Strengthening the Local Economy
Contrary to popular belief, it’s not a toad steepedin vinegar. It’s the newest addition to DowntownLongview. The Pickled Frog Grub and Pub is a
new eatery and sports bar which is located at 112 E. Tyler,in the former Texas Furniture location. They are slated toopen in late spring or early summer.
Partners Judd Byrnes and Paul Hancock chosedowntown Longview as the site of their new restaurantbecause, as natives of Longview, they wanted to help inthe revitalization of downtown. They saw the potential ofa growing downtown district in which to locate. Theopportunity to purchase the former Texas Furniture Storebuilding turned out to be just what they needed. The13,500 square foot building will house a full servicerestaurant, sports bar and will feature live music onweekends. The Pickled Frog will be open Mondaythrough Saturday, and the menu will be similar to that ofDave & Buster’s with a Cajun theme.
According to Byrnes, the most challenging part ofbringing this new business to downtown Longview was,“Getting through all the necessary licenses and permits, what we thought would be a 60-90 day process endedtaking about 18 months.”
The Pickled Frog received a matching grant from theMain Street Façade Improvement Grant Program to helpthem complete the re-surfacing of the restaurant’s frontand get signage. One Hundred Acres of Heritage MainStreet receives Community Development Block Grantfunds through the City of Longview. Byrnes stated thatthe $15,000 matching grant played a big role in enablingthem to completely restore the original look of thebuilding. He added “It was a tremendous help with aproject of this size.” The Pickled Frog Grub and Pub is oneof two new restaurants opening in Downtown Longviewthis spring. Since 2008, when Longview was recertified asan Urban Main Street City, downtown has welcomed 4other new eateries. Downtown Longview is now morethan ever the place to be.
Is Your Event……happening in Longview or the immediate surrounding
area – Gregg County?…open to the public and not a members-only event?…one that has some interest to, or provides service for
visitors in Longview?…a fund raiser but NOT a commercial sales event or
have a commercial sales pitch? Then your event belongs on the Longview Community
Online Calendar at www.LongviewTexasEvents.com.Sponsored by the Longview Convention and VisitorsBureau, great pride is taken to keep the calendar up to datewith the latest information on upcoming events inLongview. If you find an event that interests you, all you needto do is click on that event which will bring a pop-upwindow with detailed information about that eventincluding dates, times, costs and any other pertinentinformation to the event.
As part of its ongoing efforts to promote the onlinecalendar of events, LCVB places print ads in local andregional publications. A strategically placed billboard atSpur 63 at Highway 80 encourages the public to explorethe online calendar and post their events, so that we mayhave a more complete listing of events in our area for ourtraveling guests as well as our local citizens.
A big advantage is the direct access the public has toplacing events on the Longview Community Calendar.People are urged to go to www.LongveiwTexasEvents.comto post their events.
