MESSAGE FROMTHE PRESIDENT

NALSANATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LOCUMS IN SOUTH AFRICA

NALSA

In this issue of Locum Lifestyle you will read about many interesting matters that may affect you in one way or the other, but I would like to highlight our feature article on page 20 about a young diabetic Villiers Van Der Walt, who tri-umphed over adversity and is an inspiration to us all. Recent statistics from LinkedIn Talent Solutions have indicated the typical career path is more fluid than ever. Today, talent is staying more con-nected, informed and open to new opportunities throughout their professional lives. According APSO (Federation of African Profes-sional Staffing Organisations) 1 out 3 employees are seriously thinking about leaving their job. In light of these important industry surveys and feedback, NALSA and Locum Lifestyle is highlighting our commitment to increase your exposure to more quality job opportunities by growing our relationship with placement agen-cies and job and career providers.

Good news is that the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) has announced that the 2nd National Pharmacy conference will be held on 21-24 October 2016 in Durban ICC, South Africa. The President of Council, Prof Mano Chetty said in the latest Pharmaciae: “Council plans to visit the provinces and meet with different pharmacy organisations and societies during the next two years. We hope these visits will initiate more effective communication between Council and

its members, and assist Council in understanding some of the opportunities and challenges expe-rienced by the profession. A further opportunity for discussions and debate between different pharmacy sectors will present itself at the next National Pharmacy Conference which is being planned for 2016. We trust that these interac-tions will support our growth and effectiveness as a profession.”

Something that caught my attention in the press release of the upcoming pharmacy conference, is that Human Resources in Pharmacy is once again listed as a key conference topic. It is hard to believe that the year is quickly running to its end and I would like to reiterate NALSA’s pledge:• We campaign for professional equality, provi-

sion of education and political representation• Publish a bi-monthly Locum Lifestyle Magazine • Negotiate discounts, special benefits and special

offers of products and services to our members• Support national conferences• Produce a Standardised Practice Induction Pack

for Locum Contractors • Publish a Code of Good Practice• Build strong links with the professional health-

Emerging brain science over the last 15 years has proven that the brain is able to change. This

means you can actively change your brain’s physical structure, which then impacts on the way you will experience life, how you behave, respond and think. In fact, you can actually shift your entire neurobiology and chemistry. Your Chemical HighwaysYour nerves “fire” in patterns based on your known experiences. Your behaviour is “triggered” by how you relate to the thoughts you have about your experiences. In order to shift the current structures and chemical highways that no longer serve you, you have to create new and novel experiences OR change the way you perceive and relate to current experiences.Step one for re-construction of new highways: Take a different route Like any new skill, this takes practice. Identify a current “route” you keep using that is not serving you – for example it might be the thoughts you think and frustrations you feel when in traffic. Replace this current highway with a new one by focusing on your breathing, listening to the radio or noticing the scenery – or even calling up the sensation of a pleasant memory. The more you focus your attention on a positive new awareness in the present moment and interrupt the “brain traffic”, the more embedded the new “route” becomes and you break old ways of relating; being; thinking and doing.

According to statistics we have between 50 000 – 70 000 thoughts per day – many of them are the same, thought repeated. We

often talk of negative effects of our thought patterns by saying things like: “I am a nervous wreck”, or “I feel strung out”. We often feel “highjacked” by our old thinking, habits and behaviour and find that our negative focus has returned to its old habits. This is perfectly normal. It takes repeated shifting of attention to “redirect the traffic” and shift your biology and wiring for long-term benefits.

Redirect the TrafficShifting focus and then maintaining focus can be challenging due to our current ways being so ingrained. If you keep at it though, it will become part of your body’s chemistry. You can shift the structure of your brain, the grey matter, the hormone activity in your body, the receptor sites in your 75 trillion cells and positively influence the way you relate to and experience your thoughts and emotions which effects behaviour and enjoyment of life. To change your focus and allow yourself to create a new experience that challenges a current pattern is the simple act of changing the way you perceive something. This alters the way you relate to it, which in turn affects your emotions and thoughts around it.Maybe its time to experience life in the driving seat instead of going through the motions unconsciously and on cruise control.

