Summer Jobs For Youth

What is Summer Jobs For Youth (SJFY)?

SJFY is a Ministry of Child and Youth Services (MCYS) program that assists youth get valuable summer work experience, including those living in underserviced or priority neighbourhoods.

Youth receive job training, a paid employment placement from July to August, and post employment support.

Program provides 100% wage subsidy to employers who hire program participants at a rate of $10.25/hour

How does The Health Centre use SJFY?

Since 2010, the London InterCommunity Health Centre’s Child, Youth and Family team has provided meaningful, first time employment opportunities to 112 youth from Northeast London. Projects include: ‘Northeastolpoly’ Books to Theatre Art Is! Dynamic Dozen Northeast Green Team Grounds PlayEach project has provided opportunities for youth to engage with their community and gain important life and employment skills

SJFY Skills DevelopmentYouth participants gain valuable skills that they can take with them to future opportunities including:

Leadership skills Facilitation skills Interpersonal and communication skills Community involvement and engagement Health promotion Team work

Dynamic Dozen The Dynamic is a group of youth who

deliver dance performances across at various events and locations in London throughout summer as a Flash Mob Team and dance workshop facilitators

Since its simple beginnings, the Northeast Dynamic Dozen has performed for or worked with over 6500 Londoners of all ages.

Delivering messages about homelessness, inter-culturalism, diversity, LGBTQ issues, female empowerment, social isolation and promotion of healthy, active life styles, these youth have made positive and relevant contributions to their community

Grounds PlayIn 2012, a group called Grounds Play was created provide employment opportunities for youth where they could support their communities, engage with young children and provide free recreational programming in priority neighbourhoods.

Builds on youth participant strengths and interests to ‘play’ with their communities

Facilitates innovative, spontaneous programming throughout Northeast London and Argyle

Acts as a community partnership support group- coordinating and collaborating with existing community summer programs and initiatives

Now in it second year, Grounds Play has ‘played’ with 1216 children in the Carling, Huron Heights, East London and Argyle neighbourhoods.
