Grounds & Greens Report

• This was a long cold winter. The fairways are

looking good and the rough is now growing.

The fairways weren’t mowed all winter.

• The cold weather and the long wet period we

had damaged the first three greens.

• The extended period of wet damp weather

adversely affected greens 1, 2, and 3. There

was no drainage and the overseed died off.

• This leads me into what we’re doing to alleviate

this problem. It has been proven that poor drainage

has a real negative affect on greens. We

contracted Innovative Drain Technologies to locate

the drains. They use a type of radar to locate the

lines. I’m sure you noticed several holes around

the greens. In some cases we repaired drain lines

and extended some to lower ground.

• We’ll be installing ports which will enable the drain

lines to be blown out.

• We’re installing new style sprinkler heads around

the greens to distribute the water more evenly.

• The heads we’re replacing will be used on the

fairways.

• We’re doing all we can to extend the life of our

greens. They are old and wearing out.

• The MGA donated $650 for the purchase of the

landscaping stones in front of the back white tee on #2.

• Sweat equity preformed the work.

• Jim Bowers got the first course laid out perfectly level.

Rich Modrowski, Bob Morris and Ernest Worley then

pitched in to finish the job.

• The wall really looks great.

• May 18 and 19 we be aerifying the greens.

• We had a real short term part time employee. We hired

him and fired him all in one week. He neglected to set

the brake on one of our work carts and left it run into

the pond on hole #15.

• It’ll cost us about $400 in parts plus Jim’s labor.

• I need to make a point pertaining to our Tree

Management Program.

• We do not arbitrarily take trees down with out

reason.

• Our job is to grow grass. Trees and southern grass

are not compatible. Some greens and tees were

shaded and we couldn’t grow grass on them. Also

as the course got older the small trees grew into

big trees and made the course very tight and not

player friendly. We cut back many limbs that were

hanging over playing areas and removed some of

the trees.

• Large trees drink around fifty gallons of water a

day. This takes a lot moisture from the grass.

• We place a lot of value our trees, they’re a very

important part of the golf course and community.

• We sprayed herbicide on the rough to kill off winter

weeds. We also just fertilized the tees and greens.

• Replaced sand in the traps at #13 green.

• We’re replacing sod around the edges of some of the

traps where foot traffic destroyed the turf.

• I feel we’ll have a course that’s going to be in great

shape this summer.
