The Rascal Shir t is constructed exlusively for The Dark Peak using the finest fabr ic sourced from one of England’s most esteemed shir t cloth mil ls . The finished garment is cut, assembled and finished by hand at one of the last remaining shir t manufacturer s in England, recognised for their dedication to quality.

This collection of images presents a close look at the l imited number of

Rascal Shir ts avai lable and showcases a handful of the people who were involved in their production.

Above - shir t patterns adorn the walls of the pattern cutting room, situated in a lofty attic space crowned with a wooden pent roof.

Opposite - John Carrol , chief pattern-cutter and

master to his apprentice , son Ryan Carrol , whose job it is to translate measurements and specifications into paper patterns which can be sent to master cloth cutter, Anthony Rose (over leaf).

Opposite - Anthony Rose , head cloth cutter of over fi fty year s exper ience .

“You spent three year s laying the cloth out and measur ing the lengths before they let you cut it . You’ve got to under stand how the pieces go together in the finished ar ticle . We make the ful l-matched shir t for str ipes and checks, which means

the pattern matches at the shoulder, the sleeves, the pocket, across the front and the cuffs .”

Opposite - Carol Wil l iams, a cuffmaker with over 50 year s of industr y exper ience .

Carol can be found at the landing of a slender staircase from the cutting room, in an open plan space (centre-fold) fi l led with star tl ing natural l ight and the sporadic buzz of sewing machines.

She is responsible for layer ing, folding and sewing the layer s of shir t ing to produce the finest hand-made cuffs of ever y shir t .

Above - Rascal Shir t in English-woven blue bengal str ipe Oxford features inver ted pleat, spl it yoke hand-cut on the bias and hang loop.

Opposite - Each machinist special ises in a cer tain element of the shir t , such as attaching the sleeves or constructing the front of the garment.

Each completed piece is deposited in a tray at the helm of the machinist responsible for the next process.

The finished shir t is a testament to the craft and exper ience of these women and the collective pr ide they find in their work.

Previous - Rascal Shir t in English-woven blue Oxford cloth. Each shir t is finished with genuine shell buttons produced in the Midlands.

Above - Each garment is checked individual ly before the plackets and cuffs are prepped for button holing.

Each button is independently attached to the finished shir t to ensure the perfect tension is created ever y time .

Below - The final phase of the process is quality control . Each garment is checked one at a time to ensure each al l cloth, seams and buttons are finished to the exacting standards of the factor y.

Each shir t that comes off their machines must pass this r igorous examination to leave the factor y f loor.