You have routines (and thoughts about these routines) that literally shape you and your BIOLOGY – affecting your internal chemistry: Wake up, shower, make lunch, go to work, deadlines, go to an exercise class, etc. When was the last time you really experienced your shower ritual? Pave a new way. So how

do you stop yourself from being highjacked? Starting now, why not challenge yourself for the next 21 days to become aware of your body and really experience your daily shower. Five minutes a day. When you notice that you are back in your head, shift your attention back to your body and sensation. Focus your attention on the experience of showering and the senses. How your hand feels when you turn the tap on, the pressure of the water, the smell of the soap, the sound of the water, the feeling of your shoulders relaxing – all of this will help you to manage your nervous system and promote a sense of calm. How? You are allowing neurons to fire together in a different way by shifting your awareness and by being in the moment, which will create a new circuit and short circuit the old one. It will also create a “gap” in the firing and help calm down your nervous system ensuring you are more productive and less reactive. This is a simple technique, however it takes practice to maintain focus on being aware of what is happening and not getting lost in the neighbourhood of old thinking patterns. When you notice your life is stuck in routine, gently shift focus back to what you are busy with, the shower. Don’t put pressure on yourself to “get it right” as this could shut down the brain’s frontal lobe and increase anxiety. See it as a game – it’s really not a “serious” activity. Instead of your shower being experienced as a thing on your “to do” list, it becomes an enjoyable experience and promotes a sense of balance.

Go on, come to your senses and change the chemistry!

I t was January 2009 when I was diagnosed as a Type 1 Diabetic. I remember lying on the bed with the sister injecting me with my first

shot of Insulin, telling me that my blood sugar level was very high and that I had Diabetes. I said okay, so how long do you think this diabetic thing will last? There was an awkward pause and then she said that I will have it for the rest of my life. My blood sugar levels were around 15.8 mmol/L and my HBA1C was 8.2 mmol/L.

At that stage I was a normal 31 year old guy whose life had just been turned upside down. One day I was with my friends on the beach catching cob and the next day I was laying in a hospital bed as a diabetic. My father was a Type 2 diabetic who did not live accordingly as he loved eating and exercise was not part of his vocabulary. I can count on my one hand the times he tested himself and he never spoke about his diabetes.

After being diagnosed, I got swamped with pamphlets, books and advice explaining this “foreign” condition to me. For the first time in my life there were so many restrictions upon my lifestyle. The words “sugar free” and “low GI” became the ultimate focus point of my diet.

Visiting Doctors and Dietitians became a normal routine of my life and it is important to have this support systems in place. Doctors, Dietitians, my family and at that stage my fiancé, all supported me and guided me into new lifestyle patterns. All the advice and assistance are vital for my survival but at the end I had to accept the fact that I needed to make a life altering decision myself: ”Will diabetes manage my life or am I

going to manage Diabetes?”Was this possible? The answer is “Yes” but if you ask me if it is an easy journey, the answer is “No”!

Type 1 Diabetes is a condition where the pancreas produces little or no insulin. The body breaks down the sugars and starches you eat into a simple sugar called glucose, which it uses for energy. Insulin is a hormone that the body needs, to get glucose from the bloodstream into the cells of the body.

Injecting oneself with insulin before a meal replaces the natural insulin production of the pancreas. The correct amount of insulin to inject is always a guessing game but after two hours one can clearly feel if the dosage that was injected is correct. Injecting too little insulin can cause the blood sugar levels to spike after eating your meal and can be detrimental to your health. In turn, too much insulin can cause blood sugar levels to decrease below 4 mmol/L, causing the body to go into the hypoglycemic stage. This is very dangerous and can be life threatening.

Symptoms in early stages of hypoglycaemia can include: confusion; dizziness; blurred vision; rapid heart beat; extreme fatigue; headache; extreme sweating; uncontrolled shaking; extreme hunger, anxiety and dizziness. Without treatment this can lead to poor coordination; poor concentration; numbness in mouth and tongue, passing out and even coma.

As a diabetic every single time you think of consuming something, you need to ask yourself: “How will this affect my blood sugar levels?” Always put your diabetes first and manage it to the best of your ability - stay on guard!

Make sure to inject yourself with a long-acting insulin every night, to counter the snacking you have in between meals during the day. These lifestyle changes can become overwhelming and sometimes the frustration builds up to the point where one can feel like giving in and yes, perhaps giving up is much easier than going on. My personal advise: “Convince yourself to keep going, don’t give up! Life is worth living and fighting for!”

