As we look forward to our 2016 sale, we must reflect back on the blessings of 2015. The cattle market was good and the rainfall abundant.

Margaret and I were truly blessed this past year as both our sons found beautiful and charming fiancés which we are thrilled to announce will be joining the Howell family this spring!

For your convenience, we have booked a block of rooms Friday, April 15th at the La Quinta Inn & Suites, 940-665-5700, located in Gainesville, Texas (Exit 501 off I-35). Ask for the Lone Star Angus room block. A reception will begin at 6:00 at the La Quinta, followed by complimentary Rohmers famous Chicken Fried Steaks from 7:00 to 8:45. Saturday morning Van Baize and Wel-lington State Bank will serve campfire coffee and a TexMex Breakfast at the sale facility and Dieter Bros. BBQ will serve lunch at 11:00 before the sale.

The 2016 Production Sale will be our best offering yet. From top to bottom, they are a very consistent set of animals. This year’s sale will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2016, at the Cooke County Fairgrounds in Gainesville, Texas.

Here at Lone Star Angus, we have been blessed by long-standing relationships and many custom-ers who show their continued trust by buying our bulls and females each year. STAR RATINGSLone Star Angus has provided a star rating system in this year’s book for assistance with your bull buying decisions.

CALVING EASE: Our star system for calving ease is designed to make purchasing bulls for first calf heifers and mature cows easier. I evaluated the EPDS: CED and BW, the pedigrees, actual birth weights and the physical appearance of the bulls to arrive at a rating.

Calves from 5 Star bulls should be very small and given normal delivery, there is not much chance of problems.

4 Star calving ease bulls are what we are trying to raise. These bulls will work great on first calf heifers and mature cows. We have avoided for generations rough boned AI sire and used sires that have nice little Angus heads. The shape of the calf is almost as important as the weight.

3 Star calving ease bulls could be used on large or crossbred first calf heifers but should be monitored closely.

2 Star calving ease bulls will work great on mature cows. I have never had a customer with a calving problem on mature cows. There is some correlation between higher birth weights and higher weaning weights.

1 Star Bulls. We do not raise bulls that cause calving difficulty in grown cows.

AMERICAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION GENOMIC ENHANCED EPDSCourtesy of the American Angus AssociationGenomic results are a way to enhance predictability of current selection tools, to achieve more accuracy on EPDs for younger animals, and to character-ize genetics for traits where it’s difficult to measure the animal’s own performance for the trait, such as carcass traits in breeding stock or maternal traits in bulls. With the investment in genomic technology, this means that in addition to the pedigree, performance and progeny information that are used in the calculation and reporting of Angus EPDs, genomic test results have also been incorporated into the EPD.

Genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs) are important because they make use of the results from the genomic, or DNA, test in addition to all other sources of information to provide added accuracy and reliability to the animal’s EPD. In fact, depending on the trait, GE-EPDs on unproven animals have the same amount of accuracy as if they had already sired 8-20 calves.

In the American Angus Association genetic evaluations, the genomic results are incorporated into the EPDs as a correlated trait. Through AGI research and development, a genetic relationship is calculated between the values obtained from the genomic test results and the phenotypic data at the Associ-ation. Typically there are two measures used to report the relationship of a genomic test and phenotype, the genetic correlation and percent of additive genetic variance accounted for by the test. These two measures are related, and if one is known, the other can be calculated. The genetic correlation is the square root of the percent additive genetic variance and, conversely, the percent additive genetic variance is the squared value of the genetic correla-tion. For example, if the genetic correlation between the genomic result and the phenotypic measure is .60, then the genomic result explains 36% of the additive genetic variance for that particular trait. Simply stated, the more genetic variance a test explains, the more impact it will have on your EPDs and accuracies for that trait. Across all traits, the genetic correlations that have been estimated between the high density genomic tests purchased through AGI and the American Angus Association’s phenotypic database effectively ranged from .60 to .70, except for milk and heifer pregnancy.

Genomic results are used as indicator traits in the evaluations to compute EPDs. Genomics do not completely describe the variation in the traits of interest. Breeders sometimes ask if it is no longer necessary to collect weights and measures (e.g., weaning weights, scan data, carcass measures). On the contrary, phenotypic measures collected by Angus breeders continue to be an important part in further development of improved genomic panels and the refinement of this technology over time, not to mention an important component in EPD calculation.

