1st Senate District race will be contested

The Senatorial Legislative Committee has a candidate. Retired firefighter

Thomas R. Holston will be running for the Virginia Senate First District seat.

As per Jeff Ryer of the Republican Legislative Committee and State Central

Committee member, “this will be Holston’s first run for public office.”

During the Newport News City Committee meeting held in June, Holston said

his final decision to enter the race was over the events that occurred in Florida a

few weeks ago. Holston also discussed his concerns with the decrease of public

employee benefits and the educational crisis in Virginia.

The first senatorial district encompasses all of the City of Williamsburg, most

of the City of Newport News and parts of James City County, York County, the

City of Suffolk and the City of Hampton. The seat is vacant as of April 4, 2016,

due to the death of John C. Miller.

TRAVIS FAIN AND DAVE RESS SHAD PLANK Permission was given by the Daily Press to share this Shad Plank article. Political rules for military, federal employees strict Since Hampton Roads is a military town with plenty of federal employees, an AP story reporting federal agencies are stepping up efforts to let federal employees know the rules about political activity got Shad Plank wondering what the rules actually are. A federal law called the Hatch Act sets the rules for executive branch departments and agencies. And the Office of Special Counsel, an independent federal law enforcement agency, says requests for training at all levels of government are surging, the AP reports. Basically, the Hatch Act says no political activity on the job. Away from work, federal employees can voice support for or opposition to candidates (even at rallies, as long as they don’t mention their government position). Federal employees can give to campaigns, but they can’t ask others to contribute. The Defense Department’s rules for members of the armed forces on active duty are stricter. While active duty personnel can give to campaigns, they cannot participate in partisan political fundraising activities, rallies, conventions or campaigns. That ban, DoD says, is “without respect to uniform or inference or appearance of official sponsorship, approval or endorsement.” But simply attending an event as a spectator is OK. Active duty military personnel can’t publish partisan political articles, letters or endorsements, though they can write letters to the editor as long as they make clear that their views are personal views and not official ones. They can’t speak before a partisan political gathering, including any gathering that promotes a partisan political party, candidate or cause. They can’t perform clerical or other duties for a partisan political committee or candidate during a campaign, on an election day or after an election day during the process of closing out a campaign. They can’t march in a partisan political parade or display a large political sign, banner or poster (as distinguished from a bumper sticker on a private vehicle). Fain can be reached at [email protected] or 757-525-1759; Ress at [email protected] or 757-247-4535. Read The Shad Plank blog at www.shadplank.com.

Great job Isle of Wight Republican Committee

Marty Williams at the Smithfield Olden Days Festival.

Isle of White – “Olden Days” event

Begun in the 1980's, Olden Days has been one of the most popular community events to take place annually in Downtown Historic Smithfield Featuring crafters and artisans, antique cars, military vehicles, a ghost walk, live music, “Kids, Bike and Pet Parade” This yearly event has been an opportunity for the the Isle of Wight Republican Committee to hand

out literature for Senator Tommy Norment, Congressional Republican Nominee Marty Williams and

Delegate Rick Morris. As well as a prime location for “Voter Registration”.

Within a few years, Isle of Wight Chairman Bill Coburn and the members of the Isle of Wight

Republican committee have increased their presence throughtout the communities and towns of the

Isle of Wight County.