With all this said, there is a bright side as well. Do your best to control your insulin intake and the magic word is, exercise. Choose a physical activity you like, whatever it may be, as long as it provides some form of physical exercise.

For me, it was mountain biking. With regular biking my HBA1C decreased from 8.2 mmol/L to 6.9 mmol/L. The more you exercise the less insulin you need and now I can even go for a few days without using my short-acting insulin.

If you are not used to everyday exercise, the first hurdle you need to overcome is finding the motivation to start exercising. This is a challenge that is hard to face without having that extra energy (sugar) to exercise with. Start slowly and ease into it. Exercising in a safe environment and preventing the hypoglycemic phase during training is key.

Always have access to an insulin injection as a safety measurement while exercising. It took me two years to ease into fitness and getting my cycling up to the standard where it is

today. The biggest hurdle I had to overcome was choosing the correct supplements or energy boosters for a Diabetic.

I was cycling on my own one afternoon, speeding down a single track when suddenly I realised how challenging it was to get to where I am today. Now living healthy and being able to control my blood sugar levels in order to cycle for 65km at a time without my diabetes being an issue. It was then that I decided that I had to share this journey with someone else suffering from diabetes. If my experience can motivate one diabetic to get outside and start exercising and in turn have a better life, I would feel that I have accomplished something worthwhile.

As a diabetic, I believe that I can have a normal life and compete in one day cycling races. My dream is to participate in a 3 day stage race like the Wine 2 Whales event. This 3 day stage race starts in the winelands of Somerset West, crossing through 13 wineries; 26 private farms and stretches over 6 mountains. A distance of +- 230km and finally ending at Onrus.

Christian von Palace and Tracy Jurgens from La Vie De Luc Mineral water, a leading mineral water company, heard of my dream and offered to be a part of this journey of realizing my dream.

La Vie De Luc branded my cycling clothes with MH Electrical. The message we want to get out there is well stated in our logo on my cycling clothes... Diabetics… Can.

I make the necessary compromises where necessary like always cycling with someone else. Knowledge is power, the people I cycle with all know that I am a diabetic and what could happen if my blood sugar levels dropped, and for safety reasons, I have informed them of what to do in such a situation. I don’t ever remove my medical alert bracelet and always keep my medical aid card with me when cycling. Checking my blood sugar level before cycling is vital and the usual routine before cycling includes: Testing my blood sugar levels before eating breakfast, this is followed by a low GI breakfast, like Low GI Oats. I don’t use any Insulin before cycling as the exercise will lower my sugar levels

Page 23: Locum Lifestyle Magazine Edition 5

naturally. Normally I start cycling 30 minutes after breakfast. If my sugar level was 6 mmol/L before breakfast, it will increase to about 9 mmol/L by the time I start cycling. Within the first 30 minutes of cycling I will have a chocolate bar, like a Nosh, Tempo or even a GU energy gel. But when my sugar reading is higher than 6 mmol/L, for example 8 mmol/L or 9 mmol/L, I will start cycling but skip my first 30 minute chocolate bar or GU gel.

For every cycling hour thereafter I will have a sachet GU gel. GU gel is prescribed to work for approximately 45 minutes during exercise. I also drink about 750ml of GI 32 Endure once a 25km distance has been covered. This works well for me as it increases my sugar level by +- 1.5 mmol/L over a period of 30 minutes and it will gradually drop over a period of 2 hours - resulting in more slow releasing energy lasting much longer - ideal for a diabetic. If I train during the afternoons,

breakfast is substituted with a slice of low GI bread with peanut butter and a banana. I cycle 5 to 6 days a week, covering between 20km to 25km a day and on weekends anything between 65km to 70km. During these longer rides I will drink water and eat a banana or nuts & raisins every 2.5 hours and use the above mentioned supplements. If I exercise with the above mentioned supplements with an average speed of about 18 km/h my blood sugar level usually rises to about 7 to 8 mmol/L.I am using Recovery also from GI 32 and drink that within the first 15 minutes after exercising. It works wonders as a recovery, but raises my sugar levels about 4 mmol/L. Something to keep in consideration. The best way to learn the ups and downs of your blood sugar levels before, during and after exercising, is to keep a daily log.

