London - Ecology and Urban Regeneration
HOW SLR CAN HELP
SLR has a team of ecologists based in central London whospecialise in urban regeneration projects. Our team has a proventrackrecordindealingwiththespecificecologyissuesthatposeconstraints to the development of sites in London.
Furthermore, our staff hold licences to survey for key urban species including black redstarts and bats.
Our local team can undertake baseline surveys quickly, so that anypotential constraints can be designed out an early stage.
SLR has provided ecological advice to support the redevelopmentof numerous sites in London including Caspian Wharf, the LondonDocklands, One Tower Bridge and Hammersmith Embankment.
Our ecologists have prepared successful mitigation strategies forperegrine, black redstarts and bats at battersea Power Station, which prevented delays to the client’s schedule. Our team have also devised habitat management plans to manage the risk of birdstrike for projects around London City Airport, including theregeneration of Royal Albert Dock.
The ecology of urban sites presents a unique set of constraints and opportunities for developers. Furthermore, Londonregional and local planning policies that relate to ecology are particularly stringent.
Key features, such as street trees, open mosaic habitats and the River Thames may need to be considered in planningapplications and the potential presence of species, such as black redstarts, peregrine and bats may need specialist surveysand mitigation measures. Conversely, due to the lack of natural habitats on many sites prior to development, ecologicalenhancements, suchaslivingroofs, greenwallsandbatboxes, caneasilyresultinasignificantbenefittoecologyundertheEIA regulations and qualify for credits for BREEAM assessments.
