You can use iCloud to locate a lost or stolen Mac, iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad. Depending on how you use your Mac, iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad, you can end up with many details of your life

residing on the device. That is generally a good thing, but if you happen to lose your device, you have also lost those details, plus you have created a large privacy problem because anyone can now see your data. You can locate your device and even send a message to the device using an iCloud feature called Find My iPhone, which also works for Macs, iPods, and iPads.

I tried to enable Find My Mac, but OS X would not allow it. How can I enable Find My Mac?You first need to enable location services. To do this, click System Preferences ( ) in the Dock. Click Security & Privacy, click the Lock icon ( ), type your OS X administrator password, and then click OK ( changes to ). Click Location Services and then click Enable Location Services ( changes to ).

Is there a way to ensure that someone who finds my lost device cannot view my files or change any settings?Yes, you can use iCloud’s Find My iPhone application to lock the device. Follow Steps 1 and 2 to locate the device on a map, and then click Remote Lock. In the Remote Lock dialog that appears, type a four-digit passcode, retype the passcode, type a message that will appear on the device, and then click Lock.

iCloud displays the Send Message dialog.

4 Type your message.