This way you can see what your specific needs will be especially when you start exercising and start doing the longer rides. It will be your guideline to work from and will give you more confidence at a later stage when you don’t need to test yourself on the track while exercising - only testing before you start to exercise and once you are done.Start by cycling short distances until you get your blood sugar levels 100% in conjunction with your supplement intake. Thereafter gradually increase your distance and intensity levels.

I stay 1.5km from one of the most breathtaking MTB trails in the Western Cape. Bottelary Hills MTB trail is a very well looked after trail with new sections being added yearly. For me, this is a good all round trail to exercise on because it is challenging in all the elements of MTB king. It’s got the normal farm roads with some jeep tracks and is not called Bottelary Hills for nothing…with hills like Heartbreak Hill and Kaapzight Killer just to

Page 24: Locum Lifestyle Magazine Edition 5

24 LOCUM LIFESTYLE

name a few. Some hills stretching up to 2.5km. It offers some challenging rock garden climbs. Manoeuvring your front wheel over and around some loose boulders, while your granny gear works overtime, will exhilarate you. On the superfast single tracks you can reach speeds of up to 50km/h.

I try to push myself to my limits during training; the harder you push yourself the more fuel you burn but in order to do this, you need to adjust your supplement intake. Different terrains are also going to play a very big role in your energy that you burn. Two hours of cycling on normal farm roads will have a very different affect on your sugar levels than cycling the very challenging and dangerous black route at Delvera.Cycling in 35 degrees Celsius will also have a very different affect on your body than doing a cycling session on a cold winters morning.

These are all aspects that you need to take into consideration when you exercise. Make 100% sure you have studied your sugar levels in such a way that you are confident enough to push yourself to the limit. Competing in high pace races increase your adrenalin levels and can be more challenging to push a bit harder without burning yourself out.

It is critical to get to know your body in such a way that you know what the difference is between what you think is

exhaustion and what you know is hypoglycemic...There is a very thin line between the two. The symptoms are very much the same. If you push yourself very hard during training or at a race you my start to feel shaky, tired, or sweat excessively and also get hungry.

I always pack in extra fuel, as I need to be prepared for the worst case scenarios, especially when riding trails that are unfamiliar to

me and not well marked. Getting lost for an hour or two is a reality in cycling. Or perhaps a very bad fall can happen and “fuel” can become the ultimate survival source.

As I said before, being diagnosed as a diabetic can have an overwhelming affect on you. Your whole life changes in the blink of an eye and it is irreversible for the rest of your life. Diabetes can be a physically challenging disease and mentally even more so. In most

cases for me diabetes is mentally a bigger challenge than physically.

Although training with my Wine 2 Whales partner is great and I have his support, I prefer training alone. Especially during longer more challenging rides.

During training I sometimes get to a point where I am so exhausted that I just want to quit. Especially once I have completed the first 50km and with another 30km ahead of me, I often feel like I

can’t proceed and that the 50km was enough. Especially when the cycling circumstances is harsh; I am, full of mud in the pouring rain, having fallen a couple of times in the cold and wet conditions. I feel like I am the only mad person cycling and that all the elements are against me. But then for me this is the most important part of my training, the time that I start talking to myself, encouraging myself not to quit. Giving up is not an option! Stopping is a word that does not exist! Pushing myself in cycling in such a possitive way, prepares me for the everyday challenges diabetes will throw at me. It trains me mentally not to give up, reminding

me that I can succeed.By incorporating cycling into my every day life I am able to overcome mental challenges and live a healthier lifestyle.

My goal is not to get a podium position or to finish in the top 10, but to be able to understand and manage diabetes in such a way that I can live a normal life and encourage others to do the same.

In 1991 I arrived in Addo, fresh out of a two year stint in the military and completing my conserva-tion studies, to a world of dense Addo bush and

11 elephants. Back then I was unsure of what to expect, and seeing the mass of Spekboom, I often wondered what I had gotten myself into. Addo was so different to what I was used to. I spent my youth growing up in the Kruger National Park where my father was a ranger for 27 years.

Addo had different attributes, but one commonality was the elephant herds that lurked in the mass of evergreen foliage. Growing up in Kruger I was wary of these massive awe inspiring pachyderms, often hearing tails of misunderstood aggression. So many times in my youth we had close encounters with these colossal animals.

