Then and Now : Soccer in Locust PointBy Damian O’Connor

Two old newspaper photos depict teams visiting Locust Point 50 and 60 years ago. The left photo is labeled “1950 Old Reistad Field Fort Avenue”.

The second caption reads:“ A Locust Point soccer team faces an Italian club on Feb. 11, 1963.” The fans in the photo are mostly men and are dressed in suits, ties, overcoats and hats.

2016 – Soccer at the Banner Field in Latrobe Park. Players on recreation league teams face off on a hot summer evening. The uniforms are colorful, the teams are co-ed, and the spectators are wearing shorts and tee shirts.

If you have had dental work done in Locust Point in the last 40 years, it was probably done by Dr. Richard Lamb. He has worked from his dental office at 1600 Fort Avenue, on the corner of Fort and Towson Street, since 1976.

How did you decide to open an office in Locust Point? In October of 1976, I was looking to start my practice in Baltimore and was scouting locations. I had seen a building on Light Street and then came here. My friend said there is a church (Good Counsel) on the other corner, a park across the street and it’s a good spot for foot traffic. The landlord, Buck Tucker, told me I wouldn’t have to pay him rent until I had my first patient. Buck was a real mensch and later sold me the building, which at one time was a ships’ chandlery.

How did you get the practice going? Very soon after that, Shirley and Victor Doda decided to have a small party in town. She arranged for a beer truck to park

right on Fort Avenue and set me up at a table to sell tickets. She introduced me to all the neighbors who came by. That was the first Locust Point Festival and it has been running just about every year since. The Festival was Shirley’s brainchild and used to be held on a Sunday in October. It started after the churches let out and also had to work around the pro football (Colts and later Ravens home games). Later it moved to Saturdays. There are a lot more vendors and activi-ties today but it still serves the community.

What was Locust Point like in the 1970s and your early years? There were mostly old buildings here until the developers moved in about 15 years ago. The town ended about Reynolds Street. There were more retail businesses then but they closed one by one as people would go out to the suburbs for groceries and shopping. It was a tight, hard-working community with people who lived and worked nearby.

You have probably seen some businesses change… There used to be a pharmacy (Boenning’s) on the corner of Fort and Hull and a hardware store next to the funeral parlor. The cupcake place (Dessert Fantasies) used to be Hot Dog John’s, with hot dogs turning on a spit in the window. There were mom-and-pop grocery stores; one was Wagner’s on Hull Street and another in the Himalayan House.

Were the wharves and shipyards still active? I used to get sailors and dock workers as patients; men from the United Brands (Chiquita Banana) which was set up on one of the wharves. There were workers from Domino and the grain elevator and later I would get crew members from the cruise ships.

Do you still enjoy the job? No retirement plans. I will work until I can’t anymore. I love the mindset and the ambience here. The community has been wonder-ful, people who work hard and help their neighbors.

Volunteer Opportunities at Francis Scott Key School(READING PARTNERS)

By Hap DuffeyOver the past three years, Francis Scott Key School has been transformed from an underutilized, neglected,

educational facility into a dynamic and highly respected school which is attracting motivated students throughout Baltimore City, as well as from surrounding counties. This is a result of its outstanding STEM/robotics lab, its music, art, drama and PE programs, and its Reading Partners Initiative, which is supported by Americorp Fellows. (www.ReadingPartners.org)

Reading Partners is a nationally recognized, educational, non-profit organization that matches dedicated com-munity volunteers with struggling kindergarten through 4th grade students. The program utilizes an easy to follow, evidence-based curriculum. Volunteers devote a minimum of one hour one day a week to work one-on-one with students who are reading below grade level.

Currently, 89% of Baltimore City 4th graders are not reading at grade level, and when a child is not reading at grade level by the 4th grade, that student is 4 times less likely to graduate from high school. Reading Partners provides training and tutoring support throughout the entire year to anyone interested in volunteering, so students and tutors have an enjoyable, stress- free experience.

The continued success of our neighborhood school depends upon the participation of enthusiastic community volunteers working alongside our current dedicated and highly motivated teachers, principal and PTO. During the 2016-2017 academic year, with your help, Francis Scott Key School (www.baltimorecityschools.org/76) will continue to build upon the amazing success it has achieved over the past three years.

Anyone interested in joining Reading Partners, or in volunteering in other departments at Francis Scott Key School, can e-mail: [email protected] for enrollment instructions, or for further information.
