Swimming CarnivalI would like to congratulate all of the students on their wonderful efforts at the Swimming Carnival. By all staff and students accounts, the twilight carnival continues to be a great success with wonderful participation not only by the students but also the staff. The house point score was 815 Castlereagh, 392 Macquarie, 545 Hastings and 696 Namoi. This means that the Champion House was Castlereagh. Many thanks to Mr Rae for all of his efforts in coordinating such a large carnival and for the PE faculty for their assistance. Given that Mr Rae is such a staunch Castlereagh House Patron, it looks like we will be hearing from Mr Rae for the next 12 months about how wonderful Castlereagh is. Congratulations to all the Age Champions and record breakers. See details and photos on page 4 in this issue of Logbook. End Of Year Staff Development DaysWith the advent of the new School Plan, the staff of Oxley High School will need to undertake periodic review of the plan’s implementation. To do this we have changed the last 2 days of the year into 4 after school sessions across terms 1, 2, 3 and 4. The result of this strategy should ensure that the school is more flexible in its approach of modifying and maximising student results across the board in areas of assessment such as NAPLAN and the HSC, improving staff professionalism and training and ensuring that the overall goals of the school are communicated with students, teachers, parents and carers. Enrolment Enquiries for 2017We have seen a surge in the numbers of enrolment enquiries over the last 18 months, which now has grown into a significant number of enrolment applications for Year 7 in 2017. I would consider that this is very early in the process. As a result of this I would advise all parents and carers thinking about enrolling their child at Oxley High School to make some serious considerations about approaching the school early. We have only limited places in the school given that the ceiling of the school is set at 1000 students.

“I would encourage all families to speak with their children about supporting their child and in cases where there is frustration in the actions of others, encourage your child to report the matter before it becomes a significant issue.”Simon Bartlett-Taylor, Principal.

To indicate the enrolment pressure in 2016 we currently have 940 students. As a guide another enrolment of 180 Year 7 students would leave the school with approximately only 30 places left in the whole school in 2017. An early indication of interest by families will be greatly appreciated and assist us in maximising the enrolment of our future students.

School RulesGiven that we are still very early in the year, I would like to take the opportunity to remind families about the school rules. Initially I would like to draw your attention to the policies and procedures set out by the Department of Education. These are consistent and succinctly spell out all Public School Principals’ responsibilities. Generally you can consider that we have some simple rules around safety, uniform, behaviour and students completing work and, for the most part the teachers will explain rules and where appropriate follow them up with a designated sanction. For example, wearing uniform is an expectation of this school and where a student is not wearing their uniform consistently or without a reasonable explanation a sanction will be implemented like detention. For more complex issues such as violence, Oxley High School will follow the policy closely and in these instances Principals are directed by policy to suspend students from 4 days up to 20 school days. I will be very clear that this is regardless of who starts or finishes the violence. The argument that “he started it” is not accepted nor supported by any person in this school or for that matter the P&C. In the past 4 years that I have been at Oxley High School we have had 8 incidents of violence. I can verify that we have moved past some of our recent history around behaviour to a school that is harmonious and caring of each other and, most importantly the culture of Oxley High school is to resolve situations prior to violence. I would encourage all families to speak with their children about supporting their child and in cases where there is frustration in the actions of others, encourage your child to report the matter before it becomes a significant issue.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE (continued) LOGBOOKIssue 2 - March 2016

Mobile phones and electronic devicesDuring the last two weeks, students have been introduced to the new school expectations and rules regarding the use of mobile phones, through year meetings, assemblies, general announcements and reminders from staff.

The process is as follows;• Students are required to ensure that all mobile and electronic devices are to be turned off and placed in their bag prior to each lesson. • Each classroom will have a box where students can place their phone for safe keeping during the lesson. (Stickers with the student’s names have been generated and issued to students to assist in the identification of their phone.) • Phones and electronic devices will be permitted to be used in the classroom under teacher direction and instruction. This policy will be available on the school’s website.

Payment of FeesI would like to touch on the payment of fees. It is not discriminatory for the school to neither ask for fees nor insist on their payment. In fact Subject Elective Fees and their collection are very important to your child’s education at this school. In order to clear up some of the confusion around Subject Elective Fees and Voluntary Fees, these are explained below: Elective Fees are considered necessary by the school to pay for the materials required for students to study a subject. Given that the student “elects” to study this subject, the family is acknowledging that they will pay the fees and for the materials.

