Welcome to LCM Live!Welcome to the first London College of Music Live programme of 2018. This is an exciting year for LCM as we continue to celebrate our 130 year anniversary.
In this programme we have a great range of events, including performances from some fantastic visiting artists including virtuoso pianists Natalyia Kartasheva, Sara Dominici and Massimo Perciaccante, internationally acclaimed violinist Tatevik Khachaturian and Her Majesty’s Coldstream Guards Band.
Naturally, our wonderful students will be showcasing their talent throughout the Spring months. Whether it’s pop performance at the increasingly popular LCM Sessions, an Evening of Jazz or a lunchtime concert in either the wonderful St Mary’s Church or our very own Lawrence Hall, there is something to suit all tastes.
Theatre lovers are spoilt for choice in February and March as we focus on the work of our graduating BA Actors, in a choice of four productions.

London College of Music was founded by G Augustus Holmes in 1887 at 54 Great Marlborough Street, with a mission to improve musical standards across the UK and to offer a range of qualifications to all ages, sexes and backgrounds. Its emphasis on accessibility was pioneering and unique in comparison with the other music colleges of the time.
The College began as an examining body, but a teaching element was created quite early in its history which provided facilities for part-time education. Many popular classes were established including Orchestra, Operatic Classes and Ladies’ Choir. Its
courses grew so much in popularity that within 7 years of its founding, the College had moved twice in search of more space, finally settling at 47 Great Marlborough Street where it remained until 1991. By 1891 the College had 4,000 exam candidates. By 1894 it had 340 centres in America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Brasil, Chile and West Indies.

“....they (LCM) had popularised music in many places which otherwise it would never have reached. They had not only helped those who sought to enter the profession, but had raised the standard amongst those who did not seek the profession, but wished to study music for its own sake. They all knew the immense refining power of music, and the London College of Music was doing a great and good work in spreading a love of it, thus bringing ‘the greatest happiness to the greatest number.’” Sir Vincent Kennett-Barrington, Patron 1894
The College continued to prosper with the support of notable examiners such as Dr W J Westbrook in the late Victorian period, also of Dr W H Longhurst, an organist of Canterbury Cathedral and H Wharton-Wells in the 1930s and 1940s. Philip Dore, an organist renowned particularly for his performance of the music of J S Bach, was also an examiner and in the 1950s gave a series of lectures and recitals at the College.
With the advent of Dr William Lloyd Webber, LCM began to enjoy a ’Golden Age’, during which time it became widely recognised in the music world as one of ‘the five’ London Music Colleges. The examinations department was re-organised and Dr Lloyd Webber pioneered the introduction of exams for electronic organ. Improvements were made to the building and a new organ was installed thanks to the generosity of the Rank Trust.

On Dr Lloyd Webber’s untimely death in 1982, John McCabe became Director and further improved the status of LCM. His tenure saw the centenary of LCM and a concert at the Barbican with the distinguished pianist John Lill and cellist Julian Lloyd Webber as soloists. Some major building works to enlarge the space took place, as well as the establishment of Music Technology and Film Music courses.Owing to lack of investment, the merger with the Polytechnic of West London in 1991 was inevitable, but at the same time it ensured that LCM was able to prosper and acquire what it lacked at Great Marlborough Street – increased space and facilities.
130 years on, LCM is the largest specialist music and performing arts institution in the UK. It offers an impressive range of innovative courses, respected worldwide and delivered with creativity and passion in state-of-the-art facilities. Its teaching staff still work as successful and prominent performers, creators and composers within the wider music industry, bringing career-relevant and cutting-edge experience to their courses.
Through London College of Music Examinations, LCM offers graded and diploma qualifications in music, drama and communication in 51 countries and 898 exam centres across the globe.
LCM boasts a thriving Junior College, a performing arts school for children and young people at all stages of musical learning.

Its direction may not be clear in all particulars, but the LCM is still alive and in its new setting has perhaps a greater, if different, potential than ever before.” So said John Chapman, a former Warden of LCM, on the move to Ealing in 1991. And so the LCM has successfully reached its 130th birthday in a robust state, with much to be proud of in its history and ready to meet new challenges.

The Gondoliers tells the story of two charming Venetian gondoliers, Giuseppe and Marco, who are informed that due to an error of identity when they were young boys, one of them is the heir to the throne of Barataria. They are delighted with the situation and agree to share the responsibilities of governing their new kingdom until it can be ascertained which of them is which, but matters are complicated when the Duke and Duchess of Plaza Toro reveal that their beautiful daughter, Casilda, was married to the future king as an infant. The problem? Giuseppe and Marco are both newly married to the contadine Tessa and Gianetta, and Casilda is in love with her father’s attendant, Luiz. Since its premiere in 1889, The Gondoliers has delighted audiences with its memorable score by Sullivan, and its political satire, cleverly tucked into Gilbert’s witty plotline.

