ADK Outdoor Excursion 2020This June we will be taking 12 lucky Master Teachers on a trip to the High Peaks Region of the Adirondacks.

When:June 29-July 1The trip will start on Monday June 29th and end on Wednesday July 1st. Three days of activities and a two night stay.

Where: We will be staying at the Adirondack Loj at Heart Lake near Lake Placid. This is about a 7 hour drive from Buffalo, NY. Getting there will be the responsibility of the Master Teacher. Please consider carpooling with the other members.

What's included: Monday (just Dinner)Tuesday (breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)Wednesday (Breakfast and Lunch)

What to expect:The high peaks of  the Adirondacks are not to be taken lightly. The trails are rugged, steep, rocky and the weather can change very rapidly without much notice. For example, the hike down into the Niagara gorge would seem like walking on a paved bike path compared to any part of the ADK's..With that being said we will offer three different hikes per day based on experience and trail ability. There will be an advanced group that will cover 10-12 miles of advanced terrain. The intermediate group would cover 7-10 miles of intermediate/advanced terrain. The "I'm new to the Daks" group would cover 4-6 miles of intermediate terrain. When selecting a group to join, please be honest about your abilities.

Itinerary:Meet at the ADK Loj on Monday June 29th by 12 noon. We will have a quick lunch and tackle our first taste of the Daks. This will be a full group hike up a short rugged peak. Roughly a 4-5 mile hike. Dinner will be provided that evening at the Loj. We will have on the trail discussions about the geologic history of the area and hands on rock and mineral identification. After dinner we will discuss Tuesday's objective and get our packs ready for an early start to the day.

Tuesday will be our biggest day for each group. We will have breakfast at the Loj and will head out soon there after. We will eat bagged lunches provided by the ADK loj and plan to be back by dinner. There will be on trail more geologic history of the area and a mapping skills lesson. That evening we will debrief the day over dinner supplied by the loj and we are looking to have a talk about the area from a local ranger of the ADK.

Wednesday we will do one last hike on the way out of town. The legs will be acclimated to the environment and we will attempt to tackle the 4,000 foot Cascade peak just a short drive away. Breakfast and a bagged trail lunch will be provided by the Loj.

Ahead of time:I am planning on two meetings at Buff State ahead of time. The first meeting will be to go over gear and clothing selections, discuss the routes we will be tackling, detail the agenda and hand out maps to each of the participants. The next one, maybe two meetings will be focused on Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) and wilderness first aid skills. We will go over how to build splints, basic first aid and "what if" scenarios.