Voluntary Fees are paid by choice and are used by the school to purchase additional resources such as computers, textbooks etc. Where families are struggling to pay for elective fees, we can either make a payment plan, move the student out of the elective or a combination of both. In cases where the school has not had sufficient information from a family we may seek to restrict all extra-curricular activities until the matter is finalised. This includes sport, non-compulsory excursions, formals and Year 12 jumpers. The collection of elective fees has allowed the school to expand its curriculum to ensure that Oxley High School students have access to an extremely broad curriculum and that students have access to up to date resources. I encourage every family to make it a priority to pay their subject fees as soon as possible.

Parents and Citizens AssociationThe P&C met on Monday the 22nd February in the Library at 6:45 pm. The meeting was very productive, discussing the directions of the P&C and our school in the 2016 context. I would encourage any parents or carers considering becoming involved in their child’s education to either become a member of the Oxley High School P&C or contact someone who is on it and offer a helping hand at one of our main events such as International Night, Antique Fair or Camp Oxley. Next meeting is scheduled on March 23rd at 6:45 pm in the Oxley High School Staff Common Room.

HSC CallBack: Week 3 this term HSC and Preliminary Dance students travelled to Sydney for the annual HSC CallBack excursion to view the exemplary works from the 2015 HSC. Mrs Abell and Mrs Mooney filled the three-day excursion with excitement and learning opportunities across a range of dance experiences. Not only did we see the HSC Callback Performance but we also had the privilege of being part of the audience for “Matilda” the musical at the Lyric Theater, an exceptional performance of dance, singing and acting by some incredible young performers. We also broadened our dance experiences taking part in contemporary workshops at Dance Central with Columbian Choreographer Daniela Zambrano, and Village Performing Arts, with Alice Robinson, followed by a fun and energetic hip hop class with Chaz Cummings at Village PA. The students also took part in HSC CallBack Performance and Composition workshops with members of the HSC marking team, a rare opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding through a variety of teachers and activities. Our students worked incredibly hard throughout all of the sessions and their behaviour and conduct whilst travelling was exceptional. Our students conduct themselves with the highest standards within the community and it was a pleasure spend three days working with these fine young ladies. By Mrs Irem Mooney, Dance Teacher

YOUR INTEREST IN YOUR CHILD’S EDUCATION IS BENEFICIAL TO US ALL

Dear Parent / Caregiver

On Wednesday, 23rd March we will have our first school disco. This is our Year 7 Welcome Disco and the time when we introduce our new students to the social activities formally run by our school. The disco commences at 7.00pm and concludes at 10.00pm. Very strict supervision is applied. Students once entering the disco must remain there under teacher supervision until its conclusion or may be collected from the school hall by parents at an earlier time only by contacting the teachers on supervision at the hall door.

In conjunction with this year’s disco we would like to invite all Year 7 Parents and Caregivers to accompany their children at 6.00pm to a “Welcome to the School Community” function preceding the disco. This function will be held in our school quadrangle during which time students will be asked to introduce their parents to their teachers in an effort to forge early links between the school and home. As most of you have been actively involved with your child’s Primary education we hope this can now be maintained as we also value your involvement and commitment to your child’s education during their High School years.

At 7.30pm when students have entered the disco, you are cordially invited to attend the first P & C Meeting for the year, held in the Staff Common room. Coffee and tea will be served at the conclusion of the P & C Meeting.

We look forward to meeting you.

The SRC CAMPFrom 7 to 9 February, the SRC wenton their annual camp to discuss and put together their yearly plan for 2016. They decided to focus on four areas of improvement for the school; new lockers, more shelter, more sitting areas and refrigerated bubblers. The SRC is going to achieve this through multiple new fundraisers such as; a carnival fete, a lock in-where students come to the school to participate in the evening activities such as karaoke, games and cinema under the stars, and they are planning to have a community trivia night and student talent competition. They will also be hosting a Year 7 disco early Term One and are planning to fundraise through innovative food stalls (including Mexican and Italian). The SRC will be continuing charity work within the community, such as the Red Shield Appeal and the Salvation Army Christmas fundraiser. The SRC had a great time on camp and are very excited to see what 2016 brings for Oxley High School.By Geordie Brown and Amy Zhou

On Wednesday 17th February, 142 Year 7 students caught buses to Forster for three days of fun team building activities. As soon as the students were off the bus they were put into five groups and the fun began. Over the three days they participated in High Ropes, Raft Building, Dual Flying Fox, Zorb Balls,

