Purpose

To gain an understanding of the demographics of the students who attend the leadership

LOGIC program

Synthesize some of the major themes and sub-themes that students pulled from their

experience at LOGIC

Determine the effectiveness of the facilitators and how they could improve for next year

Draw conclusions on the effectiveness of our marketing strategies and provide

recommendations for next year’s marketing team

Background

About

o Leadership LOGIC is a two-day overnight leadership development program

through the Center for Leadership and Social Change and the FSU Reservation

and is of no cost to students. All FSU students interested in opportunities to

acquire, practice, reflect, and apply your personal and individual knowledge,

skills, and values are encouraged to attend. The overnight leadership development

program is held at FSU’s reservation, where the group will spend most of the

weekend outside engaging in hands-on exercises that apply leadership theories.

History

o LOGIC began in 2005 as Lead-ins at the Rez to teach students about the social

change model of leadership. It was formed as a collaborative partnership between

the Center for Leadership and Social Change and FSU’s Re servation. Lead-ins at

the Rez eventually evolved into the Leadership LOGIC program.

Methods & Sample

The data and information collected below was acquired through the use of satisfaction

assessment that was handed out at the end of a LOGIC session for the students to fill out. The

assessment was created in order to gauge the level of learning and what students gained from

each of the LOGIC sessions. The assessment consisted of 6 questions. A collection of the

questions asked to the students can be found in Appendix A.

Below is a collection of data that is representative of all 77 participants of this year’s

2012-2013 LOGIC programs. Demographics include the break down between male and females,

ethnicity, year at Florida State University, prior involvement with Center programs, majors, and

major marketing tools that attracted them. Representative demographic data shown in the graphs

below.

Challenge Course

Its incredible how well a group of pretty much strangers worked together to complete

them. I loved my team because we put everything aside and remained focused on out

purposes and actions.

They were a hands-on way to experience and demonstrate our individual leadership.

I could experience directly how to collaborate with team members to achieve common

goals

… It helped to listen from team members how they apply activities to reality.

The Seminole Walk course was the activity that I gained the most from because it allowed

me to see that it is okay that I like to watch, listen, and help, more than acting first.

It showed me that people can still be leaders with their support and that people really

need support to keep going.

It taught me about my own strengths as well as some very valuable skills.

Trusting others, communication, team work and encouragement are essential tools for a

group effort to succeed.

It was the first time in a long time that I was weak in a group. It humbled me and showed

me that even leaders still need to be led.

We actually strategized at the end.

I was able to apply my written definition of leadership.

Trust Activities

Really good because it has a good reminder that vulnerability isn’t a terrible thing and

sometimes it’s important to reveal a little more about yourself than you’re initially

comfortable with.

Even though we all have different experiences, we do actually have a lot in common as

well and we want many of the same things

[Sherpa Walk]…it made me realize how much trust is a vital part of being a leader.

Realized that trust has to be put in other even if you’re not sure where something is

heading.

It [Win as much as you can] revealed just how much collaboration, cooperation, trust,

forethought could have benefitted everyone in the end.

Values Activities

The activity helped me to learn and remember again my values.

I think that really helped me to move forward staying grounded and remembering what I

care about.

…the three circles helped me visualize how three groups interact with one another, as

well as how the C’s fit in the circles.

I used to think that leadership just belonged to individual but it gave another thought.

It was interesting to see how everything fell into this ecosystem to make change happen

Diversity Activities

I was taken aback by what people think in general about specific kind of people.

I think it is important to embrace diversity and to discuss these topics head-on.

It was also a shock to me of all the stereotypes that go unsaid or are thought to be

natural.

Opened my eyes into how we negatively stereotype people without knowing it can be

wrong.

Trust

I learned that trusting people (even ones I just met) is an important part of leadership

…vulnerability isn’t a terrible thing and sometimes it’s important to reveal a little more

Personal Development

I never take the time to really reflect on leadership, this program helped me pick out what

I need to work on

I didn’t have many chances to share ideas about leadership before. I can think about

real leadership by sharing and listening to other students’ opinions

I know that I am a leader simply because I took the initiative to come here to learn how I

can better develop my leadership skills

I understand leadership better in the aspect of trusting and listening to others for input

My definition of a leader has expanded from a person who a title to person who inspires

Yes I was always afraid to speak out in groups since I’m an international student but

doing the weekend I was actually heard which actually made me feel confident

Social Change Model

The Social Change Model certainly put things into perspective and structured my life

I could think about more deeply about leadership. Especially, it was helpful that we

thought about “Who is NOT a leader”