Addo was to be such a different experience. Bearing in mind that these animals had been persecuted to the point of extinction, therefore a natural assump-tion would be that they would have become more aggressive over the years. Only 11 animals survived the once large herds that roamed this part of the country. Old colonials took great satisfaction in shooting elephants for their prized ivory and told imaginary tales of valour relating to aggressive elephants that were incredibly dangerous. How ignorant they were.Over the past 25 years, I have gotten know most of the 600 plus elephants that now are descendants of the original eleven animals. They have sculpted and moulded my inner conservation ethic and lead me on an adventure of understanding, that studies could never have taught me. I am incredibly hum-

bled by their intellect, social and family unity. These misunderstood animals are kind, welcoming and truly communicate on levels we, as humans, do not comprehend.I recall being new to Addo, trying to repair a bore-hole and suddenly a trunk filled with inquisitiveness joined my working hands. Another memory is about a middle aged cow that was struck by lightning. For years thereafter the herd would come back to her remains at regular intervals, prodding and sniffing and mulling around her for hours. I believe they were quietly paying their respects.Today, Addo is a far cry from the original 3500 hec-tare of land that was proclaimed in 1931. The park stretches over 180 000 hectare’s and the elephants roam free over a large portion of this landscape. Incredibly these gentle giants harbour no ill feelings or hatred towards the very same people who nearly drove them to extinction. The Addo elephants show incredible tolerance towards visitors entering the park. I have travelled extensively across Africa and I can assure you that in very few places in Africa, will you experience wild elephants more accommodat-ing and accepting of us as human beings. Not a single incident relating to aggression of elephants has been recorded in Addo in the past 30 years. There are tales of the fabled Hapoor, reputed for his aggression, but very much misunderstood, bearing

in mind his history of persecution and witnessing the demise of his fellow Addo herds at the hands of hunters. We have herds in excess of 100 animals, comprising of very distinct family units, headed by the Matri-arch, who through her leadership guides the various little families in her herd. The cows are incredibly protective of their family ranks, and the youngsters learn through play. Come and experience the adults through subtle but very direct communication protecting and guiding little ones seemingly in distress. Every single aspect of family may be witnessed in the day to day lives of elephants. You will hear them communicate through sounds resembling the rumbling of bellies whilst silently and gracefully walking through the foliage. You will witness a youngster mock charge your vehicle, be-fore hurrying back to his older siblings with stories of his bravado. I am honoured to be part of their lives and what they have taught me. Visit the Addo Elephant National Park, and experience a true conservation wonder.

Put a lid on stress!Stress can damage your health. It can also keep you awake at night, making you feel even more stressed out.Over time, stress can affect your immune, cardiovascular and nerv-ous systems and result in depression and insomnia. Research shows that many doctors’ visits are in fact stress related. Completely eliminating stress from your life is impossible. However, applying stress management tech-niques can reduce some of its harm-ful effects. Following a healthy diet, getting regular exercise and making time for uninterrupted relaxation are some of the techniques.A natural product that can assist in reducing stress and improve sleep quality is the supplement PROZEN®. It contains Suntheanine®, the trade name for the patented pure form of L-theanine, a non-essential amino acid, which is the active ingredi-ent in the green tea plant (Camellia sinensis). Suntheanine®’s structure is identical to the natural amino acid and its benefits are backed up by sound research.Traditional Chinese medicine has for thousands of years recommended green tea for headaches, aches and pains, indigestion, depression and relaxation.

In a placebo-controlled study of men placed in an acutely stressful situa-tion, taking 200 mg of Suntheanine® had a measurably calming effect. The men had reduced heart rates and their levels of salivary immu-noglobulin A (a key stress marker) declined.Other clinical trials show that Suntheanine® stimulates the brain to generate more alpha waves. Alpha waves help muscles to relax and aches and pains caused by stress, to disappear. Clinical studies conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health in Tokyo, Japan, suggest that Sunthea-nine® may help to improve sleep quality.Participants who took 200 mg of Suntheanine® before bedtime all slept better and deeper than those who took a placebo. They also felt rested and refreshed in the morning. Suntheanine® allows the mind to relax and recuperate during sleep.Unlike many medications prescribed to calm anxiety, Suntheanine® does not cause drowsiness or interfere with mental sharpness. In fact, it improves concentration and focus. To date, no known drug interaction or side effects have been reported with the use of Suntheanine®. The Japanese Ministry of Health and

