Longview Recreation Receives Award of Merit Longview Recreation has received an Award of Merit from the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA). On Saturday, February 12, the USSSA of Washington State recognized the City of Longview Parks & Recreation for “Outstanding Development of their Washington State United States Slo-Pitch Softball Association Programs.”

Attending the ceremony to accept the award was Jennifer Wills, league & tournament director, and Steve Plampin, area director from Longview-Kelso Slo-Pitch Softball for Adults at Roy Morse Park. The award was presented by Regional Director Don Goldsby and State Director Richard Calvo who stated, “Your participation and commitment has helped promote the slo-pitch softball game throughout the state.”

Parks & Recreation has been associated with USSSA Slo-Pitch softball since 2005. Recreation Manager Dick Mueller reports Longview Recreation hosted a state tournament, and has seen the program grow from 47 local teams to over 90 teams, a 91% increase in five years. Tournaments bring in over 100 teams each year with up to 50% from outside our area patronizing local lodging and restaurants.

“These softball programs provide important health benefits and increase economic development through tourism,” said Mueller.

Information about spring or summer adult softball leagues or tournaments can be found online at www.mylongview.com/parks_rec, or by calling Longview Recreation at 442-5400.

Tobacco Free ParksMembers from Cowlitz on the Move healthy lifestyles coalition presented their Achieve grant community action plan and recommendations to Longview City Council. One of the action steps was to investigate the possibility of improving health by eliminating second hand smoke in parks. After the presentation, the city council passed a motion to form a committee to review issues regarding smoke-free parks.

The city sought individuals to serve on the committee with a wide range of backgrounds, interests, and ideas about smoke-free parks. The committee members were very diverse and included health care, law enforcement, faith community, schools, teen representative, and smokers who use parks. The first meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee was held February 2010 followed by additional meetings. Mem-bers received health related research and conducted a public input process.

After seven committee meetings, a public survey and extensive public input, the committee sent a recommendation to the city council. The City Council agreed with the recommendation and ap-proved an ordinance creating tobacco free parks in Longview with designated smoking areas in larger community parks.

Archie Anderson Park Master PlanA City of Longview awarded a Community Development Block Grant for a master plan at Archie Anderson Park. The park was built in the 1950’s and in need of improvement to meet current neighborhood needs. Longview Parks & Recreation, Highlands Neighborhood Association, Highlands Activity & Beatification Committee and Central Youth Baseball collaborated on this project to create a plan that all the partners support. Over 160 neighbor-hood residents participated in public involvement which included a Vision Workshop at St. Helens School and Park Design Open House held at the park. After neighborhood partners finalized the plan the city council approved the master plan. Features of the park plan include neighborhood gardens, fruit or flowering tree orchard, basketball courts, playground, water spray area, neighborhood building, picnic areas, multi use field, and baseball fields. There are two parking lots and a trail head connection to the Highlands Trail. The neighborhood partners will meet soon to discuss funding opportunities for the park improvements. To become involved in this project please call Longview Recreation at 442-5400.

The National Park Service provided a grant to plan a walking, bike and horse trail along both sides of the

Cowlitz River between Lexington and Gerhart Gardens Park. This trail will connect with the North Cowlitz River Trail planned several years ago by Cowlitz on

the Move, City of Castle Rock and several other community partners. Longview Parks

& Recreation along with Kelso, Cowlitz County, Council of Governments, Cowlitz

on the Move, Pathways 2020 and the Family Health Center spent a year collect-

ing information and obtaining public

input on the proposed South River Trail plan. The pur-pose of the trail is to encourage physical activity, reduce

air pollution, connect communities, provide outdoor recreation, promote alternative transportation, attract

new families & business, prevent obesity & chronic dis-ease, increase real estate values and increase safety. There were three community outreach opportunities held to get citizen involvement. The City of Longview, City of Kelso, Cowlitz County and Council of Governments adopted

the South Cowlitz River Trail plan as an amendment to the regional trail plan.
