With deep regret I announce that Kathie Hile and Letitia Caruso have decided to leave the board. Kathie as Director in Charge of Ways and Means and Letitia as Membership Chairwomen. We wish them the best and hope that they will continue to serve our society as they see best. Thank you Ladies for your service. The Board is most grateful and welcomes Mary Ellen Walsh as our new Membership Chairwomen. I personally thank Mel for her will-ingness to take this on in our society's time of need. She will lend her considerable professional and personal experience to this posi-tion. Our fabulous web mistress Robyn Chosy is working overtime to bring our society's technical needs up to date. She has rolled out a new web sign-up application that fully integrates with our website. That means we no longer have to use a third party program for this service like VolunteerSpot and your infor-mation never leaves SCOS's control. It is now available for our September 10th BBQ & Auction. Check it out at: http://sonomaorchids.com/?page_id=3655 The July 10th potting was a lovely day for all that attended. By my observation it was a pleasant balance of much needed dividing, repotting and social interaction. Earl and Kathy Rathbun graciously hosted the event at their beautiful Santa Rosa home, for which we all thank them. Many thanks to Kathie Hile for leading the SCOS team at Petaluma' s Art & Garden Fair July 10th. Many new contacts for the society were made and provided our members with an opportunity to sell their artwork and or-chids. A final bingo thanks to both Susan Anderson for picking up plants from California Orchids in Bolinas and Dale Martin from Austin Creek Orchids for providing our winner's table. Cudo's to Ann Conger for calling our game and creating a lot of fun for us all. On another note, I think it is important that you have an opportunity to get to know your board members better. I intend in the coming months to highlight some of them for you. This month our web mistress and co-newsletter editor Robyn Chosy in her own words: "After graduating from trade school with a degree in Computer Science, I worked for EDS as a mainframe com-puter operator for several years. I then joined the insurance division of American Express and worked in their remote data center in San Rafael in the capacity of Data Center Manager. After 7 years, I resigned to be a stay-at-home mom to my 3 daughters and took up photography, graphic & web design as hobbies. This eventually turned into a full-time endeavor and my business, Burning Brains Productions was born which my partner and I ran successfully for many years. Currently, I am the E-Commerce & Marketing Manager for a small company in Sonoma and I continue to do contract graphic & web projects as time allows. My love affair with Orchids started like most everyone else... with a single Phal someone purchased for me from Safeway. While a greenhouse is hopefully in my future, I have been growing indoors taking up every available inch of window space. I am cur-rently focused on mini-cattleyas as they seem to die less often then other species under my growing conditions." Happy growing to you all. My Best, Angelique

P.S. My boys love Orchiata too!

BE INSPIRED. BE CREATIVE. Summer is in full swing! While hungry thoughts of idyllic vacation

getaways churn in our minds, our cherished orchids silently look on. Why does vacationing suddenly

sound like bad news? After booking flights for a 2 week getaway this July, I stood in my bathroom and

cursed myself thoroughly. Where was I going to find an orchid-sitter for 9 small plants? I immediately

went to the AOS website and typed “vacation” into the search engine. Results came back with a “plant

sitter” article and yes, drip irrigation can be used as maintenance watering for your cymbidiums.

Hmmm…could I possibly create a misting system for my mounts and seedlings in the bathtub?

SPHAGNUM MOSS. A LOVE-HATE THING. I know that I am not alone in this feeling. Potting

with moss is like trying to ride a wave on the Banzai pipeline, at least for me, and I can’t surf. Luckily,

for those who share my plight, we can all learn to carve (or pot) confidently after reading July’s article,

The Mysteries of Sphagnum Moss (p498), in Orchid’s Magazine. I promise that after reading it 3

times, YOU WILL become One-With-The-Moss. Learn about sphagnum’s cation-exchange capacity to

understand why you should be lighter handed with certain fertilizers. Improve your potting technique

with clever and simple tricks such as Alan Koch’s collaring technique (Gold Country Orchids) and ex-

pand your knowledge of general potting guidelines. Well-written, this is a must read! It will change

your orchid’s lives!