Genomic results are a way to enhance the current selection tools, to achieve more accuracy on predictions for younger animals, and to characterize ge-netics for traits where it’s difficult to measure the phenotype. If you want lots of muscle and proven consistent genetics Lot 5 will do the job. L462 showed explosive yearling growth as he went from a WW Ratio of 105 to a YW Ratio of 115. This Payweight 107S daughter, whose dam is a moderate framed, beautiful full sister to Advantage, showed growth from the start. She scored a WW Ratio of 127 and YW Ratio of 122. Females that look like this and have BW EPD of +1.5 and WW EPD of 76 are hard to find. Carcass merit is also present with CW EPD +55, Marb EPD +87 and Ribeye EPD +.96. A well rounded female whose genetics we plan to use heavily for years.

We are retaining one half interest in her first three flushes after she calves in December. Buyer receives the heifer, her calf, one half of the embryos from the three flushes and L478 bred back to the bull of your choice and delivered.

Our leadoff female, LONE STAR CONV LADY L455 is the best heifer out of our 2014 calf crop. Her flush brother sells as Lot 2 and is equally impressive. L455 is a Conversion daughter that traces back through Upward, New Frontier 095, Precision 1680 to the E&B 6807 Lady Traveler 61, one of the breeds great all time donors. This beautiful but stout heifer scored 50K results of WW 7, YW 3, CW 2 and RE 7. A $Beef of 174.47 and CW EPD of 63 adds to her appeal. The type of genetics you could start a herd with or improve any operation.

We flushed one yearling heifer this winter and it was L451. At 16 months of age she produced 17 good embryos and then bred on the first AI. We put all the embryos in and thus can sell full interest. Out of our Blackcap family, she shows calving ease, great marbling and fertility. Lots of eye appeal and quality in this heifer.

A different pedigree than most of our cattle but 4051 turned out to be just awesome. She is out of a first calf heifer L273, who we moved to the donor pen after we saw her first calf. 4051 was the heifer that caught our eye all along. A Dash daughter that traces back through Conversion to our Lone Star Standard Lady 804 donor that produced bulls Lot 1 and Lot 4 in our 2014 sale. Great genetics behind this heifer.

L319 is phenotypically much like her full sister that sells as Lot 36. This cow has also given us some quality heifers for the future. We have Conversion daughters that really catch your eye. Her progeny will highlight future sales. When flushed as a yearling heifer she made 14 good embryos.

LOT 57 – 26 ANGUS FIRST CALF HEIFERSThis is a truly fancy set of 26 Angus first calf heifers who calved in February and March. They have good Angus babies by their side and were home raised on the reputation Schumacher Ranch. Gene and his family only keep the really good ones and did a great job of developing these young cows. They are gentle and broke to cubes, a few have white on their faces.They are located 10 miles southwest of Gainesville, Texas.

LOT 58 – 70 ANGUS FIRST CALF HEIFERSClay Barrett is offering a set of 70 exceptional Angus first calf heifers. These cattle are one iron cattle and started calving December 1, 2015. On February 10, 2016 he had seventy calves on the ground and these are the pairs we are selling. By sale day, these calves will be between two and four and a half months old. They ran on wheat all winter and already have some big calves. Outstanding Angus bulls have been running with these cows since February 1, 2016, so they will start calving in November. Most of these heifers are probably bred and many will be several months along. There is a lot of value in these probable three in ones. They are very docile and broke to cubes, a handful have some white on their faces. They are located a few miles east of Witchita Fall, Texas.

LOT 58 – 25 ANGUS BRED HEIFERSEugene and Penny Raspotnik bring us an outstanding set of bred Angus heifers. These 25 home raised and hand picked heifers have been run-ning with a low birth weight Lone Star bull since December 19, 2015. They will start calving in late September and put calves on the ground at just the right time. These heifers are generations deep in quality genetics and front pasture cattle for sure. They will be pregnancy tested before the sale and safe in calf. They are very gentle with a few having white on their faces. They are located 20 miles east of McAlester, Oklahoma.

EPD Definitions

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in per-centage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in per-centage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.

Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny perfor-mance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size.

Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCE (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE. EPDs are enhanced by genomic profiles generated by GeneSeek and Zoetis, when applicable. $Value Indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.

All EPD data and references to it presented in this publication are based upon data provided by the American Angus Association as of March 5, 2016. EPD data is updated weekly by the American Angus Association and additional weight ratio data, ultrasound ratio data and genomic data from individuals that sell in this sale, their parents and their progeny will impact the EPD data for that animal.
