August-December is the best season to come

    to Lorentsz National Park

Tourism was limited to less than 100 people in 1998. Before

recent civil unrest, some 50 climbers ascended Puncak Jaya

    each year.

There are some hotels in Wamena and some modern (withtraditional style) resorts near Baliem Valley

Visitors need several permits from different places (ministries,

army, police etc) to travel to the island in general and climbing

    the mountain specifically.

The predominantly open-cast mining techniques have had seriousenvironmental impacts:250,000 tones of heavy metal and other

wastes are poured into the local river every day, there are also oilspillages, logging for fuel and extensive dormitory development tohouse the work force of 4,000 (Handelsman, 2009; Kartawinata &Widjaja,1988; Petocz,1989).

    One petroleum exploration title held

by Conoco remains in the Park on thesoutheastern edge.

    A forestry concession outside the

    eastern boundary of Lorentz also

directly affects the site by permitting

illegal water-accessed logging andpoaching, a taking for whichcompensation is never considered.

A greater and growing threat comes from road andlane building and uncontrolled tourism in thevulnerable high altitude swampy Lake Habbema basin.

Other threats include three road schemes whichwould traverse Lorentz National Park including a road

between Timika on the western boundary andAramsolki in the centre of the park (Kartawinata andWidjaja, 1988).

A minor and localized threat comes from uncontrolledtourism developments in the Lake Habbema area (ahigh altitude swampland). Trekking to Mt. Jaya has

already had severe ecological impacts due to litteringand firewood collecting. Hiking in the moss-fernecosystem will certainly lead to more degradation.