Welfare in 1964 approved it for un-limited use in all foods, except baby foods. The Food and Drug Administration of the US have also approved several ef-ficacy claims. These include reducing stress; promoting relaxation without drowsiness; easing nervousness due to common every day overwork and fatigue and reducing nervous irrita-bility. The key benefits of PROZEN® with Suntheanine® are:• It reduces stress and anxiety.• It’s not addictive.• It promotes relaxation without

causing drowsiness. • It can bring relief to women

suffering from symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome by helping to modulate mood and promot-ing relaxation.

• No drug interactions or side effects have been reported with the use of Suntheanine®.

PROZEN® may be taken at the first signs of stress. Individuals with sleep-ing problems may take two to four capsules about 30 minutes before going to bed.PROZEN® is available without prescription at pharmacies, Clicks, Dis-Chem and MidiRite.

JORG HASENBACH MORE

Every man needs at least one perfect tailor-made suit.

Jorg Hasenbach was born in Germany in 1969. Besides studying economy and art history, he received training in tailor-made suits in Europe.

Before moving to Cape Town, thirteen years ago, he lived in Antwerp / Belgium and in New York, both being important fashion metropoles. Antwerp is world-reknowned for its fashion designers and New York is the city where fashion is worn on the streets.

So what should a man look for in a good suit? A good suit – tailor-made of course – should strike the perfect balance between looking great and feeling comfortable.MORE specialises in made-to-measure suits with a commitment to superior craftsmanship, I work with the finest tailors and the most impeccable Italian fabric. Helping others look good in a perfect custom made suit is my business goal.

The MORE experience is a personalised experience, and it starts quite simply: if you’re in the market for a tailored suit, make an appointment with us and choose to either meet us at our office or we will come to you.

First sessionDuring the first session, which takes an hour and a half, measurements are taken and the style, fabric,

trims and other considerations are discussed. For the fitting, we have a wide collection of suits in all basic sizes to try on.

Once the size is confirmed and the suit is selected, our team models the suit onto the client. MORE’s attention to detail is our pride and each suit can be altered at fifty different points.

The three critical areas are under the arms, the cuff links and the collar – “you must be able to place two fingers comfortably under the col-lar,” This fitting process is the made-to-measure method. The suit is custom-made to fit the cli-ent’s body, unlike the lengthier bespoke method, where a personalised pattern is created for the client.

The Fabric Once the fitting is done, we then discuss fabric of choice. The client can choose from about 700 kinds of material, as many linings and countless style and trim are available. All the fabric is Italian, mostly cashmere, and is luxurious to the touch.

What makes the selection so much easier is that we present inspirational cards which offer mock-up drawings of the suit made up in a specific fab-ric, so the client does not have to imagine what it will ultimately look like, but can rather see the finished product.

InvestmentA custom suit is an investment in itself. We make the personalised shopping experience worry free, comfortable, exclusive, and the client is part of the creation process.

“Rather own one suit of the highest quality than a lot of mediocre options.”

Another great advantage is that once you have had your measurements taken, we keep it on file, so extra shirts, jackets or trousers can be made up whenever the need arises.

ColoursThink blues and greys this summer in terms of col-ours - all variations and combinations of these two colours from electric blue, ultramarine blue, oxford blue, street blue, navy blue and midnight blue. With “50 shades of grey pallets” one can’t go wrong in terms of being colour trendy. Grey might be considered a dull and “boring” colour, in fact it all depends on the colour combination of the shirt.

Choose a brighter coloured shirt with a grey suit or jacket. Alternatively windowpane and stripey patterns are also an excellent combination - in fact patterned fabrics make more of a fashion statement.

StylesThe latest summer trends include small lapels, small pocket flaps and small cut breast pockets. Jackets with a “ticket pocket” give a more sporty look and is ideal to wear with jeans and a pair of sneakers. When focussing on the jacket’s back splits - two splits are the most popular as it is the most com-fortable, in terms of mobility.

