the pressure on the top three. The majority of North Force’s points have been earned at home – they have lost their last three away matches – so the smart money would be on a Fencibles win.

Te Atatu vs Manukau City

Te Atatu Peninsula Park | Saturday 6 June | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Carl Watkins Assistant Referees: Matt Norton, Peter Caffell

These sides will be well acquainted with each other after fighting for last season’s AFF/NFF Conference title, a battle eventually won by Te Atatu. Despite missing out on the trophy, it’s Manukau who have made a bigger impact at NRFL level however, sitting in second spot after losing just twice. Sixth-placed Te Atatu have also lost on only two occasions but have drawn nearly half of their matches and, if they can start turning those into wins, could be dark horses for promotion.

Papakura City vs Albany United

McLennan Park | Saturday 6 June | Kick-off: 5pm | Referee: Avnit Maharaj Assistant Referees: Peter Lamb, Mark Fleming

This is a hefty trek for Albany and, ominously for them, it would appear they are not likely to return north with much to show for their efforts. Papakura are leading the way in first place and, with goal machine Harry Hillary-Jenkins now back to partner the equally prolific Valerio Nawatu up front, the division’s highest-scoring side is going to be even more potent. All that spells bad news for lower mid-table Albany.