The Junior Chefs Academy is sponsored by Harrison Catering, and is supported by the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts and the Craft Guild of Chefs. The courses are aimed at Year 10 and 11 students, and provide a great start for those interested in a career in food and culinary arts. The courses last for 10 weeks, and are delivered on Saturday mornings from 9.30am to 12.30pm (Cake and Bake – Thursdays 5 – 8pm). All classes cost £10 per session.

In Orwell’s nightmarish dystopian society, Winston Smith is employed in the Ministry of Truth. His job is to help constantly falsify history, so that the almighty Party - personified by the omniscient Big Brother - is always seen as infallible and all-powerful. But when he’s handed a note that says ‘I love you’ by a woman he hardly knows, Winston decides to risk everything to discover the truth about the way that his society is secretly manipulated and controlled. Twins Sebastian and Viola are shipwrecked on the coast of Illyria, separated and believing each other to be dead. Beside herself with grief, Viola disguises herself as a boy and goes into the service of the Duke Orsino. The Duke, madly in love with the Countess Olivia, sends Viola to woo on
his behalf. What could possibly go wrong? Olivia falls in love with the cross-dressed page while Viola falls deep and fast for Orsino. Meanwhile, mischievous servants play painful pranks at each other’s expense. Heady chaos ensues as griefs, loves and deep human confusions collide, but fear not! Sweet resolution wins the day as friends, twins and lovers are reunited. Expect cross-dressing, hijinks and bittersweet hilarity in Shakespeares timeless, soulful and irrepressible comedy.

After married man John Proctor decides to break off his affair with his young lover, Abigail Williams, she leads other local girls in an occult rite to wish death upon his wife, Elizabeth. When the ritual is discovered, the girls are brought to trial. Accusations begin to fly, and a literal witch hunt gets underway. Before long, Elizabeth is suspected of witchcraft, and John’s attempt to defend her only makes matters worse.

An Insight Into BA Acting ProgrammingChoosing a season of plays for a graduating year of BA Acting students is a challenging and exciting opportunity. Not only must you find plays with the requisite amount of substantial roles, you also need to select works that enable the students to showcase their skills whilst allowing them to continue to develop as actors in training. In choosing the plays this year I also sought to find material that reflected the individual passions of this particular group.
During their second year, a large number of the students showed a keen interest in political discourse. George Orwell’s 1984, adapted by Matthew Dunster, with its examination of how a population can be manipulated through the use of propaganda, resonates in a political climate where we are debating the interference of state-sponsored Russian social-media
profiles in democratic elections and the rise of ‘fake news’ - and therefore seemed an apt choice for this politically-engaged year group.
A passion for Feminism also runs through the backbone of this cohort – which made Jessica Swale’s Nell Gwynn an exciting choice. This show, which won the Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2016 serves the students well, as many have a keen interest in new writing.
Finally, in taking on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and The Crucible by Arthur Miller, we have given the students the opportunity to explore some of the greatest roles in the English-speaking theatre - and allow them to pursue the ambitions that many of them share: to work as classical actors.’

LCM Junior CollegeWith its foundations rooted in the formal conservatoire tradition, LCM Junior College has a history of 60 years, and has since grown into a diverse, versatile and forward thinking musical community. Every Saturday during term time over 100 students come through our doors and enter a thriving, inspirational learning environment whilst receiving tuition by some of the very best teachers and professional musicians in the world. Weekend learning means that our students avoid the disturbance of their school studies, and has the added benefit that brings likeminded young people together to enrich themselves in an area of study that they enjoy. For fun or serious intentions, from beginner to advanced, LCM is a music college that believes in music for all, and will endeavour to support parents find the most suitable musical route for their child.
Performance is at the heart of the London College of Music community and particularly so for Junior College students, who perform in a number of concerts throughout the year. These performances provide our students with the opportunity to build their confidence and showcase their talents.
Students at LCM Junior College are encouraged to take graded examinations with our graded examination board – LCM Examinations, which delivers over 60,000 exams per year worldwide. LCM graded examinations are part of the National Qualification Network, which means that students gain valuable UCAS points along their musical pathway.
Those who achieve an LCM grade 8 in their chosen instrument, will receive an automatic practical offer when applying for BMus (Hons) Performance or BMus (Hons) Performance and Recording at undergraduate level.

Bursaries available• Ealing Music and Film Festival have very
kindly supported Junior College with funding for places in our samba group. There are some places still available.
• Bursaries are available for instruments, fees and sheet music purchases through the Grocers’ Access Fund for those wishing to pursue lessons at Junior College. The award will be made on the basis of academic merit, potential to achieve and financial need.
