Sep 22, 2010 Chairman Mary Nichols California Air Resources Board 1001 I Street Sacramento, CA 95812 Subject: Help Local Governments Improve Air Quality and Public Health Dear Chairman Nichols, I encourage the California Air Resources Board to pursue vigorous implementation of SB 375 (Steinberg). This law will help California lead the way in the implementation of "smart growth" economic development policies that promote healthier communities and reduce harmful air pollutants and greenhouse gases. SB 375 does this by encouraging improved land use and transportation planning and alternatives to driving, including: *neighborhood reinvestment and redevelopment *more robust and effective transit programs *more walkable, compact communities connected by transit *community design and infrastructure that supports walking and biking We know these programs will lead to a smart economic development policy at the same time that they generate excellent health benefits and address global warming with more jobs, cleaner air, and less time in traffic. These should be priority goals in California. Sincerely, Dr. Richard Schneider Mayor, City of South Pasadena
Sep 22, 2010 Chairman Mary Nichols California Air Resources Board 1001 I Street Sacramento, CA 95812 Subject: Please pursue vigorous implementation of SB 375 Dear Chairman Nichols, I encourage the California Air Resources Board to pursue vigorous implementation of SB 375 (Steinberg). This legislation will help California lead the way in implementation of "smart growth" policies that can improve local economies, reduce our infrastructure costs and create jobs while also reducing air pollution and greenhouse gases. I support MTC's recent actions to recommend a regional greenhouse gas reduction target. I am writing to ask CARB to show leadership in helping SB 375 reach its full potential in two ways: Residents in our community want us to address climate change, but they also want us to make our communities healthier, to protect our air and water quality, and to provide greater economic opportunity for everyone. We need the tools to make sure our region's Sustainable Communities Strategy achieves these broader goals. Please establish a process to monitor the implementation of SB 375 and measure all of the benefits of smarter growth. The City of San Leandro is committed to doing good planning, but in this current economic downturn, our budget is very tight. Please exercise your full powers to identify and support financial resources that cities and towns can use for planning and other activities that meet the goals of SB 375. San Leandro stands ready to partner with neighboring cities and towns to achieve this full range of goals, to reduce traffic and chronic illness, and to make our communities healthier and economically stronger. Sincerely, Mr. Michael Gregory Councilmember, City of San Leandro
