Counselor’s Corner Whitney BilleterThe elementary participated in Red Ribbon week, October 22nd – 26th. It is a nationally celebrated week in response to the tragic death of a drug enforcement agent Enrique Camarena. Angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction caused by drugs in America.

Red ribbon Week was nationally recognized in 1988 and has been celebrated yearly to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, drug and violence. It is the largest, most visible prevention awareness campaign observed yearly in the United States.

Elementary students and staff were encouraged to participate in themed days to encourage and support a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. I visited their classrooms and we focused on learning about many aspects of health and safety as well as increasing drug awareness and prevention! Together we can provide a united effort to maintain a drug-free school and community!

The Wolves Junior High football team wrapped out their 2018 season with a home contest against the Alma Cardinals. The Wolves and Cardinals were in a back and forth first half. Eventually the Wolves were unable to keep up with the Cardinals scoring attack. The Wolves fell with a final score of 40-14. The boys worked hard this season and continually improved game to game and week to week. The boys currently are into their wrestling season. The boys have scheduled a meet at Alma at 2:00 pm on November 13th. Next up for the boys will be a contest at Medicine Valley on November 16th at 1:00 pm. On November 20th at 1:00 pm the boys will travel to Cambridge for a meet. Then in December the boys will go to Arapahoe for a 2:00 pm meet and finish out the wrestling season with FKC at Loomis at 10:00 am. If you can please can to a contest and support the boys. The boys will start basketball practice as soon as wrestling is over. Basketball games will start in January with a home contest versus Overton on January 9th at 1:00. Then the basketball season for the boys will start.

With the first semester nearing the end and Thanksgiving just a few days away, tis’ the season to count our blessings and to give thanks for the special people in our lives. I was able to attend the state school board convention in Omaha. The convention provides numerous sessions on school topics that are valuable to education. One of the keynote speakers really hit home for this time of year. His presentation was about a gentleman that worked at a Walmart in Brookings S.D. This gentleman made an impact on everyone he met and people would only go through his check out line. He made each and every person feel like they were the only person there in the line. People didn’t go to his line because he did anything out of the ordinary, they went to his line because he treated them in a way that made them feel special. This is a valuable life lesson and I’ve heard many of the students here at Loomis talk about the golden rule. Treat others the way you want to be treated. I am thankful that Loomis has kids that know the golden rule. I am thankful for the teachers and staff here that care and appreciate the students.

Winter activities start up next week. One-Acts is heading into the crunch time of their season while basketball and wrestling are gearing up to get their season’s started next week. The state test scores from last year are in. Parents should get a copy of them in the mail. I will share the school percentages next month. The scores were impressive.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving! After Thanksgiving, we have 3 and half weeks and it will be time for Christmas break.

Loomis Boys Basketball By Coach Drew Billeter The weather is starting to change, and that means it's time for the winter sports season to begin. The boys basketball team will begin practice on Monday, November 12th. There are 22 members out for boys basketball team. The seniors on the team are Aaron Dow, Andrew Dennis, Isaac Wahls, Isaac Dunn, Brian Hemmele, Payton Shultz, and Aden Matejka. The juniors include, Joshua Marcy, Justus Harvey, and Austin Hahn. The sophomores include, Carson Orcutt, Josh Carter, Aden Lovitt, Khaleb Pafford, and Jackson Lauby. The incoming freshmen are Quinn Johnson, Shay Swanson, Cristian Blincow, Aidan Perry, Drake Hermanson, Damien Jensen, and Gabe Kimball. The student managers are Wes Trompke, Clay Meyer, Cale Nelson, Riggen Ludeke and Houston Billeter. Loomis is coached by Drew Billeter, and assisted by Casey Vrbka, and Jason Maaske.

The boys basketball team has 4 returning starters and 9 returning letter winners from their 18-6 2017-18 campaign. Returning starters include Aaron Dow, Isaac Wahls, Joshua Marcy, Brian Hemmele and Andrew Dennis. The wolves have 4 other returning letter winners; Isaac Dunn, Payton Shultz, Carson Orcutt and Aden Lovitt. Freshman Shay Swanson, and Quinn Johnson are both likely to contribute as well.

We have a lot of depth, experience, size and athleticism returning from a very good 17-18 team. I look for us to be very competitive in our conference and in the state. We have a lot of players that have experience, and a lot of players that can step in and play a variety of positions. Our depth and athleticism should be our strength. We also have some young players that will step in and see a lot of playing time early in the season. We need to stay healthy and learn how to play together. Building chemistry between the players will be very important.

Loomis will open its season on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at SEM, and then host Overton on Friday, November 30, 2018. Both games will tip off at 7:45p.m.

