SAVE THE DATE: CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS LUNCHEON MAY 4, 2016On May 4th, 2016 ArtsFund will present the 28th Annual Celebration of the Arts Luncheon at the Westin Seattle. Join us and 1,000 arts, business and civic leaders as we present awards for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts and Lifetime Dedication to the Arts. Registration will open in Spring 2016. Last year, ArtsFund’s 27th Annual Celebration of the Arts luncheon was highlighted by keynote speaker Vijay Gupta’s discussion of the healing and redemptive powers of music and remarks by award winners Tom Skerritt and Ann Ramsay-Jenkins.
In this special print edition of the ArtsFund newsletter, we look back at notable 2015 news from ArtsFund and from the field, and invite you to join us in looking ahead towards 2016.
2015 was a big year for the arts in the Central Puget Sound region. Whether you attended Seattle Repertory Theatre’s production of Great Society, Pacific Northwest Ballet’s final season of the Sendak and Stowell Nutcracker, The Bruce Lee Exhibit at the Wing Luke Museum, Tacoma Art Museum’s new Haub Family Galleries, took the kids to Mary Poppins at the Village Theater, joined 7,000 people at the Seattle Chamber Music Society’s Music Under the Stars concert series, or any of the other thousands of cultural offerings, we hope you got a chance to take part in art this year. Looking back at this dynamic list is an opportunity to reflect on the vibrant and diverse arts and cultural sector your support makes possible.
The arts not only entertain, inspire and challenge us, they give our children a greater chance of success in school and beyond, promote health and healing, and elevate our quality of life. In the ArtsFund Economic Impact Study to be released later this month, we’ll be spotlighting the ways in which
cultural activity also drives economic vitality and is integral to our region’s identity. Arts and culture are essential building blocks in the long term health of communities, and we believe access to arts and culture should be available to all. Last year, ArtsFund’s annual grants supported 55 organizations and the 7 million people they reached through over 10,000 exhibits, performances and programs. Together with our additional programs and services, we impacted over 100 cultural organizations and the communities they serve. With your help, we can do even more.

COMMUNITY IMPACT AWARDSOn October 21, ArtsFund was named Non Profit of the Year by Seattle Business magazine, which honored Washington state businesses and organizations that are making a tangible, measurable impact on their communities. A sold-out crowd at the Museum of History and Industry celebrated 26 honorees in categories ranging from sustainability to youth development. All winners and nominees are profiled in the November issue of Seattle Business magazine.

CAMPAIGN 2015 yeAr IN revIewGRANT MAKING
PROGRAMMING
ArtsFund invested $2.4 Million in grants to 55 arts organizations throughout King and Pierce Counties in 2015. These grants helped our grantees produce over 10,000 productions and exhibits reaching more than 7.1 million patrons, fill the gap in arts education by providing over 786,000 students access to the arts, and increase access where cost is a barrier by providing 1.5 million free or discounted tickets.
power2give.org/PugetSound, ArtsFund’s regional arts crowd funding platform, celebrated its two year anniversary on October 1, 2015. In that time, the platform has infused over $850,000 in new funds for the arts through project-based support to over 170 arts and cultural projects in the Puget Sound region.
The impact of the platform can be traced through a number of different factors, including the depth and breadth of projects, which have funded artist fees, production costs, student access, facilities
ArtsFund’s programming continued to grow in 2015. ArtsFund’s Associates Program, the annual volunteer corps that equips individuals with fundraising and leadership skills, had participation from 113 individuals from 65 companies and raised over $450,000 for the 2015 Campaign. Additionally, the Board Leadership Training program, which strengthens arts organizations by teaching the fundamentals of board service and offering practical internships with non-profit boards, served 55 individuals from 44 organizations. A recent survey of past participants found that 75% had served on a board after completing the program.
ArtsFund hosted a number of convenings in 2015, including Beyond Engagement 2.0: Local Pathways to Equity & Inclusion in the Arts (June 30) and a Two -Year Anniversary strategy session with power2give/PugetSound posting organizations (October 2). These convenings served 184 individuals from 91 distinct organizations.

ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDYArtsFund’s 2014 Economic Impact Study is slated to be released this month, with a host of presentations to follow over the rest of the year and into 2016. The EIS compiles data from hundreds of non-profit arts, culture, and science organizations in the Central Puget Sound region, as well as over 3,500 patrons, to assess their impact to our region’s economy and identity. The full report, along with an executive summary and informational brochure, will be available online at artsfund.org/EIS.

ARTSFUND IN THE COMMUNITYArtsFund continued to build on previous years with a number of community events. New partnerships were formed with Seattle Sounders FC for a youth arts contest and with the Seattle Art Fair in their inaugural year. These were in addition to the third consecutive year of Arts Night at Safeco Field and the second consecutive year of the ArtsFund Celebrates Creativity awards at Seafair’s Milk Carton Derby. CULTURAL ACCESS WASHINGTONFollowing a nearly decade long effort, Cultural Access Washington has succesfully passed legislation in Olympia. On July 6, Governor Jay Inslee signed House Bill 2263 into law, thereby allowing county residents to vote on whether to implement cultural access programs funded by a seven-year 0.1% sales tax increase. Should voters approve the measure, the county would establish a cultural access program that would allocate funds to be used for the benefit of the public to cultural organizations with a commitment to educate Washingtonians about arts, culture, science, and heritage.
The signing of this bill highlights the sustained efforts of Cultural Access Washington—a coalition of arts, cultural, science, and heritage institutions—in addition to a network of local and statewide advocates. The coalition has now moved into a planning and research phase in preparation for a public campaign to get the initiative on local ballots and passed.

BOARD CHAIR SANDY McDADE VISITS ALL 55 ARTSFUND GRANTEESI made a little bet with a fellow Board member when I became ArtsFund’s Chair last November. He didn’t think that I could (or would) visit all 55 ArtsFund grantee organizations in my first twelve months as Chair. He was pretty confident about winning – that is almost one every week, after all, and they are spread out all over our region. I took the bet and started a blog to track my progress (www.whereissandy.com). About a week ago I won -- my 55th event was the Audra McDonald concert at the Pantages Theater in Tacoma (although I still have a few events to post on the blog).
This has been a fabulous opportunity to experience the full breadth and depth of the arts in our community. I have learned so much and it has been a lot of fun!
During the course of the year I experienced just about every kind of art the Puget Sound has to offer -- dance, film, theater, music, visual art and more. I learned that the organizations ArtsFund supports are more inventive, challenging and innovative than I ever imagined. In addition to the work seen on stage and in exhibition halls, these organizations serve thousands of students through innovative and very substantive education programs. They have large and diverse audiences that are deeply committed to their work and many are expanding their reach to serve new communities in our region.
These organizations contribute to our rich arts environment in their own unique ways, but they share at least one thing in common: they receive vital operating support from ArtsFund. ArtsFund’s mission is to strengthen these organizations and the communities they serve by providing this crucial support. We need your help to make it happen.