BECOME AN ORCHID SNOOPER Stay tuned for this exciting article in the August issue of Or-

chids Magazine. Is anyone within our society a local orchid hunter? We live in one of the most spectac-

ular areas of California. Let’s band together for hiking and orchid exploring in any of our gorgeous

state/county parks. Contact me, [email protected], if interested in leading an educational

expedition, blazing a trail or being part of an outdoor adventure. Perhaps we can gather a group by

spring/summer of 2017 if not earlier. Read this past June and July orchid hunting articles to whet your

appetite.

That same evening I called my boyfriend to help me run a 5/8” line from the outdoor water spigot (irrigation timer attached), through my bathroom window and taped onto both ends of my tub. I inserted 2 mister emitters over the left half of the tub and 1 emitter over the right half, thereby creating 2 watering environments – high and low. I then placed the orchids in their respective environments, turned the system on, tuned the emitters manually for flow and finalized orchid place-ment. After 5 days of experimenting and observing, I set the timer to run for 1 min/day at 8:30am, every day.

Page 11—SCOS Newsletter August 2016

August Cultural Checklist (By James Rose and Ned Nash, with permission of AOS)

August is usually the hottest month, so be prepared to work diligently to ensure sufficient air circu-

lation. Spray water on the floor, benches and outer surface of clay pots one or more times every day

during the hottest times. Continue watering and using a dilute fertilizer. The warm temperatures

also cause fungal and bacterial problems as well as an increase in insect populations. Observe your

plants carefully and spray for both insects and disease when first noticed.

Cattleyas: High heat seems to discourage active growth and flowering, but many plants are either

developing buds for their autumn flowering or are ripening growths that will power the winter and

spring blooming season. The bifoliates and nodosa hybrids seem best able to bloom during the sum-

mer temperature extremes. The high temperatures and the humidity created in our greenhouses

damping down to keep our plants cool creates the potential for black rot. Consider allowing plants

to dry more thoroughly between waterings. Tie up new growths carefully to promote upright devel-

opment of the pseudobulbs.

Cymbidiums: To initiate strong bloom spikes, use high phosphorous and potassium fertilizer in

late August. The nitrogen level should be zero to very low (0-10-10 or 5-15-15). The first number,

"0", is the nitrogen, the "10", or middle number is the phosphorous and the last number "10", is the

potassium. Look at your fertilizer label, as these important numbers are usually shown on the front

of the label. But also look at the back of the label to insure that there are other nutrients for your

orchids in a particular fertilizer, i.e. zinc, copper, nickel, etc. Just as our body needs vitamins, it also

needs minerals. Fertilize you cymbidiums as noted above two or three times at two week intervals.

Then, resume your normal fertilizer schedule (more balanced, such as 10-10-10).

Dendrobiums: The nobile-type dendrobiums are popular, although some growers find them diffi-

cult to flower. In order to promote the gradual shift from active growth to the flowering cycle, start

withholding nitrogen now. Some growers use a bloom booster this time of year on winter dormant

plants to help prepare them for their dormancy.

Phalaenopsis: Current high temperatures are particularly stressful for phalaenopsis. Excess heat

and humidity promote bacterial Pseudomonas infections on the fleshy leaves. Keep light levels sub-

dued, promote sufficient air circulation and do not splash water from one plant to another. Keep

using a dilute (1/4 to 1/8 tsp/gal) fertilizer with every watering to develop the strongest roots and

largest leaves prior to the winter flowering season.

Vandas: Summer growing conditions are ideal for Aerides, Ascocentrumi, Rhynchostylis and Van-

da hybrids. Feed aggressively and provide high humidity. Some growers show success with the fol-

lowing "home remedy": Try placing a rubber-topped plastic flower tube containing stale beer on a

rigid, emerging new root (in the evening and remove in the morning so the root doesn't burn). Ra-

ther quickly, the root will consume the beer and utilize its carbohydrate content, producing some

remarkable growth responses.
