London Calling 2015
UK Ultimate Open & Women’s Tour 2
TD & Contact
The tournament desk will be set up in the clubhouse all weekend - please see the map below.
If you need anything at all over the weekend, please call Benji, or find someone nearby with a walkie-talkie.
TD: Benji Heywood 07896 919900 [email protected]
TD: Si Hill 07802 311298 [email protected]
Transport
The venue is UCL Sports Ground, Bell Lane, London Colney AL2 1BZ
There are a couple of transport issues that have been highlighted:
- Much of St Albans town centre will be closed off or busy all weekend. There is a pilgrimage on Saturday and a street festival on Sunday, so it’s best to avoid the town centre if possible.
- The train route from St Pancras to St Albans City is being replaced with a bus service. It's probably best avoided - you can go from King's Cross to either Potters Bar or Hatfield instead. And St Albans Abbey appears unaffected also. The Britdisc hive-mind has settled on Potters Bar as the best option, but you might want to look into it and make your own decision.
- Apparently you no longer pay at a barrier if using the Dartford Crossing - you need to pay online within 24 hours after going through. www.gov.uk/pay-dartford-crossing-charge. It is also apparently possible to pay cash at "Payzone" stores. The site at www.payzone.co.uk lists some "local" to the tournament, if you select: Store Locator -> Transport & Ticketing -> Dart Charge -> AL2 1BZ
Further transport information can be seen on the event page - http://www.ukultimate.com/londoncalling
This tournament will be largely paperless. Please stop by the TD desk first thing to pick up your team disc, water and any late changes to this information – but we will NOT provide paper copies of the schedule or captain’s pack. They will be available through your smart phones etc., and if you require paper copies please print and bring your own. We WILL have a limited number of copies for non-UK teams who may not have easy internet access on their phones.
Any changes and late information (e.g. fields out of use due to damage, or adjustments to the schedule) will be communicated via twitter on @UKUltimateEvent, with the hashtag #ukut2. If you cannot easily check twitter, please swing by the desk regularly!
Parking
All ultimate parking has been assigned to a field at the top of the site for the whole weekend. You will be guided in by marshals – please do as they advise as promptly as possible. Please CAR SHARE when possible to reduce congestion.
Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you:
a) Park in the tarmac car park b) Pause to drop off players before parking – even if you’re late, go to the parking spot and then all get out
This sounds draconian, but with the size of the tournament there is a real risk of traffic backing up sufficiently far as to reach the M25 motorway. We’ve staggered the start times to alleviate the pressure a little, but PLEASE park promptly and don’t mess about.
If you genuinely wish to drop off players (e.g. taxis, or non-players dropping people off and then leaving) you will be filtered into a different area. Mention your intent to the marshals and they will direct you.
Five Ultimate Tent and Hangout Tent
The lovely folks from Five Ultimate will be on site selling a range of clothing, and also no doubt having lots of fun. You’ll find them in the vicinity of pitch 6, and you’ll also find there a Hangout Tent with lots of furniture which will be a good place to base yourselves when not playing, or when eating. The refectory (where the tournament office is) has been redecorated and is not a completely suitable place for hundreds of muddy Frisbee players to relax – so we’ve provided an option near the Five tent and the show pitch.
Watford Football Club
Watford’s main training pitch is in front of the refectory. WE MUST NOT go into any out-of-bounds areas, for any reason, including ‘just nipping over to retrieve a disc’. Leave it, and we’ll get it later in the day. There’s little reason why anything would end up in that area anyway, but if it does that is not a reason to go in there.
Camping, showers and toilets
As we have previously said, camping at this venue is not free! There is a flat charge of £10 per tent for the weekend, regardless of how many nights you are staying. You will need to buy your camping pass from the TD desk when you arrive on Friday night or during the day on Saturday (try not to come at the end of a game as the staff will be busy collecting scores and you might face a small delay). Both tournament staff and security will be walking around the camp-site ensuring that you have your pass. UKU are being charged directly by the venue based on the number of tents they count in the field, so please help make our lives easier and sort your passes out as quickly as possible.
Camping is located on the east side of the venue. We would ask that camper vans are left parked in the car park and not taken through to the camping area. We would also stress that BBQ’s and camp fires of any nature are strictly forbidden due to the proximity of the M25. The showers are located in the main changing blocks. Block A has male changing and toilets, Blocks B & C have female changing and toilets. The showers will be open from approximately 7:00am each day and will close late evening.
We have provided some additional portable toilets (marked on the map) since we have so many players this year – please use the ones in the building when you’re near it (they won’t fill up!) but obviously the portaloos will help when you’re further away.
Please note: Please stick to the paths around the changing rooms and don’t cut across verges – some fences have been removed this year, but do still stick to the path.