Mud Run and the Giant Leap. All of these activities required the students to challenge themselves, work in a team or both. On each night after dinner the students were involved in a whole group activity. On the first night it was a version of Minute to Win It and the second night it was a game called

Commando. All students arrived home safe but exhausted and a big thanks goes out to the Year 7 students, the instructors at the camp and the teachers who gave up their time to go on the camp for making it an experience that everyone will remember.By Mr Perkins, Year 7 Advisor

Oxley High’s Year 10 History students were given the opportunity to travel to Sydney on Thursday the 18th of February to broaden their knowledge on the topic of World War II and the Holocaust. The overnight trip was organised by Mrs O’Brien, joined by Mr Walsh, who kindly spent his birthday chauffeuring the group of 21 students to Sydney and back. The group departed Tamworth at 5:30am and arrived in Sydney around 12pm. That afternoon they spent 5 hours at the Jewish Museum, where they were given a guided tour of the museum, along with multiple lectures, led by historians and they

were also privileged enough to speak with some survivors of the Holocaust. On the Friday before departing Sydney, the students visited “The Big Dig”, which is an archaeology education centre located in The Rocks. They participated in a workshop where they were able to handle artifacts found on the site by archaeologists and learnt about the history of the location. This was the first time the excursion had run for Oxley High students. The students all gained some valuable knowledge and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all. By Samantha Bailey

VALUABLE HISTORY LESSONSYr 10 History in Sydney, 18 February 2016

GYMNASTICS SUCCESSEarly in January 2016, Year 11 student Georgia Pryer and Year 8 student Josie Douglas, travelled to the United States with a team of Tamworth Gymnastic girls, to compete in two very tough gymnastic tournaments against many teams from New Zealand, Canada, New Jersey, Australia and the United States. The first competition in Las Vegas was called the Lady Luck Competition where Georgia was placed 1st on vault, 2nd on floor and bars, 4th on beam and was ranked 5th overall in her age division of 50 competitors. Josie had very tough competition in her age division and was placed 11th overall. At the second competition, the Vitaly Scherbo Invitational, Georgia came 1st on bars and beam, 4th on vault and 2nd on floor and was ranked 1st in her age division. Josie was placed 9th in her age division and the pair helped their Tamworth team come 2nd out of the 7 sides to compete at that tournament. Georgia and Josie did some sightseeing while they were there in Los Angeles visiting Disneyland and watching college gymnastics and both remarked that the 12 days of travelling and competing was an unforgettable experience. We are very proud of Georgia and Josie and we look forward to seeing much more of them in the future.

LOGBOOKNEWS MARCH 2016

It has been very exciting to see our new elective units up and running - Cake Decorating and Woodcraft. We also have a beautiful new garden that has fresh fruits and herbs for students to use in Food Technology classes.

Cake Decorating: We have been practising some basic icing techniques on biscuits with some very pleasing results. This week will see Year 7 using these skills to decorate cupcakes that will be entered into the Tamworth show.

Wood Craft: We have started making a wooden dice which introduces the students to basic wood techniques and the use of hand tools.

Our Year 7 and 8 TAS classes have also been busy in Graphics, Metal, Plastics, Timber, Food Technology and Textiles with the students working hard learning many new skills. Last year they made boxer shorts as part of the development of

Products in the Technology (Mandatory) course. After learning how to thread the sewing machine, tack, pin and machine stitch, each child in this class made their own boxer shorts to wear. We celebrated the students’ accomplishments with a “wild shirt and boxer shorts” party with executive and teaching staff. The students paraded their shorts for the staff to see. Thank you to Mrs Jeffery and Mr Mack for their help throughout the term in the classroom. Mr Petrie won the award for the best dressed teacher in his “wild shirt and board shorts”. The achievement of each student in this classroom was a truly wonderful example of Support students integrating successfully with Mainstream students. On the 3rd and 4th of March Mrs Wallace took her Year 11 Textiles students to Sydney to view the best major Textile Projects from last year’s HSC. This is held at the Stitches and Craft Fair. They also visited the Powerhouse Museum to view a collection of clothing designed by Collette

Dinnigan. This provided the students with a valuable insight into the textile world but also gave them some inspiration into their own textile project that they will have to design and make for their HSC.

Year 9 Child Studies are learning about different types of families. They are currently working on a cultural assessment task which looks at different cultural families and the way they live. Year 10 Child Studies are continuing their learning in Newborn care.

