TV: SNLA | Radio: AM 570/KTNQ 1020 AM
JUST NEED ONE!: The Dodgers tonight begin a four-game series
against the second-place San Francisco Giants and need just one
victory over their rivals to win the National League West and secure a
postseason date with the New York Mets. The road trip (0-3) started
poorly for Los Angeles as the Dodgers were swept in three games in
Colorado for the first time since 2007. Following the day game on
Thursday, Los Angeles heads home to wrap up the regular season this
weekend against the San Diego Padres.
The Dodgers’ magic number remains at just two to clinch
their third consecutive NL West title and reach the
postseason for the third year in a row, a feat that has never
been accomplished in franchise history. A victory by the
Dodgers tonight over the Giants would give the club its
sixth postseason berth in the last 10 years.
Los Angeles is looking to capture its 14th NL West division
title and to play “October Baseball” for the 29th time (20
th in
Los Angeles) in franchise history.
Despite dropping seven of 10 games, Los Angeles has the
NL’s second-best record since Aug. 25, going 20-12 (.625),
trailing just the Mets (21-11, .656). Those Mets lead the
Dodgers by 1.5 games for the No. 2 seed in the National
League playoffs.
The Dodgers are 0-6 at AT&T Park this season and their six
consecutive losses mark the club’s longest losing streak in
San Francisco since June 1-Sept. 13, 1972, when they
dropped six in a row at Candlestick Park. The club last lost
seven consecutive games in San Francisco from June 12,
1961-April 16, 1962, when they dropped a franchise-worst
nine in a row to the Giants on the road. The Dodgers have
scored just six runs in the six games in San Francisco this
season.
Earlier today, the Dodgers reinstated infielder/outfielder
Kiké Hernandez from the 15-day disabled list (left
hamstring strain). Los Angeles has 38 players on its roster.
HOT ROOK: Corey Seager has reached base safely in all 19 of his
big league starts (16 at shortstop), which is the longest such streak to
begin a career in Los Angeles Dodgers history:
LA Dodgers, Most Consec Starts Reaching Base to Start Career
Corey Seager 19 09/03/2015 - Current
Bill Russell 15 04/11/1969 - 04/27/1969
Hiram Bocachica 12 09/20/2000 - 05/29/2001

Al Ferrara 12 08/07/1963 - 05/05/1965
Source: Stats, LLC
Seager has gone 25-for-74 (.338) with a .437 on-base
percentage, eight doubles, three homers and 13 RBI in 21
games (19 starts) with the Dodgers. The last Dodger in
franchise history to reach base in his first 19+ career starts
was Jim Gilliam in 1953 (24).
THE SECURITY BLANKET: Dodger Cy Young candidate Zack
Greinke will take the mound tonight for the first time since Sept. 18,
after missing his turn last week due to calf soreness. Greinke is
looking for his 19th victory and currently leads the Major Leagues in
ERA (1.65) and WHIP (0.85). The right-hander has won five
consecutive starts since Aug. 27 and has put together a season for the
ages:

Dwight Gooden, 1985 NYM 24-4 (.857) 1.53
SOURCE: STATS, LLC
DON’T MAKE HIM MAD: Since joining the Dodgers in 2013,
Zack Greinke has gone 24-7 with a 2.03 ERA (63 ER/279.2 IP) in 42
starts following a Los Angeles loss, with the team posting a 31-11
record in those games.
Greinke has pitched at least 6.0 innings in each of his first 30
starts of the season, joining Andy Messersmith (34 starts of
6.0+ IP to open the 1975 season) as the only pitchers in Los
Angeles Dodger history to open the season in such fashion. It
is currently the longest active streak in the Major Leagues.
ROUND-TRIPPERS: The Dodgers are one behind the Rockies (181)
in their bid to lead the National League in homers for the first time
since 1983, Eight different players – Adrian Gonzalez (28), Joc
Pederson (25), Yasmani Grandal (16), Justin Turner (15), Andre
Ethier (14), Jimmy Rollins (13), Alex Guerrero (11) and Yasiel
Puig (11) – have hit double-digit homers this season, one shy of a
franchise high:

Howie Kendrick is one homer shy of joining this group with
nine home runs in 112 games. Including 11 games prior to
his DL stint, he has hit safely in 15 of his last 18 games,
batting .342 (26-for-76) with three doubles, two homers and
14 RBI since July 28.
Carl Crawford is hitting .333 (8-for-24) with a homer off
tonight’s Giants’ starter, Jake Peavy. First baseman Adrian
Gonzalez leads the club with three homers off Peavy and his
20 homers against the Giants lead all active players.
A LOOK BACK: On this date in 1988, Orel Hershiser pitched his
59th consecutive scoreless inning, throwing 10.0 shutout innings
against the Padres to break Don Drysdale’s 1968 Major League mark
of 58.0 consecutive scoreless frames. Hershiser, who won the Cy
Young that season, carried the momentum into the postseason and was
named NLCS MVP and World Series MVP after going 3-0 with one
save, a 1.05 ERA and three complete games (two shutouts) in six
games (five starts).
Also on this date in 2006, James Loney collected four hits,
including two homers, and drove in nine runs at Colorado,
establishing a single-game Los Angeles RBI record and tying
Duke Snider for the all-time franchise mark.
THE BEST OF THE WEST: The Dodgers have just seven games
remaining in the 2015 regular season, which will all be played against
divisional opponents. Los Angeles has gone 41-28 (.594) against NL
West clubs.