Double buttoned suits are also currently in fashion and it appears more stylish to maintain the length of the jacket. In contrast, make sure the trouser is slightly shorter. The double breast button suits are also back in fashion and will look good on any guy with excellent posture.

For weddingsChoose colours ranging from classic black, popular shades of grey or variations of blue. For weddings there is no specific rule when it comes to colour, this is your big day therefore choose your favourite colour and wear it in an elegantly shaped suit

What every guy should invest in for his wardrobeOne navy blue and one grey suit are “must have” items in every guy’s wardrobe. I don’t recommend a brown suit unless it suits your skin tone. Black is out. It is no longer con-sidered a corporate colour and should be consid-ered only for specific occasions.

Unless you replace the black suit with a tuxedo; either the classic black tux or a midnight blue one for the more fashion orientated guy. Keep in mind that the tuxedo must be a one button jack-et with pastel pockets (pockets without flaps).A knock out trend this summer is to have one “to die for jacket” made with an extravagant material and combine it with jeans or chinos and a pair of hip sneakers. With this combination you will look the part for any occasion.

Amanda has always had long hair, pinned up in a bun, most of the time. While taking care of her family, running the household and building a career, she needed a style that was easy to manage, yet stylish without “making me look like an old lady”. Pixie hairstyles capture the essence of feminine beauty by framing the cheekbones, highlighting the eyes and elongating the neck. It’s a look that combines both effortlessness and chic – the perfect cut for her oval face shape and balanced neck, taking only minutes to dry and style.

A further asset is Amanda’s great skin. Four quick & easy make-up must-have products were identified:Foundation: Only apply where needed, i.e. around the nose and chin area to even out skin tone Mascara: Apply a few layers to open up the eyesBronzer: Draw the shape of the number 3 by starting from the outer edge of the eyebrow, curving under the cheekbone, tracing along the ear to once again curve along the jawline. By using a big puffy brush, it creates a lovely sun-kissed shadow and compliments her new hairstyle.Lips: Use a lip liner to outline the lip for a fuller look

and colour for a longer lasting finish. A lovely red brown shade complements Amanda’s Medium™ skin tone.

Smart jackets and blouses that rouche or drape across the tummy were chosen to conceal the little baby weight that was sure to drop once she got back to her work routine. Amanda’s feedback after the makeover experience: “I look and feel amazing, ready to take on the corporate world once again and be a proud mommy at the same time.”

Gracie Jiu Jitsu Cape Town is a Certified Gracie Academy in Cape Town. James Smart is the only Black Belt outside the USA awarded by the Gracie Family.

Simple, Effective, Self Defense - Gracie Jiu Jitsu

The Gracie Family now known across the world for changing the face of Martial Arts forever. Consid-ered one of the toughest families, spanning many generations, the Gracie Jiu Jitsu has now become synonymous with self defence and is recognized as the most effective fighting style, over any other

Martial Art. Over eighty years ago Helio Gracie saw his older brother training in a more traditional style of Ju Jutsu and realized as a weak and frail young man he would not be able to defend himself using speed, strength and co-ordination as required by most styles. Helio altered what his brother was doing in order for it to be simpler, use better body mechanics and more leverage. Very quickly his technique and style proved to be highly effective in fights and grew to a national sport in Brazil. With the huge success of Gracie Jiu Jitsu in Brazil, Helios’ oldest son Rorion (the “R” is pronounced as “H”) set off for the USA to prove to the rest of the world this amazing style of his family.

To show the devastating effectiveness of Gracie Jiu Jitsu, Rorion Gracie created a “No Holds Barred” tour-nament, now known world wide as the UFC. This tournament was to have only two rules: no eye gouging and no groin strikes and compete martial arts of all styles against each other to see which style would win.

SPORT

Page 47: Locum Lifestyle Magazine Edition 5

47LOCUM LIFESTYLE

Rorion’s younger brother, Royce represented the Family and wining the first three UFC’s, placed into the Martial Arts hall of fame.

Today Gracie Jiu Jitsu is used by the US Army; US Special Forces; Israeli Special Forces; many police depart-ments around the world and by thousands of civilians as a means to defend themselves. The UFC is the most viewed TV sport in the USA and the fastest growing sport in the world.