Lady Wolves Volleyball

The Lady Wolves Volleyball Team had a great season ending with a record of 11-15. The girls showed up ready to work hard every day and improved consistently through the year. To say Coach Bergman and I are proud of them is an understatement. We were the #2 seed in our Sub-District which was played at Kearney Catholic on October 29th. First, we took on Wilcox-Hildreth, beating them in 4 sets 25-8, 21-25, 25-9, 25-18. We then had to turn right around and take on Bertrand where the girls played one of their best matches of the season. The match was back and forth but we ended up dropping in 4 hard fought sets 25-27, 26-24, 25-20, 25-22. No one likes to lose, but the girls gave 110% until the last point and had nothing to hang their heads about. One of our goals of the season was to improve our mental toughness and by the end of the season they overcame a lot of hurdles and were playing at a very high level. The girls worked hard, played as a team, had a lot of fun and we’re very proud of how they represented our school and community. We will definitely miss our 3 seniors, Megan, McKayla and Alley, but we are also very excited for the future of Loomis Volleyball!

Hurray for the Kelly and White By Olivia O’Clair

We bleed kelly green here in the halls (or gyms, or classrooms) of LHS. When I walk into our school I see a “Loomis Wolves” T-shirt showing our school spirit at every turn, our administrators at the door with a “good morning” on the tips of their tongues, and the students buzzing with remarks of the upcoming/recent sporting events. I love Loomis, and it is evident that so many people here also feel the same. Some people have had the opportunity to grow up in our village from the earliest stages of life, some people move in to start families, but some go above and beyond for Loomis. Many of the people who contribute to our lives in Loomis also experienced a Loomis upbringing.

I wondered what qualities make Loomis so special to these graduates, and I received so many answers. One overwhelming response was that Loomis feels like home. In such a small town, we can afford to take the time to get to know everyone in our school and really care for them. Some of these graduates came back because of the safety here; kids can ride their bikes in the streets or walk themselves down to the park without parental accompaniment. I know my classmates and I can turn to each other as siblings, just like the classes before us could. Additionally, each student can have a real relationship with his or her teachers. Take Mr. Weaver as an example. Although he’s new to Loomis, he’s already finding ways to make individuals feel special by taking pictures with them on their birthdays. Loomis shows such a strong community bond, and many parents move here simply because they want their kids to be a part of it. As LHS graduate and third grade teacher Mrs. Schukar put it, “We feel like there are many ways to be involved when you're from a smaller community. It's important to us that our kids grow up in a hardworking, safe, and kind community... we feel like that describes the community of Loomis and a place we'd like to call home.” There are indeed many ways to be involved in Loomis. Most of our high school students are involved in a myriad of clubs and activities, which is something they probably couldn’t do in a bigger school. Loomis is all about teamwork, and our teams work hard.

Our schooling isn’t all textbook. Our teachers and peers go above and beyond to give us the foundation for a successful life. Graduates leave Loomis with high expectations for themselves, along with pride in what they’ve accomplished already. Loomis teaches students basic social skills too. Many kids here learn how to take responsibility for their actions and work, while also learning “respect for everyone; peers and authority,” states Ms. Bergman, a 2013 graduate. “I also learned how to have a work ethic that makes success possible. I learned that you are as successful as you choose to be. Yes, there might be circumstances in your way, but there’s always a solution if you’re willing to look for it.” Teachers here take an interest in each student and help all students push themselves to be their best. That kind of support can follow a student into college and his or her future life.

Even in our small community, we have a big impact on our residents. I asked these graduates what their favorite part of Loomis was, and their answers reflected on our athletics and community. Some graduates love the tradition of Loomis in our athletics and the last names that have been passed down. They’re proud to still see our kelly green when other schools have needed to co-op. Some mentioned the amazing teachers in our school who taught both them and their children, or the great pride that surrounds our school and its members. Loomis is a community that comes together to support everyone, especially those who need help. Many parents are ecstatic about the community their kids are growing up in. Mrs. Schukar talked about the elementary boys playing pick-up games of football as the “big boys” play as well. She continued, “I love that my daughter is totally smitten with the cheerleaders because they took two seconds to stop at say hello to her on the sideline.” As a student, it reminds me that there are little eyes watching me, and I love being a role model to the younger students.

Loomis is a community full of people who support each other and fight for what they believe in. Our community is a family. I look to my classmates and I see kids who have my back, and I know I have theirs too. I love the connections I’ve made over my 13 years here, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Loomis is an absolutely amazing community, and I’m truly blessed to be a part of it. Go Wolves!
