FINANCIAL SUPPORTIf coming to college meansextra cost to you, we may beable to help.

The 16-19 Bursary Fund is anew scheme to help youngpeople facing financial hardshipto stay in full-time education.

You will be eligible to receive abursary of £1,200 a year if youare under 19 on 31 August inthe academic year in which youstart your full-time course andmeet one of the followingcriteria:

• You are in care

• You are a care leaver

• You are independently inreceipt of Income Support

• You are Disabled and inreceipt of both EmploymentSupport Allowance andDisability Living Allowance

Other students who needfinancial support may be able to claim a bursary through ourDiscretionary Learner SupportFund to help with costs ofequipment, books, uniform,food and travel. If you areeligible and aged 20+ there issupport towards childcarecosts.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES The College has StudentLiaison Officers and a StudentUnion who organise a widerange of activities and eventsat the College. You can jointhe NUS free, but to get all thebenefits of the NUS Discountsyou need to purchase theNUS Extra Card. This offersdiscounts in shops, leisurecentres, cinemas andnightclubs, however there is a charge. NUS Cards areavailable from StudentServices or visitwww.nus.org.uk

FREE TUITION FEES If you are 19 + and haven't gota Full Level 2 qualification andenrol on a Full Level 2 course,your course tuition fee isFREE; all you pay for areassessments, exam fees andmaterials where necessary. If you are aged 19 - 24 (at thestart of the course) and do not have a Full Level 3qualification then tuition is also free and you only pay forassessments, exam fees andmaterials where necessary.

A £598 per year inclusive feewill apply if you are 19+ andalready have Full Level 2 or 3qualifications and are enrollingon a Full Time course.

WHY BECOME AN APPRENTICE? You will be working in an area youenjoy and get paid, receiving aminimum of £104 per week or £2.60per hour pro-rata with no studentdebts!

With this great foundation to buildon, you will have a wide range ofoptions available to you in the future.

HOW LONG IS ANAPPRENTICESHIP? Apprenticeships take at least 16months and AdvancedApprenticeships at least two yearsdepending on your ability and youremployers’ requirements.

HOW DO I BECOME ANAPPRENTICE? You must be 16 or over, living inEngland and not in Full-Timeeducation. There are flexible entryrequirements as Apprenticeships arenot just based on academicachievement but are much morepractical based. The course is designed for mature learners who arereturning to education and is intended to build the skillsand confidence required to enable you to move on to arange of Level 3 programmes.

What qualifications or experience do I need?

There are no entry requirements other than an interest in thecourse and the opportunities that it offers, coupled with areasonable standard of written English. Students will beinterviewed prior to joining the course.

How long is the course?

1 year full time = 36 weeks.

What will I learn?

All students will study the following subjects; Maths, English, IT,Personal Development Studies, Business Studies, IndividualResearch Project, Sociology and Psychology.

How will I learn?

Students learn in a number of ways and engage in a wide varietyof activities, from traditional class discussions to up-to-the-minuteinteractive technologies. There are opportunities for individualand group work, and as mature learners Progression Diplomastudents are encouraged to express and debate their thoughtsand opinions on the topics under consideration. Lively guestspeakers are regularly invited in to give learners insights into arange of potential careers and opportunities.

How will I be assessed?

The course is continuously assessed by regular assignments and time constrained tests. You will experience a variety ofassessment methods during your time on the course, such asessays, reports, presentations and observed discussions.

What materials and equipment will I need?

You will need a large lever arch folder for your main portfolio, plus separate folders for each individual subject you are studying.You will also need the usual stationery (pens, pencils, rulers etc)and A4 lined paper/notepads for taking notes. The Access to HE course is a QAA approved full-timecourse designed for mature students. It is particularlysuitable for people who have been out of education forsome time and need to develop or rediscover theirconfidence and academic skills.

What will I learn?

This course is aimed at anyone wanting to continue todevelop on to the level 2 (possibly from level 1) but couldalso be starting at this level with appropriate experience.This is a very practical course and is based aroundworking and learning in the motor vehicle industry.

The course involves understanding why and how motor vehiclesystems operate. You will strip down cars and their componentsto fully understand and carry out fault diagnosis.

What qualifications or experience do I need?

You will usually already hold a level 1 qualification in light motorvehicle engineering, and have GCSE grades equivalent to C inMaths and English. However, entry is by interview and will bebased on your previous experience, school qualifications,knowledge and enthusiasm. Direct entry without a level 1qualification is possible if you have the right attitude andexperience.
