CHARITY SPOTLIGHT

Friends of Foster Children (FOFC) members have been making dreams come true for local foster children since 1976. This small group of volunteers works year-round to provide living in residential treatment centers (group homes) and to newly-emancipated foster youth.

“Thank you for giving us the money for bowling and dinner. I really liked it. You made are hearts feel like some one cares for us.”The Foster Caring Committee funds thousands of dollars worth of requests each month for outings and enrichment

“FOFC believed in me when I sometimes didn’t believe in myself. They are like that one person in your life who doesn’t want to see you fail...” (Beverly)The Scholarship/Emancipation Committee provided more than 40 educational scholarships this past year to emancipated foster youth enrolled in community colleges and universities. They also helped eleven (11) emancipated youth furnish their crises.

“I wanted to THANK YOU SO MUCH for the school supplies!!! I am really excited for school to start this year…” (Corri)The Special Friends Committee carried out special projects of school supplies to approximately 350 children. They !

Committee members distributed beach towels and sunscreen for summer ! camp. They hosted a monthly Bingo Night for the boys at one && another.

“In many different ways, FOFC has helped to make dreams come true for children who, somewhere in their young lives, have stopped dreaming. Filling the wishes of children is what FOFC does best.” (Hillsides)'*'+%, 2 8:::during the 2010 holiday season which were distributed to 10 local facilities serving foster children and emancipated foster youth. More than 450 individual children had their Christmas , 2 < coming year.

“We have been able to provide our children with items that our budget just cannot support…In these tough economic times, we are very grateful to have the support of FOFC!” (Rosemary: Children’s Services)And Friends of Foster Children is grateful to have the support of our many friends in the community, including the generous employees and retirees of LADWP. Thank you all for helping us improve the lives of local foster children!

1. For this crafty little decoration, first trace

around the end of a toilet paper tube onto a

piece of green craft foam.

2. Wee Leprechaun - Step 2 Draw a 2 1/2-inch

circle around the first circle, then cut them

both out to create a hat top and brim and set

them aside.

3. Wee Leprechaun - Step 3 Next, using acrylic

paints, paint the paper tube green. Add a

skin-tone face and hands, plus rosy cheeks,

as well as a band of brown paint around the

back for hair.

4. Once the paint has dried, use a permanent marker to draw on

facial and clothing details, then use tacky glue to stick on 3

coiled brown pipe cleaners: 2 in the back for hair and 1 around

the face for a beard. For feet, fold another pipe cleaner in half,

then tightly coil and pinch the ends, as shown.

5. Place the folded pipe cleaner inside the tube and glue the feet

to the edge. Glue on the hat top and brim and a 5 1/2- by 1/2-

inch strip of craft foam for arms.

6. Finally, glue a decorative button to the hat brim.

LAWP EMPLOYEES’ 25ASSOCIATION REPORT

KNOW YOUR EMPLOYEES’ ASSOCIATION

DOWNED WORKERS PROGRAMYour Los Angeles Water and Power Employees’ Association has introduced a new component of its assistance programs. As it has done since the early 1930’s, your Water & Power Employees’ Association added the Downed Workers Program to complement the benefits offered by the Department and Local 18.

The new Downed Workers Program will assist family members of Department employee that requires hospitalization after sustaining work related injuries. We know that having loved ones nearby helps recovery, and eases stress during these difficult times. This program provides instant monetary disbursements for the cost of family member transportation, housing, food, and other miscellaneous expenses incurred while attending to, or visiting the injured employee, with no expectation of repayment. Upon release from the hospital, a recovering employee may seek assistance from our other programs, such as, medical equipment grants and emergency loans.

We thank the Power System for conceiving this program and introducing it to the Employees’ Association Board of Directors in early 2009. Representatives of the Power Safety & Training Group also met with our Board on several occasions to develop program guidelines. In November 2009, the Employees’ Association Board approved the guidelines and allocated funding for program establishment. In March 2010 program introduction began at quarterly Safety meetings and in New Employee Orientations. The response was immediate, and employees generously contributed to the Donors’ Welfare Plan.

The new Downed Workers Program fulfills our stated mission of providing assistance to employees and their families. We should be proud to have programs that help our fellow employees and the community during difficult times. Remember, all assistance programs rely on Donors’ Welfare Plan funding, so we seek your support in promoting this program and encouraging employees to contribute.

On August 24, 2010, there was an incident in an underground electrical vault where two employees were injured from

physical contact with a high voltage conductor. The employees were transported to area hospitals and the Power System

Safety Representatives (PSST) contacted an Employees’ Association Representative to open an immediate dialog to

communicate the possible needs of the families affected by this incident.

The Safety Representatives have remained the liaison between the family’s needs and the Employees’ Association, to ensure

the family’s needs are being met.

While the employees were hospitalized, the families were offered Food, Lodging, and Transportation. The monetary support

was available, and a hotel room was secured near the hospital for one of the employees’ family.

This was the first time the Downed Worker Program was utilized and there were many lessons learned through the process.

Power System Safety and the Employees’ Association will be meeting soon to discuss the lessons learned from this first event

and identify areas where we may be able to streamline the assistance programs so that they can work smoothly with the new

program. Our goal is to support the families of injured employees immediately following an incident and provide the needed

assistance so these families may have some peace of mind and focus solely on their loved ones recovery.