Year 12 Kitchen Operations and Metal and Engineering have just completed their final week of work placement, which gives the students a taste of what it is like working in the industry. This goes towards the mandatory hours required in completing a VET course in which the students are working towards receiving a Certificate 2.

It’s all happening in TAS

Non-attendance lnterview Program in Schools (NIPS)

Oxley High School will be involved in an attendance initiative known as NIPS. The program will be run by a team including a Regional Attendance Officer(s) and school staff. The objective of NIPS is to reduce the number of students who have unjustified absences. The team will talk with students whose attendance is of concern. The team intends to raise awareness in the school and home environments of the importance of regular attendance.Students with attendance issues will be individually interviewed by this team to discuss any barriers to regular attendance.

lf your child is interviewed, you will receive a letter outlining the process which was followed.lf you have any queries about NIPS, please contact Mr Mark Jenson HSLO on 0448569660.

Oxley High School prides itself on upholding exceptional standards and a positive image both within our school and as members of the wider community. We therefore appreciate the continued support of our parents and carers in this area. Our school uniform policy and detailed description of the school uniform can be found on the Oxley High School Web Site:

Students who are unable to wear the full school uniform on any occasion must provide a note from home to the uniform officer (Deputy Principal) BEFORE SCHOOL to obtain a Uniform Exemption Pass. Disciplinary action will be enforced for those students out of uniform, without written explanation. If families are experiencing any financial difficulties and are unable to meet uniform requirements, we have a Clothing Pool operating on Fridays between 12Noon and 2.00pm and some student assistance is available through Macquarie Office. All students have been advised of these procedures during the first week of term, and once again we appreciate the ongoing cooperation of our school families. If you have any further queries or require support, please contact your child’s Year Adviser or Head Teacher Welfare as soon as possible.

COMPULSORY SPORT FEEIn order to minimise the cost of sporting events run at Oxley High School, the $10.00 sporting fee is again in operation for 2016. Apologies for the late notice in this regard. Families are currently being invoiced for the $10 Sport Fee. We wish to take this opportunity to remind parents/carers that there is a substantial number of students who have elective fees outstanding from previous years. Could those parents/carers please make arrangements with the school for payment of these fees, as your child can not be signed out of school until all fees are collected. If you are having problems meeting your fees for electives or sport please call at the Front Office to discuss any options the school may be able to consider.

CLOTHING POOLThe Oxley High School Clothing Pool opens on Fridays from 12 to 2.00pm for all uniform needs or pre-loved uniforms.Oxley High School is always looking for volunteers to run the Clothing Pool, so if you can spare a couple of hours on another day, please contact the school on 6766 1677.

Dear parents !

2. Reassure your child they are not to blame. Many children blame themselves and this may make them feel even worse. You could say things like, ‘That sounds really hard to deal with. No one should have to put up with that.’ or ‘I’m so glad you told me. You should be able to feel safe at school; that’s not fair at all’.

3. Ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do. A critical part of your response is to avoid jumping in to solve the problem. While it is natural to want to protect your child, helping them to find their own solution is a better option. It helps them feel they have some power in the situation.

4. Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies. The website has tips and ideas for different bullying situations. One idea is to practise strategies at home to help your child feel more confident.

5. Contact the school. Your child may be reluctant for you to do this, so discuss the idea and reassure them that the school would want to know and is able to help. Make an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher and, if you need to, ask to talk with the principal. Contact the school immediately if you have a concern about your child’s safety.

6. Check in regularly with your child. Keep the conversation going. It can take time to resolve issues, so check in regularly with your child about their experiences and their feelings. Your ongoing support is important. If you are looking for support for yourself to deal with a bullying situation, you will find ideas on the Bullying. No Way! website for parents. As well, please contact the school if you would like to discuss any aspect of our approach to preventing bullying. Thanks for your support to make our school a great school for everyone.

At our school we aim to create a safe and supportive school community for everyone. Sometimes, it can be difficult for parents or carers to know what to do when their child talks to them about bullying. You are an important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively if it happens. Stopping bullying involves everyone. !If your child talks to you about bullying:!

1. Listen calmly and get the full story. Your calm response is important to allow your child to tell you all about the situation. After they’ve told you their story, ask questions to get more details if you need to: who, what, where, when. Although you may feel some strong emotions about your child’s experience, try to keep calm to avoid more distress to your child.
