Revision Techniques & Preparing for Examinations - Learning Styles

VAK Learning Styles Explanation

The VAK learning style model suggests that most people can be divided into one of three preferred styles of learning. These

three styles are as follows (and there is no right or wrong learning style):

Someone with Visual learning style has a preference for seen or observed things, including pictures, diagrams, demonstrations,

displays, handouts, films, flip chart etc. These people will use phrases such as ‘show me’, ‘let’s have a look at that’ and will be

best able to perform a new tasks after reading the instructions or watching someone else do it first. These are the people

who will work from lists and written direction and instructions.

Someone with Auditory learning style has a preference for the transfer of information through listening: to the spoken word,

of self or others, of sounds and noises. These people will use phrases such as ‘tell me’, ‘let’s talk it over’ and will be best able

to perform a new task after listening to instructions from an expert. These are the people who are happy being given spoken

instructions over the telephone and can remember all the words to songs that they hear!

Someone with a Kinaesthetic learning style has as preference for physical experience - touch, feeling, holding, doing, practical

hands on experiences. These people will use phrases such as ‘let me try’, ‘how do you feel?’ and will be best able to perform a

new task by going ahead and trying it out, learning as they go. These are the people who like to experiment, hands on and

never look at the instructions first

People commonly have a main preferred learning style, but this will be part of a blend of all three. Some people have a very

strong preference, other people have a more even mixture of two or less commonly three styles.

When you know your preferred learning styles you understand the type of learning that bests suits you. This enables you to

choose the types of learning that work best for you.

There is no right or wrong learning style. The point is that there are types of learning that are right for your own preferred

learning style.

Please note, this is not a scientifically validated testing instrument - it is a free assessment tool designed to give a broad

indication of preferred learning styles.

LORD GREY SCHOOL

EQUIPMENT FOR LEARNING POLICY

Reminder Having the correct school equipment can significantly enhance the quality of learning opportunities for your child. At

Lord Grey School we believe that all students should arrive for learning with the correct equipment, which is a non negotiable

expectation. We wish our students to be equipped to meet the highest possible standards, yet it is not possible for

Lord Grey School to provide equipment for individual students beyond that of stationery and course materials. We do ask

that all students carry the required equipment at all times:

Pencil case including:

Ball point pens

Pencil sharpener

Calculator

HB pencils

Scissors

Glue stick

Ruler

Compasses

Rubber

Protractor

Also required:

Drawing set

Mini stapler

Pocket Thesaurus

Pocket dictionary

Fountain pen

Colouring pencils/pens

PE kit must be brought in for every PE lesson

Cooking ingredients for Food Technology by arrangement

Recommended:

World atlas (at home)

Foreign language dictionary

Please note: Student Services do stock quantities of stationery at very reasonable prices.

Important P.E. Uniform

Lord Grey students are expected to maintain a high standard of uniform at all times of the day. Uniforms are vital in instilling a sense of pride and unity within the school.

Students must bring their PE Kit to every PE lesson. If you fail to bring your PE uniform to your lesson, you will be placed into a “Friday PE School Detention”. If a medical note is produced, you will still be required to wear your kit even though you will not be undertaking a physical activity. PE Department

A number of students are still coming to school without a school

bag or even a pen! This must stop.

An all girls choir from Lord Grey has been practicing hard over the past few weeks to

be ready to perform at the Milton Keynes Theatre where the touring production of

"Whistle down the Wind" was appearing last week.

Under the guidance and encouragement of and in conjunction with Milton Keynes

Partnership and the theatre itself, the girls rehearsed songs to perform pre-show, in the

beautiful and imposing foyer to the audience prior to going into the auditorium. "No

Matter What" from the show, and Coldplay's "Fix You", together with a choreographed

routine to accompany the music

delighted everybody, including

myself, Head of Performing Arts-

Miss Webb, their family, friends

and theatregoers alike.

A huge bonus was the choir were given tickets to see the enthralling

show afterwards, and to their huge delight the lead role was taken by

star singer Jonathan Ansell, who recently came to Lord Grey to perform,

and also coach the Senior Choir. Afterwards we got to chat with

Jonathan and some very delighted girls got to take photos too! In all a

truly wonderful evening, that will stay in the memory for a very long

time.

Twenty-two local children from the Myra Tiffin Performing Arts School,

Stony Stratford, took part with the Whistle company and appeared on stage. One of the lucky twenty-two was

Xa-Zurae Cotterell, 7DBA who had this wonderful opportunity to join the Whistle Down the Wind cast. Xa-Zurae

commented about her experience as follows: “I feel very privileged to have been one of the twenty-two students chosen from Myra

Tiffin Performing Arts School, to perform in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical production, Whistle Down the Wind. I enjoyed this

experience as I had quite a large part and acted in eight scenes and the finale! I have been in other productions in the MK Theatre, but

this was by far my favourite. My mother was also in the show and acting alongside me. Acting is something I love to do and this show

has given me the chance to show my ability. I found it so much fun working with the whole cast, especially Jonathan Ansell and the two

touring children.”

If we want to encourage children to read we have to

begin by nurturing their love of stories, and no-one can

do that better than a good Storyteller.

So we are delighted to announce that we have

arranged a visit by John Harris, one of only a handful of

full-time professional Storytellers in Britain.

As well as telling stories to great acclaim in hundreds of schools,

libraries and literary festivals all over the country he has been

interviewed and asked to tell stories on BBC Radio 4, BBC 6

Music and Planet Rock, and has acted as consultant for

programmes on Radio 4. Visits by John were the prize last year in

a national schools writing competition. He's told stories at the

Roald Dahl Museum and was a guest speaker at The Prince of

Wales' Education Summer School, where Michael Morpurgo

described his contribution as 'A Tour de Force'.

He will be spending the day with us

on Thursday 20th May and will be

telling stories to Year 7 students. At

the last count there were over 350

stories in his head and he’s always

working on more. They come from

everywhere: myths and legends that

are thousands of years old, folk and

fairy tales from every corner of the

world, his own amazing stories and

even some things that haven't

happened yet but probably will.

It’s going to be an exciting day, and

we hope that all the Year 7 students

enjoy it.

Isabella Coles, Librarian

STORYTELLING DAY

Wandering in the dark

Watching the sun go down

Watching the moon

There I am

Not knowing what to do

Watching the trees sleep

Watching the birds go to their nest

There I am

A girl of 15

Looking behind the trees

If I would see my mother

Looking up to the sky

If I would hear the voice of my father

Am I alive?

Someone answer me

Is this how the world is?

Someone tell me

Who I am?!