Dogs
Dogs (except guide dogs) are not allowed on site at this venue. We would ask all players – and any non-playing spectators you might bring – not to bring dogs to the tournament as the ground staff will not allow them on any part of the site.
Eating and drinking
The refectory is expected to be open all day serving breakfast then continuing with hot food throughout the day. You MUST take your boots off when entering that area – the refectory has been significantly spruced up and is run by Watford Football Club, and they will not appreciate us making a mess. We have provided the Hangout Tent with furniture near pitch 6 where players can eat and drink the food they have purchased; we do not intend to use the refectory area as our main hangout area this year.
They have a good range of hot and cold drinks as well as a fully licensed bar. If you are looking for something different, there is a footpath to Sainsbury’s shown on the map. Please note that there is no pedestrian access to the McDonalds on the other side of the M25 – you must get in your car if you wish to head there.
You can also head into St Albans where there are a wide range of restaurants and pubs to entertain you, but remember that the centre is busy/closed for various events over the weekend.
Water
Teams will be provided with some additional 5L bottles of water to supplement their own water supply – a total of 10L for most teams, and 15L for the C tour teams on the most distant fields. These can be collected on arrival. They will be labelled with your team name so that should you choose to refill them you will know which are yours. We very much do NOT recommend just grabbing any unmarked half-empty bottle and using it as drinking water.
See here for more info: http://www.ukultimate.com/story/water_provision_uku_events
There are loads of taps on site – if you’re worried about having enough water, please bring more containers with you. The legalities of the situation are such that you can fill as many water bottles as you like, but we as an organisation cannot refill containers and distribute them to you – believe us when we say that we would love to provide pitch-side water.
We have organised 2 sets of multi-tap extensions; these don’t stretch to the further pitches of course, but they should alleviate any queueing for water. And there are 2 single taps as well. All water points are in the vicinity of the changing rooms and are marked on the maps below.
Rubbish and Recycling
There are bins placed around the fields in pairs. You will always find a recycling bin next to a general waste bin. Please use them. The bins are for mixed recycling – paper, plastic, cans and glass. Please make sure to put food or other waste in the general bins.
Please pick up your rubbish when you finish a game. If you can’t identify your rubbish amongst that of your team-mates or opponents, why not just pick up some of it and put that in a bin?! Thanks!
Spirit Score Reporting
We will once again be using a Google Forms approach to SotG score collection. For non-UK teams, who may have issues with roaming charges on phones, spirit scores can be entered in person at the TD desk.
All spirit scores for UK teams will be entered through these links:
Open division: http://goo.gl/EJ9H8L
Women’s division: https://goo.gl/U1ipqi
You should be able to access the form on your smartphone (or one of your team-mates’ phones – some models seem to struggle more than others) and facilities will be available at the TD desk to input your scores if you really can’t get it to work.
Please enter scores as promptly as you are able – in particular, we expect to award a spirit trophy based on the results that have been entered before the presentation. If you fail to enter your scores on the day, it is of course still worth entering them later as it improves the feedback your opponents receive, but if you can enter them on the day it would be far better.
(If you end up, a week after the tournament, with the highest spirit – but someone else took the trophy – that’s hard luck I’m afraid. Take it up with the teams who submit late!)
Scoreboard Names
Have you ever sat there at seven-all and tried to work out which side of the scoreboard belongs to which team? We are testing a solution this weekend, involving giving your team a foamboard team badge that will Velcro on to the scoreboard below the numbers and solve this problem forever. Please keep yours with you from game to game, and give us some feedback on how well the system is working – this is partly a test for Worlds, but it is also something we’d love to extend to all out Tour events.
Due to the late dropouts and having to rewrite the schedule, we’ve only had time to do them for the Women’s division on this occasion – sorry! Let us know if you like it and we’ll expand it in future.
Medical
We will have an ambulance with crew, some additional first aiders, and 3 physios on site. They will be based in the changing block, and if the weather is OK there will be a secondary first aid station out on the pitches. If you require assistance for an injury at the pitches, please contact the TD, or one of the event team, who will be able to radio for first aid assitance. However, should you need them, below are details of the closest hospitals.

Schedule
The schedule will be published on the link below, and as previously mentioned, we will NOT provide a paper copy of this for all teams.
Please note there are differing timings for the C Tour compared to other divisions
This schedule will be updated with full scores, and with the upcoming matches in bracket play - hopefully after each round of play. If there are people wishing to follow your progress remotely, this is a good place to look.

The schedule will also be available as a pdf (for printing) from the event webpage on http://www.ukultimate.com/londoncalling, though of course this version will not update throughout the weekend.
Please note that WFDF Game Advisers will be in use for selected games during the weekend.
Show game
As usual, we have lined up an exciting show game for the Saturday evening. The full GB Open squad will take on France Open on pitch 6 at 6.30 on pitch 6 – don’t miss it!
