Over Christmas break a group of 15 students went to “Los Alcarrizos” of the Santo Domingo providence of the Dominican Republic. The team helped build a house for a local family in need. Led by men’s lacrosse coach Chris Sutherland, the team consisted of a few Palm Beach Atlantic University lacrosse players, other PBA students and members of First Pres- byterian Church of North Palm Beach. Upon returning from the trip and in the wake in the devestation in Haiti, it opened my eyes to the needs of those all around us. It was difﬁcult to witness the poor living conditions and re- turn back to the U.S. without feeling the need to be more thankful for all that I have. The Dominican Republic is one of the most breath tak- ing places on earth, yet has a large population struggling to survive. As part of the team and as a photographer I tried to capture the contrast between the immense beau- ty of the land and the extreme poverty. While the team was in the DR they also performed skits depicting the birth of Jesus Christ from the Gospel John. Men’s lacrosse coach Chris Sutherland and Fritz Van der Grift dig the holes before placing the cinderblock down for the foundation of the house. It is the coach’s eighth year leading the trip and this year his wife and three childeren were able to come.