I feel that I don’t necessarily have to be the leader to make a good suggestion or an idea

Yes, it’s good to know that I don’t have to be an extrovert to be a leader

J ust because you aren’t in a position of high status, doesn’t mean you aren’t and can’t be

a leader

Learning the 7 C’s really gave me terms to apply to concepts that I already knew and it

served to r emind me of those ideas and why they’re important

Page 16: LOGIC Assessment Project

Group Dynamics

I understand that leadership is a process that requires not only one, but everyone who

has a common goal and purpose

I learned that as I lead I’m not the only person responsible for the succ ess of my group

Everyone can contribute and they all have different ways of leading

By seeing the various dynamics present at this program, it made me realize that everyone

is essential and has a part in the leadership activities

The best leaders share their beliefs with their teammates

It was visible to me that I do care about others, and I would step in to help whenever is

needed. In the challenge I did actions automatically for the group safety

Personal Leadership Recognition

Yes, of course. I believe I found the leader inside me (sounds cheesy) because in some

situation I came up with strategies as well as others did and became a follower also

I feel I have a better understanding of myself in relationship to leadership. I understand

it is okay to be a leader and not be the loudest person. Sometimes a leader can just

support the group.

I believe I want to be more involved in leadership than on the sideline of life

I now am confident in the sense I can call myself a leader when I take charge and build

positive outcomes

Greatest Student Learning

All participants were asked to identify what their biggest take away from the weekend

was. This question was asked to determine the major learning themes and sub-themes that

students gained at LOGIC. Table 3 below represents the major themes and sub-themes

Table 3 : What was the biggest take-away or learning from this weekend? Representativecomments from major themes included below.

*Challenge Tool box is a metaphor used by challenge course facilitators in which learning gained from the ropes isconsidered a “tool” to be placed in the student’s “tool box” so that they may recall this learning whenever thestudent thinks of the activity. For example, recalling the Wild Woozy activity might help the student recall theimportance of trust as their “tool”

Running Head: LEADERSHIP LOGIC ASSESSMENT PROJECT 18

Working in Groups

…communication among the group makes the challenge easier to realize.

Collaborating with each other made me feel part of a group.

[We] have faults and all have pride, but we all have hearts

I learned that everyone needs support and really a person never accomplishes things on

their own as you shouldn’t want to

Learning to trust and support one another when there is a common purpose

When people come together for a common goal, anything is possible

I now understand the importance of having good communication skills and being open

minded to the ideal of others

Together we achieve more

Sometime we get wrapped up on being the only one that can do something but there are

others in the team who you have to give a chance

Social Change Model

A leader is also a follower

…that leadership is a process and also that being a leader also requires you to be a

follower

Learning that Social Change Model and learning that there are tools and resources to

help me with leading

You can lead by following! Sometimes, it is your turn to submit to another’s lead

Leadership is a collaborative process and everyone has something important to offer

Page 19: LOGIC Assessment Project

Running Head: LEADERSHIP LOGIC ASSESSMENT PROJECT 19

The idea that we must focus on individual, group and community dynamics in order to

influence change in a positive way is so true!

Learning the 7c’s

I learned that everyone has the potential to become a leader and make a change in their

community

Self-Awareness

The different ways one can be a “real” leaders

I need to make more time for some of the values I consider important, such as leisure

time.

That I need to watch my energy level. Friday night I was engaged and actively

participating, but Saturday I was tired and too laid back

I also learned a lot about my own strengths as an observer

The biggest take away I have from this weekend are the tools that a good leader has and

ways to be effective leader overall

Relationship

The biggest take-away were the relationships created through reflections of obstacle

courses. It’s nice to know you are not standing alone

The biggest take away was the friends that I made since I know they’ll be future leaders

give people a chance to express themselves and to build trust among a group

Importance of Reflection

I have learned that I need to take a step back and analyze what is going on in order to

make the best decisions as a leader.

Reflection should not be forgotten when we are doing things. Without reflection we don’t

process things fully

LOGIC Facilitators

Students were asked to identify the level of challenge that the facilitators provided the

LOGIC participants and ways facilitators could improve. This question was asked in order to

determine if the level of difficulty for the activities was appropriate as well as how facilitators

could improve for the next session. Table 4 below represents the collected quantitative responses

from the students.

Themes and Subthemes Number of ResponsesYes 68No 6

Did not address question 3Table 4: Did the facilitators challenge you this weekend? Any thoughts on how they canimprove or grow? (Please include your small group facilitator’s name if you have specificfeedback for them)

Analysis of the responses shows that the level of challenge was enough for the

participants. On the rare response that a student felt that they were not challenge, responses

gravitated to the thought that the participants had done leadership retreats before and have seen

these activities before. On 3 responses, students did not address the question.