In this article, we are demonstrat-ing some simple techniques that you can use to defend against threats and other attacks. Please remember, no martial art or self de-fence technique should replace the act of removing yourself from the danger. Awareness, Avoidance and Unknown Contact Management Skills should be the foundation of your self defence program. If you are facing a firearm, being punched or grabbed by assailants you are already facing danger.

These techniques are carried out by trained practitioners of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. If you try these without supervision from a certified instruc-tor, you are risking injury. Gracie Jiu Jitsu Cape Town can not be held responsible for an injury that may be caused whilst practicing these techniques. Always train slowly and under full control. Gun Defences must not be practiced with a real gun, use a dummy for practice. The same can be said for knife defence practice.

Remember, if the assailant is not within 1 arms length, you are not going to get that weapon off him,

if there are more than one assailant you will likely get shot or stabbed by one of them. A general rule of defence is compliance, unless your assailants try and move you to a new location. Many self defence situa-tions require immediate action. For details on Seminars, Training at a Certified Training Centre or how to get started if you don’t live near an Academy, please email [email protected] or call 021 5567830

The first ten readers to book, will each reaceive 10 sessions of FREE training at the Cape Town Certified Training Centre. Please quote Locum Lifestyle magazine as a reference when booking the introduction class.

by Günther Komnick

Günther may have seen some of the worst that there is to experience. But he has placed his focus on the beauty. He says he thinks of his art as that – as others pick up a brush, he picks up his camera. And Günther is still as impelled by that drive today, as the first time he held one. Over the years he has moved from Brown Box cameras to the Hasselblad, to his choice today of the digital Nikon D800 – always on manual settings. “I don’t like the automatic settings. That tells you what the camera sees, but when I look, that’s not how I feel.”

In the past few years he has traveled extensively, which has now culminated in six self-published books of his travel photography.

“I may not have long left, but the drive is still in me. I want to put together as much as I can, while I can.”

He’s also done many oil paintings and illustrated a host of award-winning children’s books.

Immersed in his photos, I ask if there’s ever been a missed opportunity that he still thinks about. He laughs immediately. “Once in Egypt, at a petrol station, there was a man with a donkey, refuelling. Strapped to the donkey’s back were tanks that he was filling with petrol. I still laugh when I think of that. Just didn’t have my camera ready!”

Günther Komnick’s preferred language is photography. Here, in the shifting sea of images he has captured over his 86 years to date, lies his eloquence, his penchant for subtlety, for refined expression. Here, is found the vibrancy of life, the moods that mark a moment, the membrane of memory.

Born to a cultured family of artists in East Prussia, Günther’s life was radically upended when he, his mother and his younger sister were interned in a Russian labour camp. They spent three years exposed to unspeakable trauma.

“Every day, you did not know if you would survive. Terrible things happened, right in front of us. We lost everything. To come from somewhere, to have your education stolen, to have nothing... this makes you see differently,” he says.”It is also where my drive stems from.”

His drive, and also his deep appreciation and photographic articulation of people’s resilience, their courage, their joy – despite the difficulty of their circumstances.

This is something that Günther innately relates to. He and his family escaped the labour camp and became refugees. He eventually ended up in the Black Forest, where hard work, and a lot of it, led to his study of graphic design. After working in Switzerland for a few years, he settled in South Africa in 1956.

“When you travel, it deepens your understanding of people, of their cultures. What everybody has in common, is that it is all about survival. There, people fish. There, they weave baskets to sell. Survival drives all of these activities,” he says, while we page through his previous coffee table book, Impressions. From exotic red earth, snakes, tribal ceremonies, dancing, to the everyday pleasures – children playing, friends, talking, cooking... he has brought to light numerous nuances across many continents.

He recounts another incident on the Skeleton Coast, Namibia, lost to all but his memory – except now.

“There was a beached whale, it had died, and as we drove, we saw a whole army of giant crabs, walking upright out of the sea, towards the whale. I did shoot it, I was carrying my Hasselblad with a big magazine of 75 shots... and I shot them all, and the dunes and everything, but then I realised in the end that I was

still shooting, past 75 shots. The film had not wound on,” he says, shaking his head. “That was a once in a lifetime chance.”

Again, though, he gives a shrug and smiles. He’s surrounded by the shots he did get. He has a wife he adores, a lush garden of fern and cycad heaven. And there’s a world out there, with things only he will see, just waiting for him.
