Jewish Community Center of Paramus/Congregation Beth Tikvah
A story found in the section of the Mishnah known as Pirkei Avot teaches us about an incident in the life of Rabbi Yose ben Kisma. “I was once walking along the way, when a man came upon me and greeted me, and I returned his greeting. The man said to me, “Rabbi, where are you from?” I said to him, “I come from a great city filled with sages and learned men”. He said to me, “Rabbi, if you would come to live with us in our city, I would give you thousands of golden denars and precious stones and pearls”. I responded to him, “Even if you were to give me all the silver and gold, and precious stones and pearls in the world, I would not live anywhere but in a place of Torah”.
This evening, we acknowledge, honor and celebrate four distinguished and beloved members of our Congregation, the Cohens and the Smiths. We honor them for their outstanding service to the community, and for their unique contributions to the Jewish Community Center of Paramus/Congregation Beth Tikvah. As the honorees of our Journal Dinner Dance, we recognize with gratitude and great respect all their hard work and efforts, and the sharing of both financial and personal resources, so that our Synagogue might thrive, and make a meaningful difference in the community. In the finest tradition of our the distinguished group of men and women who have similarly been honored at previous dinner dances over the years, they have served our synagogue wisely, educated their children within its walls and values, and worked tirelessly to insure that there would be a strong Jewish presence in our community.
Yet as our congregation extends this honor to these deserving people, we are challenged to look beyond their record of brilliant and passionate service. Ultimately, the reason we recognize our honorees this evening is that their efforts have maintained the Jewish Community Center of Paramus/Congregation Beth Tikvah as a place of Torah. Like Rabbi Yose ben Kisma in the story I quoted earlier, they recognized not only the meaning of their sacrifices, but their purpose and worth as well. And for this, we thank them. May God grant them years of good health, and may they continue to serve as a source of strength and inspiration to all.
This wonderful tribute to the Cohens and the Smiths is also a testament to the efforts of a dedicated group of volunteers who each year work with great passion to make our annual Ad Journal Dinner Dance such a wonderful event for all. I want to offer my sincere thanks to the chairs of this great event and your wonderful committee for your outstanding service to the JCCP/CBT. We appreciate the time you devote this project. Your dedication and attention to detail makes all the difference.
