Nominated as two of Pittsburgh’s “Best Doctors,” Matt El-Kadi, MD, PhD, FACS (left); and Joseph C. Maroon, MD, FACS (right), are board-certified in neurosurgery and provide expert spine care and surgery. They have access to UPMC Passavant and the wide range of resources of the UPMC health care network. The Tri-State Neurosurgical team performs more than 1,800 spine procedures per year. They work with pain management clinic and physical rehabilitation therapists to provide alternatives and tailor treatment plans.

Dr. El-Kadi is chief of Neurosurgery at UPMC Passavant and vice chairman and clinical professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at UPMC. He specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery, spinal and disc disease surgery, spine tumors, image-guided surgery, and complex spinal instrumentation and fusion surgery.

Dr. Maroon is vice chairman and clinical professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at UPMC. He has a special interest in minimally invasive spine surgery, pituitary tumor, and brain surgery; prevention and treatment of traumatic injuries to the central nervous system; and complementary approaches to inflammatory disease associated with aging. He is also the team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers and an advisor to the NFL on concussions.