In addressing the part of the question involving how the facilitator could improve, many

brought up the idea that the facilitators should be “more involved” w ith the group discussions.

Examples that were provided included the facilitator providing their own reflections and how it

Page 21: LOGIC Assessment Project

relates to the activity that they experienced. Many participants asked if it were possible for the

facilitators to give more examples of their experiences and not ask as many questions. In one

response the participant would have liked the facilitator to challenge them more.

On an overall note, the facilitators were rated very highly. Many participants really

enjoyed their facilitator. They mentioned how their facilitator challenged them to think outside

the box and see different perspectives. Participants lauded the facilitators’ enthusiasm and

concern for the group as a whole.

Program Recommendation to Peers

Students were asked if they would recommend this program to a friend and why. The

question was asked to determine if they would recommend the program to others, generating

word of mouth marketing for the program. Table 5 is the representative quantitative data.

Themes and SubthemesNumber ofResponses

Yes 77

No 0Table 5: Would you recommend this program to a friend? Why?

All students responded positively to this question in that they would recommend this

program to their peers. Many participants cited that this program can be beneficial to many

students on campus and that it is a great way to meet new people on Florida States’ campus.

They also made mention that the LOGIC program provided them with a much clearer

understanding of leadership and how it influences their daily lives. Below is a sample of

representative quotes of what participants had to say:

I feel like this program was a very pleasant experience that I learned a lot from and the

methods used to bring up discussion were very affective

Page 22: LOGIC Assessment Project

Running Head: LEADERSHIP LOGIC ASSESSMENT PROJECT 22

Yes I would recommend this to a friend who is willing to take on a challenge of becoming

a leader in any kind of way.

It was a very helpful time for me to think about myself

100% yes! I met so many great people and learned so much about leadership and the

Social Change Model

I would definitely recommend this to a friend because it was a great learning experience

and helped me recognize what I need to work on to be an effective leader

This program was more fun than I imagined. It gave me a new experience that would

probably be unrivaled by other leadership experiences I have had

Conclusions and Future Recommendations

The data from this assessment shows that the LOGIC program is one the strongest

leadership development programs that the Center has to offer and serves as a stepping stone for

students to enter and get involved in other Center programs. The data shows that LOGIC is one

of the students first involvements (see demographic data), and hence fulfilling one of the

programs goals. The data also shows that LOGIC is the Center’s largest leadership development

program, with 77 participants this year, and plenty of room to continue to grow. With a stronger

marketing push from next year, LOGIC can easily reach the 100 participants range.

Much of the student learning revolved around the social change model of leadership,

accomplishing another goal. Many students cited that they had a better understanding of the 7

C’s and that leadership is not a position, but a process. Many of them came to the realization that

the being a leader also means being a follower as well. Other learning revolved around the

participant’s self -awareness; how they interact in a group, their energy levels, self-confidence,

personal leadership potential recognition, and diversity awareness. Many of the participants

Page 23: LOGIC Assessment Project

8/13/2019 LOGIC Assessment Project

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/logic-assessment-project 23/26

Running Head: LEADERSHIP LOGIC ASSESSMENT PROJECT 23

loved the challenge course aspect of the program and many cited that they had learned a lot from

the course.

Future recommendations for the program include: having a much stronger marketing

push for the program. Word of mouth seems to be a strong marketing tool for many of the

participants, as many heard from a family member, friend, advisor, etc., however that may limit

the diversity of the participant pool to have more Center students than general body students. A

list of marketing strategies was created by the 2012-2013 co-coordinators; it is recommended

that the co-coordinators and advisors use that list to enhance their marketing and branding

potential. Flyers were a useful tool in the marketing strategies, on particular with housing. Many

housing students that attended LOGIC did so because of the flyers that were disbursed at each of

the residence halls, including the residence life office. A promotional video may also be useful

for marketing LOGIC. A collection of photos and resides in the Center share drive that would be

useful in creating the promotional video.

It is also recommended that the facilitators receive more in-depth training on topics such

as facilitations. This would facilitate the debriefing process more and allow the facilitators to

learn how to connect the social change model to the different activities throughout the retreat. It

may also be prudent to develop a collection of different activities that facilitators would be able

to use during LOGIC so that the same activities aren’t always being used.

Overall, the LOGIC program a very versatile program, advisors and graduate advisorsshould continue to look into way to continuously develop the program and its content. One

example might be to look into how the Social Change Model presentation is taught and how it

could be made more active and engaging among the participants.
